Comparative Summary

Ric’s Kitchen and Bath Showroom is a general contractor specializing in kitchen and bath remodeling projects. “You can buy cabinets anywhere, but you can’t buy great service everywhere. We can coordinate the whole job, from day one to completion,” says owner Richard Plummer. He also says the Castro Valley company’s showroom is different because it allows clients pick out everything from cabinets and appliances to paint colors and flooring choices.

Once a client chooses the basics, a complete 3-D design of the project is rendered on a computer. A few days later, the design ideas are reviewed and adjustments are made, says Ric. “We tell clients all about the materials and pros and cons of each decision. We also discuss budget considerations.”

While an average kitchen remodeling costs about $60,000, the range can vary depending upon cabinetry, floors, electrical, and plumbing. “Sometimes, clients are looking for a $5,000 job, and we can talk them through what that would buy, but most people are looking for a more substantial upgrade than that.”

Most of Ric’s Kitchen and Bath Showroom’s crewmembers have been with the company for 18 or more years. The staff is trained in worksite safety and security, and is covered by workers’ compensation and liability coverage. They work closely with high-quality suppliers of cabinet lines, faucets, countertops, and other related materials. Often, those suppliers run special pricing and can offer those savings to clients. “It builds trust and long-term relationships,” says Ric, “so we pass along incentives and other freebies when possible. And it doesn’t cost us anything if, in the end, we’re recommended for another job or future work. I don’t think that’s true for everybody.

“We’ve carved out a place in the industry based on a successful history with hundreds of clients,” he continues. “We tend to cover the upper end of quality for a reason: Our customers are satisfied with the end results. We would not install items in our customer’s home that we would not install in our own.”

Industry Info

It’s smart to educate yourself and use common sense when choosing a contractor. Homeowners who do their homework and understand the details of a remodeling project are generally happier with the outcome. “When clients come to our showroom, we make sure to educate them,” says Richard Plummer, owner of Ric’s Kitchen and Bath Showroom in Castro Valley. There are so many options and types of material to choose from, learning the pros and cons of each is important to making an informed decision. Different materials have varying warranties, maintenance methods and costs, and it pays to learn what to expect.

You can build a checklist from the following questions:

• What has the contractor worked on lately?
• What’s a practical budget for the quality of appliances and materials expected?
• What are the long-term maintenance costs and methods for the flooring you choose?
• Do you want to find the most eco-friendly products and materials?
• Will you need design services from a contractor?
• What are the sources and suppliers of the materials you’ll need?

Look for a contractor that’s willing to build a trusting relationship. In an industry known for ’major investment horror stories, says Ric, it pays to build a history with someone you can turn to for additional work or repairs when something fails. It’s a very competitive industry, and businesses that establish strong local ties are usually the ones that survive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much will my job cost?

A: It depends on what materials you choose for flooring, counters, bathtubs, and appliances. Obviously, high-end appliances and cabinetry will add to the overall cost. We work with each client on an individual basis and put together the best design and package for what they can afford.

Q: How long will my job take?

A: Most kitchens take about three to four and a half weeks, and bathrooms run about three weeks. But it depends on the materials you select, as some take longer than others to receive and install. Especially if it’s custom or special order.

Q: Do you handle the permit process?

A: Yes, we request and obtain the proper permits for every job.

Q: What about security? Can I trust your employees in my home?

A: We use a regular crew that’s been with us for many years, so I’m very confident in my foremen and staff to maintain a safe and secure worksite when I can’t be there.

Q: Do you offer any guarantees for your work?

A: California law requires a one-year warranty on our craftsmanship, but we’ve been known to go beyond that. For example, I’ve had clients who call me two to three years later with a sink problem, and I’ll send our foreman right out to their house to fix it.

Q: Do you use subcontractors on your jobs?

A: Only electricians. The rest of the crew is comprised of regular staff, and the electrician we use only works for us and one other company.

Q: What’s your policy on clean up?

A: Clean up is my pet peeve. At the end of each workday, everything is swept up and all tools are packed in the truck, even if we’re coming back the next day. I don’t want to come home and step over anybody’s tools, and I don’t want my customers to do so, either. I’ve received many comments on how clean we keep our job sites. We use runners on floors and barricades for debris and dust.

Ric Plummer: An Elevated Career

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Program Reporter

CASTRO VALLEY — As owner of one of the East Bay’s premier kitchen and bath showrooms, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Ric Plummer is at a high point in his professional career. However, there was a time when being at elevated heights was literally part of his everyday job. “I started out doing framing and drywall in San Francisco high-rises, including Four Embarcadero Center, one of the city’s tallest buildings,” he says. “After fifteen years, I grew tired of working in the city and decided to go into business for myself.” As an independent kitchen and bathroom remodeling contractor, Ric started out small, making house calls and working out of a pickup truck. Eventually, he progressed from his truck bed to a central location, opening Ric’s Kitchen & Bath Showroom in 1996.

