Comparative Summary

Serving the Bay Area and beyond since 1986, Wildcat Metals makes and installs standard and custom residential metal gutters and downspouts, siding, roofing, and decorative architectural pieces. For commercial properties, services include roofing, wall panels, soffits, sight screens, architectural work, gutters and downspouts, flashing, and maintenance. Its trained staff of 100 services, fabricates and installs all types of projects.

“We have 18 different fabrication machines and a large inventory featuring standard and custom color options and profiles,” says co-owner Katy Laubach. “Our robust stock and shop allows us to handle everything from emergencies to crafting specialized architectural details and roofing.”

Only a few Bay Area gutter and roofing companies have the facilities and experience to execute custom metal work without using additional suppliers and contractors, says Ms. Laubach. Wildcat Metals has two machines that can be used to fabricate roofing panels onsite. Using a crane, the pieces can be worked on and placed straight onto a roof.

“We can handle the specialty materials most customers want, not just aluminum and steel, but also painted aluminum and painted steel, zinc, copper, and COR-TEN®,” notes Ms. Laubach. Wildcat Metals installs gutters and downspouts for residences of all types, from the average house to high-end residential and commercial properties. “If you can draw it, we can make it.”

The company’s San Jose showroom helps clients who want to view their metal materials and products and view options they may not have previously considered.

Industry Info

When looking for custom metal work, learn about material options and specialists. New metal roofs, gutters, downspouts, and other metal architectural work are major investments that can add value to a property. New products and materials have been created that are worth investigating before you buy a simple replacement.

Advantages of metal roofing
To determine the cost and value of metal roofing, compare the cost of materials and installation of metal versus other roofing materials such as shingles. Add in replacement and maintenance costs to estimate lifetime costs. Several reports indicate that homes sold with standing seam metal roofs recover an average 85 percent of investment costs.

Some estimates find that it takes three full-grown trees to make one wood shingle roof or siding. Most metal roofing materials, such as steel and aluminum, are completely recyclable and often contain recycled components. Blended and coated products have added to the many available options.

Metal roofing provides energy savings by deflecting heat from homes and commercial buildings and reducing air-cooling needs. Some specialized finishes and coatings can further re-emit solar radiation.

Gutters and downspouts
Aluminum is the most popular and affordable choice. It won’t rust and can last 20 years or more with proper care. Copper has become a leading choice for upscale properties, but it has much higher installation and maintenance costs. Galvanized steel and vinyl options are other affordable choices. Specialized treated aluminum and copper options provide unique looks and colors as well as varying degrees of durability.

When it comes to specialized products and installation options for home improvement metal work, homeowners should talk to more than one professional before making a decision. “Ask companies about recent jobs they’ve done and if you can go look at them,” says Katy Laubach, co-owner of Wildcat Metals in San Jose. “If you need specialty work done, it can really pay to look at a contractor’s showroom and get a feel for their expertise.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What’s the turnaround time for a project?

A: It depends on the type of project. Appointments can usually be set up in one business day. A regular gutter job on a house can typically be completed within a day or two.

Q: What kinds of gutters can I choose from?

A: Aluminum and steel are the most popular, and we have many standard and custom styles to choose from on our website.

Q: Is aluminum or steel better for gutters?

A: Both are good products. Steel is a harder material and is more durable, while aluminum is softer and won’t rust. Both materials have the same paint system, which has a warranty for approximately 20 percent fade over 20 years.

Q: What colors are available?

A: We have more than 20 standard colors available, and you can always request a custom color. We have all the materials to match most existing residential gutter systems.

Q: What’s the general life span of gutter?

A: A painted gutter has a 20-year warranty on fade. Many last for 40 years, but that’s not guaranteed. Unpainted gutters (bonderized or galvanized) can be expected to last 15 to 25 years. Copper and stainless steel systems should last a lifetime.

Q: How often do I need to maintain my gutters?

A: Gutters should be checked yearly, and under certain trees, you should get leaf protection to save money on regular gutter cleaning or other problems.

Q: Do you do repairs and maintenance?

A: Yes. We have a variety of maintenance plans available.

During the winter, the weather was pretty intense and we had a gutter go down. They were able to fabricate something that would match what we currently had. It matches perfectly.

They were very positive about being able to make a correct match. I was worried I may have to get a whole new one.

They did a roof for me 10 years ago and they came out and repaired an area of the roof that they didn't have anything to do with in the first place and it was a weird area adjacent to a flat roof and they fixed all of that at no charge. They did a really nice job and they were very helpful.

I would say the best part is that they are very knowledgeable.
