Containerization is bringing unexpected perks to the moving industry, including efficiency and timeliness. The transportation industry is experiencing a shortage of drivers, which has impacted the way many moving companies work. To get around the lack of drivers, many companies consolidate loads and move several clients at one time, especially those who are moving long distances or out of state. However, even though this method is often more efficient and cost-effective for the moving company, it can lead to unexpected problems for consumers, including misplaced belongings and impacted pickup and delivery dates.

According to Gary Rossiter, president of Rossiter Relocation Services, Inc. in Livermore, good moving companies have overcome the challenge of fewer available drivers in a way that still caters to customer satisfaction. “The current trend is containerizing most small interstate moves,” he says. “A moving truck is nothing more than a container on a truck, so it doesn’t make much of a difference for the consumer other than it leaves them with a customized move.”

Mr. Rossiter explains that each household gets their own container, so they don’t have to share a huge truck with four or five other families. “You have exclusive use of the container, which means it will be shipped directly to the destination agent and delivered on the day you want it to be delivered,” he says. “This eliminates the chances of belongings getting mixed up and ensures household goods arrive when they’re needed.”

Delivery can also be much faster with containerized moves because they happen via express trucks that consolidate containers going to similar locations, so the van lines can move the containers more quickly and with fewer stops.

Q: Will you give me a free estimate?

A: Of course. We’ll come to your home or business and take an inventory of all the items to be moved. Some moving companies minimize the costs of moving projects over the phone and then surprise their customers with large bills, but we only give estimates on what actually needs to be moved, so our prices are very accurate.

Q: Will you meet my delivery date?

A: Yes. Some people worry that their movers won’t make their delivery dates, but since we’re a United Van Lines agent, we have the assets to meet all the delivery commitments we make. Even if something unexpected happens like a mechanical problem with one of our trucks, we can send another truck to pick up the trailer and get it to the destination on time.

Q: What’s your claims process?

A: We have a CPCC Certified claims adjuster who handles claims as soon as they come in, so we’re able to take care of most claims in-house. We only refer claims to our insurance underwriter when they can’t be resolved expeditiously in-house.

Gary Rossiter: Movin’ Right Along

LIVERMORE — Like most young entrepreneurs, Gary Rossiter started out small, performing residential relocations in a single moving truck. However, with time and persistence, his business gradually grew into something much bigger. “While attending University of the Pacific, I got a job loading furniture for over-the-road line drivers,” he remembers. “After I graduated, I decided to remain in the relocation industry because I was enticed by the opportunity to travel across the country, as well as by the prospect of being my own boss. I bought a truck and spent the next 14 years moving families throughout the United States and Canada.” Nearly 40 years later, Rossiter Relocation Services, Inc. has gone from being a one-man operation to a flourishing business with more than 50 employees.

A longtime resident of Danville (where he lives with his wife, Denise), Gary says there’s no place like home. “I’ve traveled all over the United States, so I can say with confidence that there isn’t a better place to live than the Bay Area. The climate here is beyond belief, and there’s just so much to do within a short radius. Whether you like sports, hiking, biking, museums, music or theater, it’s all close by.”

With five grown children (three of whom work for the business) and five grandchildren, it’s no surprise that the bulk of Gary’s time outside of work is devoted to family, but he’s also a sports enthusiast who enjoys playing golf and following local teams. “I love going to San Francisco Giants and 49ers games, and I personally transport all the equipment for the Stanford Cardinal away games, so I’m on the sidelines for all of those,” he says. “It’s one of those instances where work and fun intermingle.”

In his life and career, Gary espouses the importance of pursuing excellence. “One thing my father said that really stuck with me was, ‘It doesn’t matter what you do for a living—if you’re the best at it, you’ll be successful.’ I’ve always made an effort to stay at the top in terms of quality and service, and I think that’s been a significant factor in my business’ success.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Gary says he’d take a long vacation. “I’ve already traveled extensively throughout North America, so I would probably travel through Europe. The history and architecture over there is very intriguing to me, not to mention Italian food and Irish pubs.”