Today, Ric says his favorite part of his job is bringing clients’ projects from vision to reality. “I like it when we’ve accomplished a difficult project, and the homeowner is amazed that it came together the way I said it would. To me, that’s better than money.”

A resident of Castro Valley (where he lives with his wife, Debbie), Ric says he enjoys living in a place that offers the best of both worlds. “I like the fact that I live in the country, but I’m only five minutes from the city. It’s also just a nice area to live in, having grown over the years from a little cow town into an active and diverse community.”

Outside of work, Ric divides his time between two principal hobbies: hot rods and horses. “I love old cars and have a workshop on my ranch where I rebuild them from the bottom up,” he says. “I own six different hot rods and like to compete in car shows. My other major pastime is raising and training horses. My son, Dillon, competes in equestrian events, and during the season, he trains six days a week here at the ranch.”

In his life and career, Ric espouses the importance of surrounding one’s self with the right people. “I’m only as good as the people behind me,” he affirms. “In this business, there are a lot of variables, so it’s vital to have competent people that can keep things organized and moving efficiently. From my floor staff to our product suppliers, I make it a point to work with people I can trust and whose quality of work I’m happy with.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Ric replies that he wouldn’t. “My business is a big part of my life, and if I retired, I would miss it,” he says. “When I wake up each morning, I don’t lament having to go to work, rather, I look forward it, so I don’t plan on retiring anytime soon.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: Do you have a favorite sports team?
A: The Dallas Cowboys.

Q: Do you have a favorite band or musician?
A: Tesla. Their drummer is a good friend of mine.

Q: Do you have a favorite movie?
A: “The Swiss Family Robinson.” I used to watch it as a kid and loved the ingenuity they employed to build their house. I’ve always been fascinated by the scenario of having to survive in an uninhabited environment.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?
A: Work on cars in my shop.

Q: What was your first car?
A: A ’64 Volkswagen.

Q: What’s your dream car?
A: A ’57 Chevy.

  • How to Take Measurements for a Remodeling Project

CASTRO VALLEY — When it comes to remodeling your kitchen or bathroom, a quality kitchen and bath showroom can be a great resource. In addition to supplying a full range of material and product options, many showrooms offer the service of coming to your home and taking measurements of your kitchen or bathroom. However, if you want to save some money on your project, consider taking these measurements yourself.

Taking measurements of your kitchen or bathroom is not as complicated as it may seem. Here’s how to do it: Starting at one corner of the room, measure the distance to the next corner and write that dimension down; it doesn’t have to be exact, just close. If the wall you’re measuring contains a window or door, you’ll need to take some additional measurements, including the distance from either corner of the wall to the window/door, as well as its height. Once you’ve measured the whole room, it’s very simple for a designer or a contractor to take these dimensions and order the materials you need. Plus, you can take the money you’ve saved by doing your own measurements and put it toward a new appliance for your remodeled space.

  • Video: Taking Measurements for a Kitchen Remodel

    Complete Video Transcription:

CASTRO VALLEY — Host, Sarah Rutan: While a kitchen and bathroom remodeling company may offer to come to your home and take measurements for a fee, you can save the expense by taking measurements yourself. Today we’re in Castro Valley with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Ric Plummer of Ric’s Kitchen & Bath Showroom to learn how.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Ric Plummer: A tip for saving some money on your kitchen or bath project. A lot of companies will ask for a fee to come out and measure your job, which isn’t necessary right at the moment. What you can do is simply do it yourself and it’s very easy to do. All you would have to do is go into your kitchen or your bathroom, start at a corner and measure from corner of the bathroom or kitchen to the other corner. Write that dimension down – it just has to be close.

Then if you have a window or door in that wall, you would measure over to the window, past the window and the sides of the window. Once you do that, it’s very simple for a designer or a contractor to get the dimensions to get you a piece.

Right now when you’re starting off on a job, you have a budget and you know what your budget is. And if you go into the showroom, it’s to your advantage. Because you can learn about the products that they have, learn what your needs are and then you have a choice. Nowadays they have thousands of colors and door styles and glazing to choose from, same with the tops.

Come in and get the latest on what everybody is using and doing now. It’s to your advantage to do this. And that extra $600 or $800 that you would’ve saved by measuring yourself, you can put that towards a new appliance. And just think, it didn’t have to come out of your pocket. You did it yourself and you saved money right off the bat.
