Comparative Summary

If you asked him for the defining characteristic of gardens created by Reilly Designs, owner Scott Reilly might say the “Wow Factor.” He uses the term to describe gardens that “delight the senses and often take on dreamlike, ethereal qualities.”

“We want your garden to be a place that brings peace and transports you beyond your day-to-day worries,” he says.

Mr. Reilly is a renowned landscaper whose 20-year reputation traces back to his days attending the gardens of Tudor Place in Washington D.C., whose flora contain cuttings from George Washington’s Mt. Vernon Estate. Having burnished his credentials as head gardener at the Thom Weisel Estate, he started Reilly Designs in 2006 and quickly built a dedicated following in the North Bay.

The company specializes in “conceptual” landscape design that draws on a range of influences, including Asian, free form, contemporary, French, Mediterranean, English, American-style, and native. It embraces an approach that Mr. Reilly calls “artistic and instinctive,” one that brings to bear his staff’s deep knowledge of plants and extensive design experience.

Reilly Design creates hardscapes such as terraces and patios, addition to fences, gates, decks, fire and water elements, outdoor lighting, and pathways. No subcontractors are used; its own staff carries out all masonry, electrical work, carpentry and related functions. It also supplies year-round maintenance services.

The company is shaping up as a family affair. Mr. Reilly’s sister Kerry, a horticulturist and garden designer, is on staff, and is brother-in-law John Marchetto, also a horticulturist. Mr. Reilly also employs a certified licensed technician (CRT) who specializes in designing, troubleshooting and maintaining irrigation. Rounding out the team are skilled and knowledgeable landscapers who take immense pride in their work. They specialize in creating unique environments that stay beautiful and vibrant year-round.

Mr. Reilly collaborates closely with his associate, James Polack, a licensed Landscape Architect. Together they work with the client to achieve their unique landscape vision. Mr. Polack’s skills and considerable experience in large-scale planning and design provide the perfect complement to Mr. Reilly’s expertise as a plantsman and experience in large estate work. As a licensed landscape architect, Mr. Polack establishes a design program for each project, determining the client’s wants and needs, as well as the site’s capabilities and potential. His unique ability to see the big picture and create detailed construction documents enables him to uncover each project’s potential while providing the technical expertise necessary to support the project’s construction. Less concerned with creating portfolio projects than with meeting client’s needs and goals, Mr. Polack approaches each project as a collaborator, without imposing predetermined ideas or a signature design. He takes pride in consistently producing creative solutions unique to his clients and the challenges and opportunities of their environment.

Scott Reilly: An Inspired Turn

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN RAFAEL — After spending most of his landscaping career maintaining private estates, Scott Reilly took an inspired turn by switching his focus to landscape design. “I started in landscaping as a teenager, when my brother got me a job working on a private estate on Long Island,” he remembers. “After graduating high school, I moved to Washington, D.C. and got a job with a local landscaping company. From there, I worked as a head groundskeeper for a number of private estates along the East Coast. In 1996, I moved to California, where I spent 11 years working on a private estate in Ross. Finally, in 2006, I quit doing estate work and started my own business doing landscape design for residences and businesses.”

Today, as owner of Reilly Designs, Scott reflects on the motivation behind his professional transition. “Basically, I wanted an opportunity to be more creative with my work,” he explains. “When you work on an estate, you have a pretty routine schedule that stays the same year to year. In contrast, working on private residences tends to offer a lot more room for creative expression, which, as a creative person, I find very satisfying.”

Originally from Long Island, New York, Scott now resides in Petaluma, where he appreciates the horticultural versatility that exists in the North Bay. “Because of the Bay Area’s varied microclimates and the wide plant availability, there’s a lot more variety with what you can plant than there is on the East Coast. You can do a tropical garden, a Mediterranean garden, an English garden, a Japanese garden—the possibilities are endless.”

Outside of work, Scott engages in a variety of active and creative hobbies. “I have an art studio where I do ceramic sculptures, many of which I incorporate into my landscape designs,” he says. “I also enjoy cycling and writing poetry—I actually have a poetry book that’s in the process of being published.” In addition to his personal pursuits, Scott enjoys spending time with his four children.

In regard to his professional career, Scott espouses the importance of staying hungry. “Running a business is never easy, and I think when it becomes easy, maybe it’s time to retire,” he says. “Any good business should be continually evolving, and as an owner, you need to keep yourself challenged. It’s the challenges that keep you growing and invested in what you’re doing, which manifests itself in the quality of your work.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Scott says he’d expand his artistic horizons. “I certainly wouldn’t play golf,” he laughs. “Everyone has their passions, and mine are definitely more artistic in nature. I’d spend more time in my studio doing ceramics, and I might also try my hand at a few new things, like glass blowing.”

  • How to Identify a Qualified Landscaping Company

SAN RAFAEL — When hiring a landscaping company to maintain your property, one trait you should look for is strong industry expertise, particularly in the realm of horticulture. For example, a knowledgeable professional should be able to identify the majority of the plants and trees on your property, so pay attention to this while interviewing candidates. If a contractor isn’t familiar with the plants in your landscape, they probably aren’t qualified to maintain it.

To further gauge a landscape company’s expertise, plan to interview not only the representative or “face” of the company, but also members of the crew who will be maintaining your property. After all, if they’re going to be doing the hands-on work, they need to have adequate knowledge of how to perform the job. All in all, by carefully scrutinizing a company’s depth of professional knowledge, you can be better assured of receiving expert service.

  • Video: Considerations for Hiring a Landscaping Company

    Complete Video Transcription:

SAN RAFAEL — Host, Sarah Rutan: When choosing a company to maintain your landscape, there are some important things you should look for. Today we’re in San Rafael with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Scott Reilly of Reilly Designs to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Scott Reilly: So, often when I meet a client or when a client approaches me about maintaining a garden, the one thing I do mention to them is that a company should at least be able to identify the flora or the plants in your garden. You know, if not all of them, 90% of them by common or botanical name. And if they can’t do that then it’s probably not the right company to bring in to maintain your garden.

And also, I think interviewing not only the representative of the company or the face of the company but also the crew that’s going to be maintaining your property, because no matter what they need to be the most knowledgeable of, you know, what needs to be done on the property, but also they have to be competent in what needs to been done.
