Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for electrical contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Serge Electric, customer satisfaction comes down to one simple factor: providing services that fulfill a variety of needs. “Our goal is to build long-term relationships with our clients, and a big part of that is being willing to do whatever’s necessary,” says owner Sergey Ivanov. “That’s why we never say ‘no’ to a job–whether it’s a small service appointment or a large project like a tenant improvement, we’ll be there to take care of it.”

Serge Electric has been providing electrical services for residential, commercial and industrial clients throughout the Greater Bay Area since 2006. The company has the training and equipment to handle everything from light switch installations and panel replacements to complete lighting system designs and installations, and it also offers electrical audit services to customers who want to reduce their energy usage.

Unlike electrical contractors that have limited experience when it comes to working on a wide range of projects, Serge Electric utilizes its versatile background to handle any type of electrical work its clients need. “We’ve worked on a lot of commercial spaces in the past, including restaurants, offices and retail stores, but recently we’ve been getting more into the residential sector,” explains Mr. Ivanov. “With our wide-ranging experience, we have the capabilities to solve any problem we come up against.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Serge Electric is its ability to work with budget-sensitive clients. “Whenever possible, we try to eliminate extra costs on our clients’ projects,” affirms Mr. Ivanov. “Whether it’s providing alternative options or re-using existing components that are still in good condition, we do our best to make things affordable and avoid unnecessary expenses.”

Industry Info

If your home’s electrical system is outdated, consider implementing modern upgrades. As our dependency on electrical energy continues to increase, the electrical systems in many older homes are ceasing to fulfill modern power needs. So, if your home’s electrical components are outdated, it may be time for an upgrade.

One telltale sign it’s time to upgrade is if your home still has two-pronged electrical outlets, which, according to Sergey Ivanov, owner of Serge Electric in Daly City, are indicative of an obsolete wiring system. “Generally, homes with two-pronged outlets still have knob-and-tube electrical wiring,” he explains. “Besides being very old, this style of wiring doesn’t have a ground conductor, which increases the risk of electrical hazards.” For those who can’t afford a whole-home rewire, Mr. Ivanov says there’s an alternative option. “You don’t have to rewire your home to upgrade your outlets to three-pronged receptacles—you just need to have GFCIs installed on those outlets. This provides artificial ground fault protection, which reduces the risk of electrocution.”

Another reason to consider upgrading is if your home’s electrical system runs on fuses instead of circuit breakers. “Most fuse boxes are at least 30 years old and were designed for a much lower power output than is needed today,” says Mr. Ivanov. “If you use a lot of electrical appliances and devices, it can cause your home’s electrical wires to overload, which leads to overheating and creates a fire hazard. So, if your home is still running on an old fuse box, you should consider upgrading it to a circuit breaker panel.”

A third reason to upgrade your electrical system is if there aren’t enough outlets in your home to serve your needs. In this case, you may find yourself plugging in a lot of extension cords and power strips, which, according to Mr. Ivanov, can lead to a dangerous situation. “It’s unsafe to have a lot of extension cords running through your home—they should be used temporarily, not permanently,” he says. “Installing additional outlets is a good solution to this problem, and it’s quite affordable as far as electrical upgrades go.”

Sergey Ivanov: A Surge of Ambition

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

DALY CITY — Bolstered by a firm sense of ambition, Sergey Ivanov left his home country of Russia to pursue a better life in the United States. “I came to the U.S. with my wife and daughter in 2000,” he affirms. “I had already been working as an electrician in Russia for about seven years and was ready to take my skills to a place that provided more opportunity. Coming to a new place was challenging, especially becoming acquainted with the language, but I was determined to succeed. In 2006, I got my license and started my business, and it has been going very well.”
Today, as owner of Serge Electric, Sergey says his favorite part of his job is restoring and revamping his clients’ power. “I enjoy solving my customers’ problems and improving the safety and functionality of their electrical systems. At the end of the day, that’s what gives me the most satisfaction.”
A resident of Daly City (where he lives with his wife, Lilia, and their son, Max), Sergey expresses his appreciation for life in the Bay Area. “We live in the most beautiful place in the world,” he says. “Everything is great, from the weather to the food and entertainment. We love it here.”
Outside of work, Sergey likes spending time with family and friends. “My son is involved in martial arts, so I go with him to practice and encourage his progress,” he says. “I also enjoy taking walks with my family, going fishing with friends and traveling. Besides going on vacation to places like Hawaii and Mexico, we take regular trips to San Diego to visit my daughter, Kristina, who is currently attending college.”
Seventeen years after coming to the U.S., Sergey has no regrets about his big decision. “Since coming here from Russia, our lives are much better,” he says. “We own a house, I have a business and my daughter is going to college. It just goes to show the kind of opportunity that’s here. You can do anything you want to do, and that makes me very thankful and proud to be here.”
When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Sergey says he’d reconnect with some old friends. “I would take a trip to Russia and visit some friends I haven’t seen in several years. It’s hard to come to a new country and leave everyone you know behind, and early retirement would provide a good chance to reestablish those old connections.”

