Vladimir Galant: A Hi-Tech Career

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

CASTRO VALLEY — After more than two decades working with computer technology, Vladimir Galant is still going strong. “I started out by running an internet service provider in my home country of Lithuania,” he remembers. “It was a completely different scene in that time and place—a lot of people didn’t even know what the internet was, so it took quite a bit of courage and effort to build a company there.” In 2000, Vladimir moved to the United States to take a management position at an internet service provider in California. However, when the dot-com bubble burst just a year later, he found himself at a crossroads. “Ultimately, I decided to start working as a solo consultant. Over the last 15 years, my business has continued to grow and I now have four full-time experts working for me.”

Today, as president of 911 PC Help, Vladimir says his favorite part of his job is bringing relief to frustrated customers. “One thing I really enjoy is getting customers who have tried to get their problems resolved elsewhere and are desperate for a solution. When I’m able to fix the problem, I can see the appreciation in their eyes, which is very rewarding.”

A resident of Castro Valley, Vladimir spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “I love nature and physical exercise, so one of my favorite activities is hiking,” he details. “My favorite place to hike is Lake Chabot. I also enjoy doing yoga, going to the movies and spending time with my close friends.”

While he spends his days working with computers, Vladimir says the most important aspect of his job is working with people. “It doesn’t matter whether you work with computers or plumbing or anything else—at the end of the day, you have to serve your customers. People expect to be served well no matter what the job entails, which is why I emphasize customer service as much as quality work. Because of this, I have very high customer loyalty. In fact, the majority of clients I’ve served over the years are still with me today.”

Know What You Want
Know Your System Needs Before Hiring a Computer Service and Repair Shop

Computer service and repair is a far-reaching area and can focus on enterprise infrastructure issues, smartphone processes or the defragmentation of a single laptop, as well as many other computer issues. While you don’t need to be able to tweak any of your system utilities, you should be able to assess your computer needs. Ask yourself these questions before you continue with your search for a San Francisco computer service and repair company.

  1. Does hiring a Diamond Certified company give me peace of mind, particularly since these companies offer the best quality and are backed by the Diamond Certified Performance Guarantee?
  2. What is my overall objective?
  3. Do I just need a quick repair or do I need extensive work on my system?
  4. Will the work I request cost more than the purchase of a new system?
  5. What is my budget?
  6. Can I afford computer service and repair?

What To Ask In Person
Visit the Computer Service and Repair Shop and Ask Detailed Questions

To avoid hiring a computer service and repair firm in Sunset District, Mission District or the Greater San Francisco Bay Area that can’t attend to your needs, you’ll want to ask certain questions. These questions should help determine if the computer service and repair company has the experience or expertise to perform the services you require. If you choose well, the San Francisco computer service and repair company that you hire will be your source for quick fixes and answers to questions about new technologies. So, ask questions that determine experience, expertise and the company’s strategy for remaining knowledgeable.

  1. How experienced is the technician who will fix my system?
  2. Is the technician familiar with my brand and software applications?
  3. Do you outsource your repair services? Are your technicians your own employees or are they consultants? How can you help me optimize my system?
  4. Why do you recommend or not recommend UPS products?
  5. Do you offer your services remotely, offsite or a combination?
  6. How long will it take to fix my computer issue?
  7. When can I pick up my fixed computer?
  8. Do you provide estimates or quotes for your services?
  9. What automated systems do you use?
  10. What guarantees does your company offer?

  • What To Ask References
    Questions for References

Diamond Certified computer service and repair companies in Sunset District, Mission District and the San Francisco Bay Area are your best option because these companies have passed a comprehensive ratings system that many other companies can’t pass. Choose a Diamond Certified company in San Francisco or the Greater Bay Area if you need a computer service and repair company that provides expert, certified technicians. You can visit the Diamond Certified website to review all certified companies. Therefore, you can feel confident when selecting a Diamond Certified company. You don’t need to worry about fake reviews because all analysis is performed in live telephone interviews of existing customers.

