Comparative Summary

Few swimming pool contractors earn the prestigious Diamond Certified award, which means they’ve been independently rated Highest in Quality. Even fewer can also claim more than four decades of industry experience, but that’s exactly the case for Royal Pools of Santa Clara, Inc. Owner Tony Adams says the company’s longevity gives its customers peace of mind because they know it will be around not only to complete their projects, but also to stand by its warranties. “In addition, we’re listed with Dunn & Bradstreet and hold their highest rating, which is important in today’s economy when consumers don’t know if their contractors will still be in business a month after signing their contracts.”

Royal Pools of Santa Clara builds custom, in-ground swimming pools and spas for residential and commercial clients throughout the Greater Bay Area. The family-owned and operated company specializes in crafting pools from gunite, a mixture of sand and cement that has become a popular design in much of the United States. “We do all the work ourselves, without the need for subcontractors,” adds Mr. Adams. “From tile and masonry work to plumbing and electrical work, we control our own destiny.”

Unlike less experienced swimming pool contractors that take a “one size fits all” approach to every job in an effort to save on operating costs and maximize their workload volume, Royal Pools of Santa Clara builds each pool to the customized specifications of the client–an approach that Mr. Adams says is important for achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction. “This industry is dependent on referrals, so we really focus on making our customers happy.”

To further differentiate itself from its competition, Royal Pools of Santa Clara offers a variety of special warranties that often exceed industry standards, including a lifetime warranty on pool structures (for the original owners) and a nearly unprecedented 10-year warranty on pumps. “Most companies only give a 3-year warranty for pumps, but we believe it’s important to cover them for longer,” says Mr. Adams. “We want our customers to know that if there’s ever a problem with their pools, we’ll do whatever it takes to fix the situation.”

Industry Info

When looking for a swimming pool contractor, find one with experience in landscape design. While swimming pool contractors can’t act as landscapers to install sprinklers or plants, they can integrate your surrounding hardscape, lawn and garden area into their pool designs. “A good pool contractor will be able to provide an overall design concept for your backyard that shows how the pool will fit with its surroundings,” says Tony Adams, owner of Royal Pools of Santa Clara, Inc. in San Jose. “Also, don’t worry if your backyard is on a hillside or slope—a quality contractor won’t necessarily need a large, flat area to build the pool.”
When you’re determining the projected cost of your pool project and planning your budget accordingly, don’t forget to calculate the increase in energy consumption. It takes a considerable amount of energy to heat a swimming pool, but if you install a solar heating system, you can significantly reduce (if not eliminate) those costs. “Building a pool is expensive enough as it is, so if you can save money on heating by incorporating solar power, it’s definitely worth the investment in the long run,” says Mr. Adams.
Instead of ordinary concrete, ask your contractor to build your pool with gunite, which is essentially a dry mix of sand and cement that’s pneumatically blown through a hose, with the water added at the nozzle. “By adding different amounts of water, a contractor can trim and shape the pool’s curves and angles much more precisely than with ordinary concrete,” says Mr. Adams. “Fiber mesh material can also be added to the gunite mix, which allows contractors to build over-engineered pools that are resistant to earthquakes.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long will it take to build my pool?

A: That depends on several variables, including the size of the pool, the landscape and the time of year. Most of our jobs take six to 10 weeks to complete. The permitting process can add up to 90 days, depending on where you live.

Q: Do you negotiate on price?

A: No, but we’ll give you the best possible price right out of the gate.

Q: Do you make saltwater pools?

A: Not anymore. In the 1980s, saltwater was touted as an effective sanitization method that could eliminate chlorine, but it’s not as effective as the methods we use today.

Q: Can you use solar power to heat my pool?

A: Absolutely. In our opinion, all swimming pools should use solar heating.

Q: Do I need to have chlorine in my pool?

