I have already told people. They come in, and we show them how it all works. I would recommend them.

We liked that the owner did the estimate. Our window isn't square, so we were worried how they would install the shades. The owner figured out what to do and relayed it to the installer. The installer did it right.

Company Philosophy

“Our commitment and goal is to develop a working relationship with our clients by making their window fashion visions become reality, from the beginning stages to the end. We never leave a customer until they’re satisfied, and we guarantee they’ll be happy.”

Comparative Summary

Bart San Diego, co-owner of Rebarts Interiors in Burlingame, says his customers never have to worry about second thoughts or regrets when purchasing a window covering. “We feature a program called “Right Choice Promise,” which lets you keep your blinds, shutters or drapery for three weeks before deciding if you’re satisfied,” he says. “If you’re not, the replacement is free, so you never have to worry about living with a decision you regret.”

Mr. San Diego started Rebarts Interiors out of his garage in 1982. In the words of his wife, co-owner Rebecca San Diego, he was a “one-man band. He knocked on doors in the morning, saw clients in the afternoon, processed paperwork and installed in the evening, and placed orders until midnight.” The San Diegos built the company to its current size and success: 12 employees, working from a 2,000-square-foot showroom. Today, Mr. San Diego is the face of the company and understands the business “inside and out,” says Ms. San Diego.

Rebarts Interiors is a family business that also treats its customers like family, says Ms. San Diego. Clients are “taken care of and satisfied,” from the first estimate to the final follow-up. The company is disciplined about its follow-ups, not only writing thank-you notes but performing what Ms. San Diego refers to as “hand holding.” These reassurances are necessary and welcome, she says, given that window coverings—particular top-of-the-line Hunter Douglas products—can be a significant investment. “They’re the Rolls Royce of window coverings,” she confirms.

Window covering installation, which is always free, is performed by skilled installers who are personally trained by Mr. San Diego. Without even measuring a window, he can often foresee problems—if, for example, it’s not deep enough to accommodate a shudder. For the San Diegos, that level of expertise—rare at big-box retailers—is what truly sets Rebarts Interiors apart.

Industry Info

You can go to big-box retailers for window coverings, but you won’t get the same products or service as you would from a smaller company.

Though stores like Lowes and Home Depot carry window coverings from major manufacturers, they usually carry the lower end of the product line. “That means lower-quality materials and a smaller selection,” says Rebecca San Diego of Rebarts Interiors. “To use clothing stores as an example, think about Gap, Banana Republic and Old Navy. The same company owns them all, but they’re in different categories. Banana Republic is the high end, Old Navy is the low end and Gap is in the middle. All three are good, but only one has the quality of Banana Republic,” she explains.

Moreover, she says, large home improvement stores often limit you to a relatively meager selection of colors, styles and materials. There’s also the question of expertise. Having no other priorities or distractions, a window covering company is likely to offer a level of skill and experience that a big-box store like Home Depot can rarely match. “Home Depot employees might have difficulty answering anything but the most basic technical questions, forcing you to deal directly with the manufacturer,” says Ms. San Diego.

Ms. San Diego recommends you choose a window covering company that sells products from—and is backed by—a major manufacturer. Free installation should be part of your window covering package, she says. She also warns about operators who tack on added fees or devise ways to pad their fees—for example, charging by the window.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What kind of process can first-time clients expect?
A: “We recommend you visit our showroom first. If you haven’t purchased window treatments for a while, you’ll probably be surprised by the variety of products available. Our large display of blinds and shades let you see, touch and operate window fashions in person, and our knowledgeable staff will walk you through the choices. Your showroom visit will help you make a better decision about what to buy. Then, a designer will meet with you in your home to help finalize your selections.”

Q: How long will it take to order blinds or shutters?
A: “It’s usually about 10 business days from order to delivery. Draperies take about eight to 12 weeks.”

Q: Do you offer any guarantees?
A: “Yes, we have a 100 percent guarantee— if anything breaks or falls off, we’ll repair or replace it at no charge. We also have a program called ‘Right Choice Promise,’ which lets you keep your window coverings for three weeks before deciding if you’re satisfied. If you’re not, we’ll do a replacement for free.”

Q: Do you charge for installations?
A: “We don’t charge for installations or estimates. Plus, we don’t tack on extra charges like some dealers.”

Q: How and when do I pay?
A: “Typically, we require a 50 percent deposit on all custom-made products at the time you place your order. When the project is fully installed, the remaining 50 percent is due.”

Q: Are your prices competitive?
A: “Yes. We recognize the need for both competitive pricing and exceptional value. When you look at our combination of quality, service, expertise, and product selection, you’ll see how competitive our prices are. You’ll have peace of mind that you’ve selected the most fitting products to complement your décor.”