You will have to research on your own if you can’t find a Diamond Certified computer service and repair company within the San Francisco area. When you complete your own research, call references provided by computer service and repair companies. The references that Tenderloin, Bernal Heights and other San Francisco computer service and repair companies will offer can’t provide you with the same value as the large, indiscriminate sample of customers surveyed during the Diamond Certified ratings process. References given to customers from companies are not randomly selected from all their customers, and the repair companies will likely select customers that they know are satisfied when you request referrals.

To circumvent cherry-picking of referrals, ask for a list of the company’s 10 most recent customers. Ask questions that will help you assess if you can build a rapport with the computer service and repair company. You want to ensure that the company you select bills only for the services it performs and provides a working environment that’s conducive for asking questions and getting quick results.

    1. Was the Tenderloin, Bernal Heights or Excelsior computer service and repair company experienced? While working on your system, did the technician service other clients? Did they repair your computer in their promised time frame? Did you find the cost of their services reasonable?
    2. Did they explain the fixes to your computer and ways to prevent further issues? Were there delays, and if so, did they inform you?
    3. Did the Tenderloin, Bernal Heights or Excelsior computer service and repair company provide detailed and clear invoices?
    4. Did the computer service company provide written documentation that detailed all aspects of your repaired computer setup, including passwords, licenses, and equipment specifications and serial numbers?
    5. Did they proactively help you improve your system’s performance?
    6. Did they have backup procedures in place for system crashes?
    7. How did the Pacific Heights, Nob Hill or Excelsior computer service and repair consultant monitor and back up your system? Was this done off- or onsite?
    8. What security options did they provide for your computer?
    9. How quickly did they respond when you called?
    10. How much time did they need to repair your computer?

  • How To Work With
Before You Hire/How to Attract the Best Computer Service and Repair Companies

Make sure you verify the credentials of the Pacific Heights or San Francisco computer service and repair consultant that you select. Anyone with a hobby for tinkering around with computers can call himself a computer technician or computer geek. This means your neighbor with remarkably little computer experience can set up a computer service and repair shop in his Nob Hill garage. Remember that the computer service and repair market is unregulated. Verify information you receive from referrals and check the certifications that the technicians claim to have earned. Better yet, save yourself the trouble and hire a Diamond Certified San Francisco computer service and repair shop.

Keep in mind that every glitch or hiccup on your PC isn’t an indication that your computer is on its last leg. For example, a PC that won’t start isn’t necessarily an indication of a fried motherboard. An experienced and knowledgeable North Beach, Bayview District or Pacific Heights computer repair technician may be able to adjust other areas of your computer system to make it boot.

Motherboards may cost several hundred dollars, so make sure the computer repair consultants are truly knowledgeable before you allow them to tinker with your computer or talk you into purchasing additional computer components. Many computer repair technicians set up shop in their homes and are quite knowledgeable, but there are others who will simply reimage your computer and charge you an exorbitant fee for their troubles. If reimaging your computer is an ideal fix, you can probably take care of this task yourself.

Now That You’ve Found the Ideal Computer Service and Repair Shop in San Francisco
Head over to their shop in the San Francisco Bay Area or have the computer service and repair technician come to your office in Bayview District or wherever you’re located in the San Francisco Bay Area. However, before the technician begins work on your computer or laptop, get the scope of work and a price quote in writing. Your computer technician should discuss the possible issues and suggested fixes for your computer. All discussions should be in terms that you understand. If there is something you don’t understand, stop and ask questions before the computer service company begins working.

Be extremely detailed when you hand off your computer to the repair shop. Tell them of all recent applications that you attempted to download, even if the download didn’t seem to take. Also, be sure you tell them about any recent internet crashes or power outages. This may give the repair person ideas as to what is causing the issues with your computer.

When you drop off your PC at most North Beach shops, the computer service and repair technician will usually give you a claim ticket. Hang on to this ticket, as it’s the instrument you will use to reclaim your computer. Some computer service and repair shops use the ticket number as a tracking mechanism. Thus, your ticket helps them respond quickly when you request updates.