A: Yes, at least to some degree. Chlorine will sanitize your pool and kill algae, bacteria, viruses and protozoa that can be detrimental to your health. If you want to minimize the amount of chlorine you use, look into cleaning systems that use ultraviolet light or ozone.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Marc Hannigan

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

Marc Hannigan: Diving In

By James Florence , Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN JOSE — While some people gradually ease into their professional careers, Marc Hannigan was able to dive right in, thanks in part to an avocational aptitude. “I’ve been scuba diving since I was 12 years old,” he explains. “While in college, I employed my scuba experience to get a job as an underwater swimming pool repairman, which was a great way to make extra money during the summer.” From there, Marc went to work for a company called Adams Pool Solutions, where he gained further experience in swimming pool service and repair. Three decades later, when company owner Tony Adams purchased Royal Pools of Santa Clara, Inc., Marc received not only a promotion but a chance to get involved in another aspect of the field: new pool construction. “We did a lot of remodeling at Adams, but building a pool from scratch was a whole new ballgame,” he says. “I still consider myself in the learning process.”

Today, as vice president of Royal Pools of Santa Clara, Marc says his favorite part of his job is its daily challenges. “I enjoy the fact that there’s an ongoing learning process, with new challenges every day. In addition to the job itself, the customer service aspect can pose its own challenges. One of the things I like most is talking with a customer who’s upset, educating them and bringing them over to our side so they become an advocate rather than an adversary.”

A resident of Walnut Creek (where he lives with his wife, Megan), Marc expresses his appreciation for the versatile Bay Area landscape. “We have access to so many different areas and activities here. There’s the ocean, which is a major source of recreation for me, as well as San Francisco and the Sierras. Basically, anything you could want to do, it’s not too far away.”

Outside of work, Marc spends much of his time immersed in aquatic activities. “As I said, I’ve been scuba diving my whole life, and I still enjoy it today,” he affirms. “I used to do a lot of spearfishing, but with the fish population in decline, I’ve switched to underwater photography, which has taken me all over the world, from Fiji to the Caribbean.” When he’s not taking snapshots of marine wildlife, Marc can often be found reading a book or playing guitar in his band, Mud Daddy. Additionally, he enjoys spending time with his and Megan’s two grown children.

In regard to his professional career, Marc espouses the value of investing in customer satisfaction. “Rather than spending a lot of money on advertising, we’d rather invest in doing right by our customers,” he explains. “When you go the extra mile for someone, you gain an advocate for life, and the positive word of mouth that generates is the most valuable form of advertising a business can have.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Marc says he’d spend more time in the water. “I have some property in Washington, so if I retired, I’d probably move up there and spend my days diving in Puget Sound. The diving up there is remarkable—plus, there’s a lot less traffic.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: Do you collect anything?
A: Diving gear and underwater photographs I take.

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?
A: Any place that has good sushi.

Q: What’s your favorite sports team?
A: The San Francisco Giants.

Q: How do you like your eggs?
A: Scrambled.

Q: Do you have a favorite book?
A: I have a few, but one that stands out is “The Drifters” by James Michener. I read it about 40 years ago and it became the blueprint for my travels through Europe as a young man.

  • Crucial Aspects of Pool Construction

SAN JOSE — A new swimming pool is one of the largest investments a homeowner can make, so it only makes sense to plan carefully. Here are some crucial aspects to consider when planning for your new pool:

    Your contractor
The success of any pool project hinges on its contractor, so it’s critical to find a good one. Don’t just hire the first contractor you talk to; rather, get bids from at least three to gain comparative perspective. In addition to checking each contractor’s references, be sure to check with the Contractors State License Board to verify the status of their licensing. By taking the time to find a quality contractor, you’ll have greater peace of mind throughout the process.

    Purpose and design
After you’ve decided to install a swimming pool, take some time to think about its primary purpose. Will it be used mainly for exercise? Family fun? The aesthetic centerpiece of your backyard paradise? The purpose of your pool should play a major role in determining its design. You should also consider any special features you may want, like a spa, a waterfall or custom lighting. To get ideas for your pool’s design, spend some time browsing pictures of swimming pools online.

