Robert and his team are very knowledgeable, honest, and professional in their craft. I highly recommend them to anybody interested in hydronic heating.

I think what I liked best was their transparency. They were very forthright and honest about the cost and how long it would take to do the job. Secondly, Robert's knowledge, he knows everything inside and out about hydronic heating, and his recommendations are spot on.

Robert Horky, Owner

R .H. Hydronics installs and services radiant heat systems, boilers, and high-efficiency water heaters for residential clients throughout the Bay Area. In addition to providing systems that conserve energy and save customers money on their  heating and cooling bills, the company has special expertise working on the hydronic systems of Eichler homes, which are designed to “bring the outside in” with features like glass walls and post-and-beam construction.

Owner Robert Horky says his background as a mechanical engineer gives him a unique perspective on the radiant heat system installation process. “The reason we can install any kind of heating system is because I’m able to make accurate  heat loss calculations for all types of houses. Each of our systems is customized for the environment in which it’s installed. We take pride in our installations, and we use the best possible materials and techniques to ensure high-quality results.”

R.H. Hydronics is known for using premium, extra durable hardware on every installation, including radiant heat panels that have individualized controls and high-efficiency boilers manufactured by industry leader Bosch. “Those boilers run between 90 and 96 percent efficiency, and they’re very quiet and durable,” says Mr. Horky. “By providing the right equipment for the right conditions, we’re able to greatly reduce our customers’ energy costs.”

Company Philosophy

"We believe in the importance of customer service in every aspect of our work. Our main goal is to utilize our ‘ground-up' understanding of the science behind radiant heat to assemble the most efficient system for every customer's home."

Comparative Summary

Radiant heating companies are always looking for ways to distinguish themselves from their competition, and those that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award are already several steps ahead. In addition to its Diamond Certified status, R.H. Hydronics sets itself apart by focusing on a unique branch of the heating industry that few companies are qualified to handle. “We specialize in hydronic systems, which distribute heat by using water rather than air,” explains owner Robert Horky. “Our goal is to help our customers conserve energy and reduce their energy costs, and hydronic heat is a great way to do that.”

R.H. Hydronics has been installing and servicing radiant heat systems, boilers and high-efficiency water heaters for residential clients throughout the Bay Area since 2010. The company also has special expertise working on the heating systems of Eichler homes (which are designed to “bring the outside in” with features like post-and-beam construction and glass walls), and it only uses premium hardware like radiant heat panels that have individualized controls and high-efficiency boilers made by industry leader Bosch.

Unlike less experienced radiant heating companies that strive to reduce their operating costs by only installing prefabricated system models or styles, R.H. Hydronics customizes each customer’s heating system for the specific needs of their home. “We make heat-loss calculations for every house and build the heating system to serve the needs of that particular environment,” explains Mr. Horky. “We never want a client’s energy costs to increase because of an inefficient heating system, so we always make sure to install the right equipment for the right situation.”

Another attribute that sets R.H. Hydronics apart from its competition is the vast amount of mechanical engineering expertise Mr. Horky brings to every job. “In my native Austria, you have to be a mechanical engineer in order to work on these types of heating systems, so I’m very experienced and educated in this field,” he explains. “My engineering background gives me the tools I need to ensure a job well done.”

Industry Info

Consider the benefits of installing a radiant heating system in your home. Today, the predominant method of indoor heating is “forced air,” which means temperature is maintained by the distribution of hot air throughout a home. Radiant heat, on the other hand, uses water channeled through a boiler system as the principal medium for maintaining temperature. Not only does it represent a unique approach to indoor heating, it also provides several advantages over the forced air method.

The biggest advantage of radiant heat is the superiority of its process. A forced air heating system necessitates constant air movement, which means dust particles are continuously being blown around, which can exacerbate the symptoms of people with allergies. Also, forced air produces an uneven distribution of heat, resulting in random cold spots throughout the home. Conversely, radiant heat warms homes without any of these disadvantages. “Since radiant heat doesn’t rely on air movement, it provides a more even distribution of heat throughout the entire indoor environment,” explains Robert Horky, owner of R.H. Hydronics in San Rafael. “There’s no temperature variation within the system, which means no cold spots, and since there’s no air movement, it provides better indoor air quality.”

Because of the even distribution of heat, a home running on radiant heat is typically about three degrees cooler than a home using forced air. This superior heat distribution results in a more comfortable environment that doesn’t require the homeowner to overuse their heater, which often happens with forced air systems. That’s why energy usage in a home that runs on radiant heat tends to be much lower. “Because of its shortcomings in the way of heat distribution, forced air will never be as energy-efficient as radiant heat,” states Mr. Horky. “For example, if you open a door in a house with a forced air system, all the warm air immediately goes out, but in a radiant heat situation, the room instantly adapts to the change in temperature.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will my home be able to support a radiant heating system?

A: Yes. We can retrofit any type of house to use radiant heating.

Q: What’s the life expectancy of my boiler?

A: The typical life expectancy of a European-built boiler is between 12 and 15 years if it’s maintained annually. Maintenance is very important—you have to clean the heat exchanger and everything else inside the boiler to prevent it from breaking down.

Q: Do you offer a maintenance program for boilers?

A: Yes. Our boiler maintenance program includes cleaning out the heat exchanger and testing the system for leaks and other problems.

Q: What’s the typical efficiency rate of a boiler?

A: California law requires all boilers to have a minimum efficiency rate of 85 percent, but some go all the way to 98 percent.

Q: Can I integrate my heating system with a solar system?

A: It’s costly, but you can definitely integrate with solar if you want. You’ll get a 30 percent tax credit from the government, and your energy bill will be reduced to almost nothing.

Compared to a lot of companies that want to come out and force you to spend a lot of money on an estimate that doesn't apply to the job, and is usually wrong, this company is the opposite. I basically got an estimate over the phone, and it was the same even after they sent a guy out. That tells me that they know how much it costs to do their job, and there's no drama to figure it out.