Ways to Make Their Job Easier
Follow up on the status of your computer. If the Rincon Hill computer service and repair consultant provides courtesy calls to let you know that your computer system is ready, pick up your computer promptly. If you select a reputable San Francisco computer service and repair shop, they will likely take every precaution to secure your equipment; however, prompt pickup ensures your equipment won’t become a lost item. The time to negotiate cost occurs before you drop off your computer, not at the time of pickup. This idea reiterates that you should ensure you receive a written quote for the work that the Tenderloin computer service and repair shop performs. From the written quote, you’ll know what to expect and can budget for payment when your computer is up and running again.

  • Be a Good Customer
How Can You Be a Good Computer Service and Repair Customer?

It’s the San Francisco computer service and repair consultant’s responsibility to perform quality computer repairs and services using the best possible installation techniques. But you play a big part in the success of your computer service and repairs, too. Here are a few simple steps you can take to be a good customer when hiring a San Francisco computer service and repair company.

    • Be clear and upfront with the computer service and repair consultant. Let them know what you want from your computer service and repairs, the long-term outcome you’re expecting, and specific ways they can satisfy your expectations.
    • Before you hire a computer service and repair company in San Francisco, restate your expectations and goals and reiterate your understanding of the agreement. Most problems with North Beach and other local computer service and repair shops occur because of a breakdown in communication. By being clear about your expectations and theirs, you can avoid most conflicts.
    • Ask your computer service and repair consultant if you should call to check on the progress or if they will call you with updates.
    • Make sure your service representative has a phone number where they can reach you at all times while they’re fixing your computer system. The work will move along more smoothly if your computer service and repair technician can reach you for any necessary updates, questions or work authorizations.
    • When your technician contacts you, return their calls promptly to keep the computer service and repairs on schedule.
    • Pay for the computer service and repairs promptly.

Computer service and repair shops in San Francisco appreciate customers who are straightforward, honest, and easy to work with. Your good customer behavior sets the tone and creates an environment conducive to a good relationship. Things may very well go smoother and any problems may be more easily resolved.

Check The Work
Check work against invoice

Check your computer system thoroughly in the presence of the computer service and repair consultant.  Make sure they performed all the work that’s itemized on your invoice. Ask to see reports for utility services that they performed. If the Hayes Valley computer service and repair shop installed applications, open and try the applications before you leave the shop. Try to access the applications that seemed to give you trouble before you dropped off your system. You also should try to run several applications simultaneously.

Written Warranties
Ask for Written Warranties for Computer Service and Repair Work

Not every San Francisco computer service and repair shop offers warranties. While lack of warranties isn’t a surefire test of experience and skill, it may be cause for concern. Warranties protect you in the event of a repair attempt goes awry. San Francisco computer repair technicians are likely to be more thorough if they offer warranties. They want to work on your computer once because if they must revisit a repair, they limit their opportunities to work on other projects.

Be sure to get warranties in writing. Expect to pay for your fix as though it was a new issue if you don’t have written warranties. Read warranties carefully, and pay attention to warranty periods and limits. San Francisco computer service and repair warranty periods may extend up to 30 days, but some computer service and repair shops may warranty their work for only a few days after they fix your system. Some warranties are very detailed and will list the events that void the warranties. For example, some warranties are void if you visit certain websites, usually because the websites are virus-ridden. Others may void warranties if you access the internet before you enable your virus protection.

Your best bet for successful warranty coverage is to return your computer system to the repair shop within a few days after they complete work on your system. Therefore, during the warranty period, check your computer thoroughly. Resist the urge to fix issues that you find. Instead, take detailed notes of your experiences, noting the applications you were running and the events that transpired. Note any notifications that your receive—a print screen of notifications can be very helpful.

Some Sunset District computer service and repair shops void warranties if they believe you caused the additional problems you’re experiencing with your computer. Although the service technician typically makes the final decision when voiding warranties, you have every right to demand an explanation for the void. The technician must help you understand why the issue is new and not covered under the warranties.

