As the HVAC industry continues to evolve, it’s time to say goodbye to outdated technology.

The HVAC industry is no stranger to change, especially over the last couple of decades. Innovations in the way of energy efficiency and eco-friendliness have resulted in unprecedented levels of performance for modern systems and products. Not surprisingly, with the influx of newer technologies comes the departure of older ones, which can complicate matters for some homeowners. That’s why it’s helpful to be aware of upcoming changes in the HVAC field and prepare for any necessary adjustments.

According to Armen Grigorian, co-owner of Techpro Builders in San Carlos, one big change that’s currently taking place is the transition from single-stage furnaces to two-stage furnaces. “A single-stage furnace turns on, reaches the set temperature and turns off, whereas a two-stage furnace reaches the desired temperature and then switches to a lower setting to maintain the temperature,” he explains. “Since single-stage furnaces can only turn on and off, they can’t maintain a consistent temperature—they have to keep cycling on and off again. This results in a lot of wasted energy, as well as reduced comfort for the homeowner. By maintaining more consistent temperatures, two-stage furnaces save energy and make homes more comfortable.”

Another facet of HVAC technology that’s going by the wayside is R22 refrigerant for air conditioning systems. “R22 used to be the standard air conditioning refrigerant, but due to environmental concerns, it was phased out by the EPA,” says Mr. Grigorian. “While it’s still available to homeowners whose systems use R22, it has become so expensive that it’s often more cost-effective to replace the equipment than to have it serviced. Plus, the newer refrigerant, R-410A, isn’t compatible with most older systems, so homeowners’ options are really limited.”

To make things worse for owners of older air conditioning systems, as of January 1, 2020, R22 will be illegal to use in any way. So, if your air conditioner requires R22, you should plan to replace it as soon as possible. When you do, make sure you buy the most energy-efficient system available to avoid a similar predicament in the future.

Q: Do I need to replace my ductwork?
A: It depends on the type of damage. We’ll perform an inspection to see if there’s any asbestos, uneven airflow distribution or high levels of leakage. In some cases, the ductwork can be repaired, but if the damage is extensive, we may recommend replacement.

Q: Do I need to upgrade my electrical panel if I install a new air conditioner?
A: We’ll inspect your electrical panel to determine if there’s enough space and adequate power load to add a breaker for an air conditioning system.

Q: Should I get a humidifier?
A: It depends on the conditions inside your home. The ideal indoor air humidity level for a home is between 30 and 40 percent, but during winter, humidity levels can drop to as low as 10 percent. By adding moisture to the air that circulates throughout your home, a humidifier will reduce dryness and alleviate commonly associated issues.

Q: How do I know which type of furnace is right for my home?
A: Several factors come into play when determining the correct type of furnace to install in a home, including square footage, the efficiency of the incoming furnace, local climate conditions and the quality of the insulation. We’ll consider all of these factors and perform standard industry testing to determine which type of furnace would best suit your home.

Q: What’s the difference between a conventional furnace and a high-efficiency furnace?
A: A conventional furnace converts 80 percent of gas energy into heat, whereas a high-efficiency furnace converts 95 percent or more.