Rebecca San Diego: Exponential Growth

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

When her husband started installing window coverings in the mid-’80s, Rebecca San Diego had no idea how much his business would grow, nor that one day she’d be working alongside him. “At the time, I wasn’t involved—I worked at a doctor’s office in an administrative position while Bart worked out of our home,” she remembers. “In the early 2000s, Hunter Douglas approached him, told him he was doing really well and suggested he open a showroom. Since he needed someone to run the showroom while he was out installing, my daughter and I agreed to join the business and take on that responsibility. From the day we opened our first showroom in Burlingame, we’ve continued to grow exponentially, to the point where we now have two additional showrooms in Los Altos and San Carlos.”

As Rebarts Interiors has grown over time, so has Rebecca’s involvement and responsibilities. “At first, I was mainly helping with bookkeeping and other administrative duties, but I eventually got into areas like management and marketing. Today, I manage the showroom, business operations and marketing, as well as oversee all of our sales and installation staff.”

Today, Rebecca says her favorite part of her job is connecting customers with the right window covering products. “I enjoy meeting customers and finding out what their needs are. Whether they’re concerned about energy efficiency or looking for a child-safe product, it gives me a lot of satisfaction to find them window coverings that fulfill those needs.”

A resident of Belmont, Rebecca spends much of her time outside of work with family. “We have a big family, including five children, four grandchildren and a lot of extended family members,” she details. “Our house is kind of the central hub where we all gather, so we do a lot of parties and holiday gatherings here.” A self-described movie buff, Rebecca also likes to catch the latest films playing at her local theater. In addition, she and Bart enjoy vacationing abroad when they get a chance. “Bart and I love to travel—we’ve been everywhere from South America to Europe to Asia.”

In regard to her professional career, Rebecca emphasizes the importance of customer service. “Customer service has always been our top priority,” she affirms. “When a customer comes in, we listen to their needs and show them all the different options that are available. From their first appointment to the final installation, we want to make sure our customers are satisfied with every aspect of their experience.”

When asked the first thing she’d do if she were to retire tomorrow, Rebecca says she’d relax. “Bart and I spend most of our time running the business, so when we retire, we’re definitely going to focus on relaxing, as well as traveling. Who knows, maybe we’ll buy a vacation home in Hawaii and live there six months out of the year!”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite movie?
A: Currently, it’s “The Age of Adaline.” I’ve watched it four or five times.

Q: If someone was making a movie about your life, what actress would you choose to play yourself?
A: Angelina Jolie.

Q: Who would play your husband?
A: George Clooney.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Africa. I’ve always wanted to do an African safari.

Q: What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?
A: Time spent with my kids and grandkids.

  • Automating Your Shades with PowerView® Motorization

BURLINGAME — If you’re interested in automating your home’s window shades, a great option to consider is PowerView® Motorization by Hunter Douglas. This sophisticated system offers some of the most advanced automation technology to date, making it simple and easy to operate your shades via your laptop, tablet or smartphone.

One of the most convenient features PowerView Motorization offers is the ability to program a schedule for your window shades. You can schedule your shades to open in the morning and close at night, which saves you the trouble of doing it manually. Furthermore, you can schedule individual shades to open or close at specific times. For example, if you have westward-facing windows that get a lot of sun in the afternoon, you can schedule those shades to close earlier in the day. This convenient function can go a long way toward keeping your home cooler and more comfortable on warm days.

PowerView Motorization also does away with wands and cords, which makes window shades simultaneously more visually striking and child-safe. Moreover, besides being operable via personal devices, PowerView Motorization is compatible with home automation applications like Google Home, Apple HomeKit and Amazon Alexa. That way, if you want to close the shades in your kitchen, you simply have to say the word.

BURLINGAME — If you’re interested in automating your home’s window shades, a great option to consider is PowerView Motorization by Hunter Douglas. Today we’re in Burlingame with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Rebecca San Diego of Rebarts Interiors to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Rebecca San Diego: When selecting blinds and shades for your home we would suggest the PowerView Motorization by Hunter Douglas. Some of the reasons why is for child safety, ease of use where you can open them all at the same time and also to hide those unsightly cords and wands out of the way. You can also program them through your smartphone or your tablet to open at seven in the morning, close at eight in the evening, anytime you want. Also, if you have a room that has a lot of sun during the day, say at two o’clock, you could program that to close at that time, so you don’t have to worry about your furniture or your rugs, or any discoloration from the sun.

The PowerView is compatible to home automation such Google Home, Apple HomeKit, and Alexa, so you could ask Alexa to close your windows at any time. “Alexa close the windows at the kitchen windows,” and she’ll do it for you. So, these are the reasons why motorized shades would make your life easier with just a click of the button.