Top 10 Requests
Top Service Requests

Computer service and repair requests run a gamut of issues. You can call a Bayview District, Nob Hill, North Beach or San Francisco repair shop for any computer-related issue, from setting up your new PC to making sure your wireless network recognizes all peripherals on your network. Repair shops offer remote access services, but you can also drop off your computer or the technician can come to your location anywhere in the Bay Area. You can also call some computer repair shops to help you with other electronic devices such as home theater systems and flat screen TVs. Below are the top 10 requests that computer service and repair shops receive:

Application Installations
The extent of software application installations depends on whether the computer service and repair company is completing an installation for an extensive network or a single computer. Installations for extensive networks (such as those for enterprises) include infrastructure design and implementation. The process often includes integration with the current environment, as well as migration from legacy systems. For a single computer, the computer service and repair company installs only the necessary components and takes precautions that ensure there are no conflicts with other applications already loaded on the computer.

Data Backup and Storage
You may lose your data and bring your personal activities or businesses to a screeching halt when your computer systems crash. Data backup and storage services include setting strategies to copy your data and store the copied data in a safe place, which is helpful if disaster recovery services are required. Backups are typically processed remotely during your downtime.

Disaster Recovery
To protect your data, you must have a data recovery plan in place. Computer service and repair consultants can help in this endeavor. They will help you create policies and processes using technologies that ensure your business remains viable if a disaster occurs. Policies and procedures set by a solid disaster recovery plan bring your business back to a seamless level of operation after a disaster. Disaster recovery strategies allow you to continue serving your customers and minimize the financial impacts of disasters.

Driver Installation/Update
There are system-specific drivers, application drivers and peripheral drivers; in fact, everything that interacts with your computer system has drivers. The average user relies on automated installation provided with each object that communicates with their system. It’s often difficult to select the best course of action to resolve the conflict when drivers don’t communicate well with each other and your system. Computer service and repair shops provide driver installation and update services to help your system continue to perform at optimal levels.

Electronics Repair
In the 21st century, electronic systems such as your home security systems and home media systems integrate with your computer systems. Therefore, it’s no surprise that computer service and repair shops often couple electronics repair services with computer repair services. Issues with your electronics can cause your computer system to crash. Your computer service and repair technician will make sure all systems are in optimal shape and performing as expected.

Email Setup
Email setup is often geared to business users or individuals who own extensive computer networks; however, the service is available for anyone who needs it. Email setup typically involves connecting existing or new email accounts and troubleshooting issues you may encounter with your email account. For business users, the service may involve setting up user accounts for employees and setting up security strategies.

Laptop/PC Tune-Up
If you’ve noticed that your computer or laptop is sluggish, the keys don’t depress all the way, or applications don’t launch as quickly as they once did, it may be time for a laptop or PC tune-up. The computer service and repair shop will remove unwanted programs, test the integration of applications and hardware on your system, and analyze your system to determine performance issues. They’ll also clean dust buildup from the fans and internal computer components.

Malware Removal
Malware can include viruses, Trojans, worms, adware and spyware that can harm your computer system. You’re not alone if you installed the virus protection program you received with your new PC. However, at the end of your trial period, you might wonder if the software is worth the money you must pay to maintain an ideal level of malware protection. Computer service and repair consultants can help you select the most effective malware protection for your system, and if you’ve been infected, they can remove the malware.

Network Configuration
Bayview District computer service and repair consultants, and those throughout San Francisco, can help you configure your network for your current needs and prepare you for future growth. Network configuration includes management of your private IP addresses and network address translations, which helps direct traffic to specific servers.

Peripheral Repairs
If you’re like most Pacific Heights and San Francisco area computer users, you have an unending number of attachments connected to your computer. If these aren’t working as expected, your computer also won’t perform as expected. This is the reason San Francisco computer repair shops offer peripheral repairs as an extension of their services.