    Complicating factors
There are a number of potential issues that can affect the scope and placement of a pool (not to mention the cost). Some of these include public utility easements, overhead power lines, heritage trees and geo hazard areas where the conditions pose a dangerous risk for pool construction. Furthermore, hillside locations can be challenging and often require soil testing and engineering to ensure structural stability, which can generate a substantial cost increase. Letting your contractor know about any complicating factors early on can help you avoid delays later in the process.

Expert video tip
  • Video: Preparing for Pool Construction

    Complete Video Transcription:

SAN JOSE — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re planning to build a new swimming pool, there are a number of important details you’ll need to consider. Today we’re in San Jose with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Marc Hannigan of Royal Pools to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Marc Hannigan: Once you’ve selected a swimming pool contractor, spend some time preparing for the first meeting. Hopefully you have used all available resources to select at least three contractors to provide you with a bid to build your pool. You’ve checked with your friends, family, co-workers, neighbors, asking for referrals or perhaps, more importantly, who to avoid. You’ve also checked with the contractor’s state license board to verify the status of their license. You selected candidates with strong references and people who have been in business for a long period of time.

You hopefully have looked at company websites, scoured the Internet looking for pictures to spark ideas or to illustrate your vision. For most of us, purchasing a swimming pool is the second largest purchase we’ll ever make, so it’s well worth spending time to think about what you want in a pool and how it will be used. Is your pool going to be used primarily for exercise, or will your pool be the centerpiece of an entire backyard paradise? Will you want a spa, or special lighting, or a waterfall? Safety is also a concern, so perhaps you’ll want an automatic pool cover.

A good salesperson will help you bring your vision into reality. A salesperson intent on telling you what kind of pool you want to build probably won’t be a good choice. Probably the most important trait in a salesperson is their ability to listen. You want someone who will listen to your ideas and be able to make suggestions to create a design that fulfills your dreams while keeping in mind the budgetary constraints that most of us face.

There are issues relative to each individual property that can determine a scope and placement of a pool, and prior knowledge of these issues can help speed up the process. Things like public utility easements, overhead power lines, heritage trees, or geohazard areas will affect the contractor’s ability to build your pool and in some cases can dramatically affect the price. Hillside locations can be challenging and will often require soil testing and engineering to ensure the stability of a structure. Be wary of a salesperson who assures you that your property is perfectly suited to a swimming pool.

Ultimately, we want all of our customers to begin this process with full knowledge of all potential issues one might face, and the more preparations a customer has done prior to the meeting with the salesperson can go a long way towards ensuring a successful construction partnership.

If someone is looking for a pool, I highly recommend them.

I liked that they listened to what I had in mind. They were great to work with. They did exactly what they said they would do and they didn't try to pull any hidden costs on me. They were very straightforward and I appreciated that. I chose them because the other bids ended up being a bit sneaky about charges, but I didn't see that with Royal Pools.

They are very confident. I feel they are on the cutting edge for non-chemical based pools. If you go to most pool guys they say to dump in chlorine. I feel these guys are much more environmentally friendly. I was really happy. They were the most knowledgeable on new technologies, which was important, and they were competent. They are a very well-managed company. I was shocked that they never broke an appointment, and they came back a year later to fix a few little things. Their follow-up service and support was awesome.

I'm the president and CEO of a large company, and I thought their customer service was excellent. They met my needs and have a strong customer service focus. The subcontractor who did the solar heating was terrible, but once they were aware of it, they took care of it professionally and promptly.

They were prompt. They worked very fast and they were efficient. They finished the work when they promised. They came when they said they would come. After the pool was installed, I had some questions and they still came back. Usually, with a contractor, once you pay them off, you don't see them again. I really liked that.

They were really honest. They ordered one piece of equipment and when it came in, it was priced less than previously. They credited me the amount of the difference back. I thought that was very honest. There were no hassles. I had a lot of work done by contractors on my house and they are one of the ones I really like.
