Rebecca San Diego: Exponential Growth
By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter
When her husband started installing window coverings in the mid-’80s, Rebecca San Diego had no idea how much his business would grow, nor that one day she’d be working alongside him. “At the time, I wasn’t involved—I worked at a doctor’s office in an administrative position while Bart worked out of our home,” she remembers. “In the early 2000s, Hunter Douglas approached him, told him he was doing really well and suggested he open a showroom. Since he needed someone to run the showroom while he was out installing, my daughter and I agreed to join the business and take on that responsibility. From the day we opened our first showroom in Burlingame, we’ve continued to grow exponentially, to the point where we now have two additional showrooms in Los Altos and San Carlos.”
As Rebarts Interiors has grown over time, so has Rebecca’s involvement and responsibilities. “At first, I was mainly helping with bookkeeping and other administrative duties, but I eventually got into areas like management and marketing. Today, I manage the showroom, business operations and marketing, as well as oversee all of our sales and installation staff.”
Today, Rebecca says her favorite part of her job is connecting customers with the right window covering products. “I enjoy meeting customers and finding out what their needs are. Whether they’re concerned about energy efficiency or looking for a child-safe product, it gives me a lot of satisfaction to find them window coverings that fulfill those needs.”
A resident of Belmont, Rebecca spends much of her time outside of work with family. “We have a big family, including five children, four grandchildren and a lot of extended family members,” she details. “Our house is kind of the central hub where we all gather, so we do a lot of parties and holiday gatherings here.” A self-described movie buff, Rebecca also likes to catch the latest films playing at her local theater. In addition, she and Bart enjoy vacationing abroad when they get a chance. “Bart and I love to travel—we’ve been everywhere from South America to Europe to Asia.”
In regard to her professional career, Rebecca emphasizes the importance of customer service. “Customer service has always been our top priority,” she affirms. “When a customer comes in, we listen to their needs and show them all the different options that are available. From their first appointment to the final installation, we want to make sure our customers are satisfied with every aspect of their experience.”
When asked the first thing she’d do if she were to retire tomorrow, Rebecca says she’d relax. “Bart and I spend most of our time running the business, so when we retire, we’re definitely going to focus on relaxing, as well as traveling. Who knows, maybe we’ll buy a vacation home in Hawaii and live there six months out of the year!”
