Company Philosophy

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for heating and air conditioning contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For West Coast Mechanical, keeping customers happy comes down to one crucial detail: being responsive to their needs. “We respond quickly and get things done in a timely manner and at a fair price, and that mentality has allowed us to get to where we are today,” says owner Patrick Martinez. “For example, we try to respond to emails and calls within the same day, and we’re often able to fix problems right away. Customer service is everything to us.”

West Coast Mechanical has been providing HVAC services for commercial and residential clients in Monterey, San Benito, Santa Clara and Alameda Counties since 2016. The company is qualified to work on everything from central heating and cooling systems to specialized products like radiant heating and ductless split systems, and it offers 24/7 emergency service for the convenience of its customers.

Unlike less experienced HVAC contractors that try to upsell their customers or talk them into services they don’t need, West Coast Mechanical takes each client’s budget seriously and designs its work accordingly so they get the best possible value. “One of our core principles is to treat our customers’ money like it’s our own,” says Mr. Martinez. “We never cut corners—we determine what needs to be done and figure out the most efficient way to accomplish it.”

Another distinguishing feature of West Coast Mechanical is its focus on commercial contracts, which Mr. Martinez says is fairly unusual in the HVAC industry. “Whenever we pick up a new commercial maintenance contract, we put together a detailed equipment list and map out the room and system. That way, the client has all of the necessary documentation and can be in charge of their own equipment. The information we provide helps them better understand their HVAC systems and exercise more control over their options.”

Industry Info

Do your homework so you can understand how to make HVAC system efficiency work for you.

“Efficiency” is a buzzword in the HVAC industry, but just because a system is marketed as “high efficiency” doesn’t mean it’s the best choice for your situation. In fact, you may be able to save money on your initial purchase and throughout the life of your HVAC system by choosing a product with an efficiency rating that works best for you rather than simply buying the most efficient system on the market.

Understanding SEER and HSPF

SEER stands for “Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio,” which is simply the number on an air conditioning unit that tells you how efficient it is. HSPF identifies the “Heating Seasonal Performance Factor,” which tells you about the efficiency of a furnace’s heat pump. Energy Star systems must have a SEER of at least 14.5 and an HSPF of at least 8.2—the higher the number, the more efficient the unit.

It’s important to understand that while efficiency is important, climate plays a big factor in your heating and cooling needs. “High-efficiency units aren’t always worth the extra cost, especially in the Bay Area’s mild climate,” says Patrick Martinez, owner of West Coast Mechanical in Livermore. “Furnaces aren’t ‘one size fits all’ products, so it’s important to determine if the added expense is worth it for your needs.”

Choosing the size of your HVAC system

Choosing the most efficient HVAC system can actually waste energy and money if the system is too big or too small for your home or business. That’s because oversized systems cost more at the outset and throughout their lives if they’re pumping out more hot or cold air than your building needs. Likewise, an undersized system will have to work extremely hard, which strains its capabilities and uses additional energy.

Finding the system that’s right for you

Your HVAC contractor should discuss your preferences and demands so you can learn about the best options that are available to you. They should also consider your unique home, the climate in which your home is located, your current HVAC system setup, the type of power you plan to use to run your system (natural gas, electricity, etc.) and other variables. Quality contractors will also factor in lifetime operating costs, filters, ongoing maintenance and other details that can help you make an informed decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I trust your employees?

A: Absolutely. All of our employees are union-trained technicians. They treat every customer and their property with respect.

Q: Will I need a permit for my job?

A: It depends on a few factors, but we’ll let you know if your project requires a permit before work begins. As a licensed contractor, we’re obligated to fill permits for installations. All permitted work needs to be inspected by the city and county to make sure everything is up to code.

Q: Can you help me decide which type of furnace is best for my business or home?

A: Yes. We can give you options for replacing your furnace with a product that’s more or equally efficient. We can provide you with an assessment and all the information you need to make the right decision.

Q: Is the highest-efficiency furnace always the best option?

A: No, especially in the mild climate of the Bay Area. Some people want the most efficient equipment, but others want to figure out whether the added expense is worth it. We can help you determine which option is best for you.
