Regular vacuuming can extend the life of your carpet and reduce cleaning costs.

The carpet in a typical household should be professionally cleaned every 12 to 18 months, depending on the number of residents, color of the carpet (light or dark), and amount and type of activity. However, if you allow your carpet to become overly soiled in between cleanings, it may become irreversibly damaged and necessitate expensive repairs. To extend your carpet’s life and preserve its aesthetic value, it’s important to keep a regular vacuuming schedule. Consider the following tips for maximizing the effectiveness of your vacuuming:

• Use a high-quality, upright vacuum cleaner with a reel-type brush to move the tips of the carpet pile so the dirt can be removed with the air velocity created by the vacuum.
• To determine how often you should vacuum, consider the amount of foot traffic and the relation of the carpet to dirty access areas. Don’t allow dirt to settle in the carpet—walking on dirt or grit that’s settled into the base of the carpet fibers causes an abrasive action, which results in the appearance of traffic lanes and worn areas.
• Vacuum traffic lanes every day. Use a back-and-forth motion in one direction, and then finish the carpet by slowly going back and forth in the opposite direction.
• Filled vacuum bags result in less suction and dirt removal, so empty them often. Be sure to check the belt that drives the brush or beater bar—a broken or worn belt reduces efficiency. Don’t be concerned by the amount of fiber you pick up from new carpet. These are ends that aren’t removed in the manufacturing process and often appear for many months.
• Never use a broom of any kind on the carpet; it’ll just move dirt around and create dust problems.
• Place removable mats at each entrance to your home (inside and outside) to prevent soil from being tracked throughout the inside. These mats can be laundered, hosed, beaten or vacuumed as soil accumulates to a noticeable degree.
• Dust can build up in corners and other hard-to-reach places. To remove it, run a vacuum attachment along the baseboard while you’re cleaning the edge of the carpet.
• If your vacuum isn’t working properly or if the brush roll stops turning, you may have to change the belt. Refer to your model’s user guide for installation instructions. With bagless vacuums, clean filters are critical to maintaining cleaning performance. Over time, filters can become dirty and clog, so it’s important to regularly clean and monitor them.

A: “We’re well-versed in all types of carpet cleaning systems, and ours is the only one that’s qualified to maintain the manufacturers’ warranties. If you have older carpets that are out of warranty, our methods will thoroughly extract the dirt and soil without damaging the fibers. Some cleaning methods will compromise the life of your carpets, but ours won’t.”

A: “Yes. No one is more exposed to our cleaning materials than us. We wouldn’t use them unless they were completely safe.”
 
Q: How long will it take to clean my carpet?
A: “A typical house with 2,000 square feet of carpet will take, on average, about two hours to clean. Drying time can vary depending on the density of the carpet and weather conditions.”
 
Q: What’s the most common carpet cleaning service you provide?
A: “Steam cleaning is the most common; it’s very effective on lightly soiled (not visibly dirty) carpet that simply needs a maintenance cleaning. Utilizing our truck-mounted cleaning equipment, we start by completely pre-treating the area to be cleaned, which breaks down the dirt for extraction. As we’re cleaning, we’ll move most furnishings, clean underneath, put them back, and protect them with foam blocks or plastic pads. Instead of running detergent through the cleaning machine, we utilize a textile rinse (Fiber-Rinse™) that deactivates the detergent for complete removal, so absolutely no residue is left behind.”
 
Q: Will my carpet get dirtier faster after a cleaning?
A: “Not if the cleaning has been performed correctly. If you’ve experienced this, then you haven’t been using the right cleaning service. A proper cleaning that uses the right materials and doesn’t leave residue behind will resist soiling for longer periods of time.”
 
Q: Why does my new carpet have an odor?
A: “The odor from new carpet is much like the odor found in a new car or leather, and it should disappear shortly. If the odor is objectionable, fresh air ventilation is the best method to eliminate it. Open windows and doors and operate your fan system during the removal of the old carpet and installation of the new carpet, as well as during any construction project. If you’re unusually allergic or hypersensitive to the odor, avoid the area immediately following installation.”

Scott Sunkel: A Fresh Start

WALNUT CREEK — For Scott Sunkel, getting into the carpet cleaning business may have been an unanticipated move, but it provided him with the fresh start he’d been looking for. “I managed a furniture store for three years, during which time I basically worked seven days a week and had no life,” he recounts. “In the course of looking for a different career, I started cleaning carpets. Even though I fell into it by happenstance, it wasn’t long before I realized that I really enjoyed it.”

Today, as owner of Start Fresh Restoration, Scott says he’s found a sense of balance and fulfillment that had been missing from his prior career. “Running my own business has created a really good balance in my life, and I get a lot of satisfaction from making people happy with the results of my work. When my customers smile, it makes me smile, so everybody’s happy.”

A lifetime resident of Walnut Creek (where he lives with his wife, Tammy), Scott appreciates the close-knit character of his community. “In addition to growing up here myself, this is where my kids grew up, and it was a very positive experience for all of us,” he says. “I feel fortunate to be part of such a conscientious, family-oriented community.”

Outside of work, Scott engages in a variety of active pastimes. “My wife and I do CrossFit, and I’ve recently taken up archery,” he says. “We also like to visit local wilderness areas and go exploring.” Additionally, Scott makes an effort to keep up with his two grown children, Cody and Shauna. “My son is in Denver and my daughter is in Argentina, so we don’t see a whole lot of each other, but we stay close by talking on the phone regularly and visiting at least a couple times a year.”

In regard to his professional career, Scott espouses the virtues of complete transparency. “I make it a point to be open and honest about the way I do business,” he explains. “There’s a lot of deceit in the marketplace, so my customers appreciate the fact that I’m an open book, which has resulted in a lot of repeat business and long-term relationships.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Scott says he would simplify. “I’m a big proponent of simple living, and I believe you don’t need a lot of money to enjoy life, so I’d like to be a little more intentional about that. Another thing I’ve wanted to do for a long time is get more involved with charitable organizations like Habitat for Humanity.”

  • How to Remove a Recurring Carpet Spot

    WALNUT CREEK — A common phenomenon experienced by those with carpet in their homes is a spot that continues to reappear, even after repeated cleanings. Fortunately, this isn’t a hopeless situation: by using the correct technique, you can eliminate a recurring spot once and for all.

    The first step is to remove any soil currently present in that area of the carpet. Using a warm, wet, wrung-out towel, work from the outside of the spot toward the middle, wiping in one direction all the way around. Intermittently alternate to cleaner sections of the towel as you go.

    Next, using a mister filled with a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water, spray over the surface of the spot and wipe again, this time with a dry towel. Be sure to use a towel that won’t bleed (preferably white cotton). Wipe using the same motion as before, in one direction, all the way around the spot. This will neutralize any residual chemicals left over from prior spot cleanings.

    Lastly, you’ll want to rinse the vinegar and water out of the carpet. To do this, get a new, wet, wrung-out towel and, using the same motion as in previous steps, wipe all the way around the spot. This should permanently stop the spot from reappearing.