  • GFI Protection in Ungrounded Homes

DALY CITY — Ground fault circuit interrupters (GFIs) are commonly used in bathrooms, kitchens and other areas where the presence of water brings an increased risk of electric shock. However, not everyone knows that GFIs are also a good protective measure in homes that aren’t grounded.

You can tell if a home’s electricity is grounded simply by looking at its outlets. If they only have two prongs, they’re not grounded—that’s what the third prong in a three-pronged outlet is for. Two-pronged outlets are common in homes that have old knob-and-tube wiring, which is a predecessor to today’s modern wiring.

In a home with ungrounded outlets, GFIs can literally be lifesavers. If a person gets electrocuted from an outlet that isn’t grounded, they’ll be exposed to the full voltage coming out of it, which may be up to 20 or 30 amps of electricity. A GFI breaker protects against this by measuring the voltage coming to and from the outlet and sensing when the electrical current is taking an unintended path, which is known as a “ground fault.” When the GFI senses a ground fault, it immediately trips to protect the user (the recipient of the current’s unintended path) from electrocution.

If your home’s electrical system isn’t grounded, the ideal solution is to replace your old knob-and-tube wiring with wiring that conforms to modern standards. However, if you can’t afford a whole-home rewire, consider the more affordable option of outfitting your outlets with GFIs. Either way, don’t put off resolving this dangerous state of affairs—call an electrician and get it taken care of as soon as possible.

  • Avoiding Dangerous Conditions with Electrical Fuses

DALY CITY — Long before circuit breakers were developed, homes used to get their electricity from fuses. This is still the case for some homes that have their original fuse boxes. However, even if they’re functional, using fuses to power your home can lead to a potentially dangerous situation if you aren’t careful.

The biggest problem with using fuses to power your home is power needs have significantly increased over time. Since fuse boxes weren’t designed to handle modern power loads, homeowners often have to increase the sizes of their fuses from 15 amps to 20, 30 and even 40 amps. This ongoing inflation of fuse sizes is very dangerous because it puts the wires at risk of overheating and starting a fire.

If you find yourself in this situation, call an electrician to evaluate your system. In some cases, you may be able to redistribute the power load so it’s not all saddled on a couple of fuses. Even better, consider replacing your old fuse box with a modern circuit breaker box, which will bring improved performance and safety.

  • Video: Avoiding Electrical Fuse Burnout

    Complete Video Transcription:

DALY CITY — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you find yourself using bigger and bigger fuses to fulfill your home’s power needs, it’s time to update your electrical system. To learn more we’re with Brian Polli of Serge Electric speaking on behalf of our Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Sergey Ivanov.

Brian Polli: Yes, in old houses with fuse boxes, they used to have a 10 or 15-20 amp fuse. When you put the 15 amp fuse, that would burn out. You’d put a 20 amp fuse, that would burn out. Put a 30 amp fuse, that burns out. Then you put a 40 amp fuse, and you burn your house down.

So, the best thing to do, is that if you keep on having to put in larger and larger screw-in fuses, call an electrician out, have him re-evaluate the system so that maybe you can move some power different places. But to increase those fuses, you’re just guaranteed to eventually overheat your wires and burn your house down.

  • Video: The Value of GFI Protection

    Complete Video Transcription:

DALY CITY — Host, Sarah Rutan: When it comes to electrical safety in the home, GFI protection is a top priority. To learn more we’re in Daly City with Brian Polli of Serge Electric speaking on behalf of our Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Sergey Ivanov.

Brian Polli: Yes, GFI breakers are really good in properties that are not grounded. What happens is, is that when it’s not grounded, if you ever touch something that’s not grounded, you’re going to have a shock that’s going to go all up to 20 or 30 amps, and when that happens, you get the full voltage.

Now, with a GFI breaker, the breaker measures voltage. It measures voltage coming in and going out. What’s going to happen is that you’re going to get the full voltage through your body, until 30 amps trips. With a GFI breaker, the measurement measures power out and measures power back in. So, when you touch something, and the voltage changes, and it measures it going out but not coming back in, it trips itself.

So, whenever you touch something that’s hot that’s not GFI-protected, you get the full voltage. When you touch something that is GFI-protected, you just get that measured distance between the two. Long story short, what happens is that it trips, and you’re protected.

The gentleman came to me at the recommendation of another one of his clients that we had in common. He gave me a price that was so reasonable that I wondered how he could do it for that amount. Consequently, he did the job in less time than I thought he would and he didn't give me any hassles and he didn't get in the way of any of my customers. He worked very well with us and he performed the job very professionally and he was in and out and done.

I would give him an "11". I just liked the whole relationship and I feel very comfortable calling him as I know he will give me the right price.
