This will stop the door from rattling when it opens and closes.</li> <li>Replace worn or damaged hinges—they can make the whole door loose and cause vibrations, rattling, and grinding noises when you open or close it.</li> <li>Lubricate the track, springs, rollers, chains and other moving parts of your garage door. Keeping these areas lubricated will cut down on noisy vibrations and keep the moving parts functioning more smoothly. This should be done every six months, or when you notice your garage door getting louder.</li> <li>Swap metal rollers with nylon or plastic ones. “Nylon rollers are much quieter than plastic rollers,” says Mr. Prendergast. “They’re also more durable, so they’ll last longer.”</li> <li>Garage door silencers and soundproofing kits are also available. These kits stop vibrations from traveling through the garage roof to the rooms above.</li> </ul>

HAYWARD — A common scenario experienced by homeowners is a garage door that’s stuck in the open position, which is usually accompanied by a blinking overhead light and clicking sound. If you experience this, you may think you need to call a professional. However, in most cases, this issue stems from a problem with the safety sensors, which is something you can usually solve yourself.
Situated at about ankle height on either side of the door, the safety sensors protect against door-related injury and damage. Either sensor has an “eye,” which enables it to transmit a signal to the other. In order for the door to function properly, these two eyes need to be in alignment. If communication between them is interrupted, the garage door won’t close.
There are a couple things that can cause the safety sensors to malfunction. One is if something is blocking the transmission between the two eyes. Many times, the cause is obvious; however, even something as insignificant as a spider web can interrupt the signal, so be sure to look closely when checking for obstructions.
The other possibility is that the sensor eyes are out of contact with each other. Either sensor has a green light; if the light is solid, you know the sensors are in alignment. If the light is blinking (and there are no obstructions), try readjusting one or both sensors until the light is solid on both sides.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Pat Prendergast: Today we want to give you a tip on how to potentially fix your own garage door problem, which may be just the censor eyes, which you can line up yourself. If your door won’t go down, then it’s possible that it’s just the sensor eyes and you can fix it yourself. If your door won’t go up, you probably need a professional to come out and help you fix your door.
But you can see here there’s a green light and it’s solid, and if they’re both solid on either side, that means the two lights are meeting each other and it’s safe for the door to go down. Often people think that both lights have to be green, that’s not true. They both have to be solid, generally, depending upon the opener and the sensor eyes used.
So if something’s in the way, you can see that the light will go out, because it thinks that there is something in the way and therefore the door should not go down as a safety precaution. As I take my hand away, you can see the solid green light comes off. Lots of things can cause the safety eyes to not see each other. Sometimes people will inadvertently hit them, and therefore they won’t be lined up.
Sometimes there’s cobwebs or dirt that grows over time so it thinks that there’s something in the way, or sometimes there actually is something in the way, as you can see when I put this in the way of the sensor eye it turns off.

If the light is blinking and it’s making a clicking noise, it most likely is your sensor eyes. So you can save yourself some time and money by checking your sensor eyes before calling us.

DUBLIN — As a union tradesman, Steve Moore was in between projects when he decided to take advantage of a fresh opportunity. “Before I got into residential HVAC, I was working out of a union shop in San Francisco,” he recounts. “I had just finished a big project and was waiting around for the next job, as is often the case with union work, and in the meantime I started doing jobs for friends and family. It wasn’t long before I realized waiting for union jobs didn’t make much sense when I had people ready to give me work. Ultimately, I decided to leave the union and start doing residential HVAC work, and that’s what I’ve been doing ever since.”
Today, as owner of Moore Mechanical Heating &amp; Air Conditioning, Steve says his favorite part of his job is interacting with employees and customers alike. “I enjoy training my employees and watching them grow and be successful in the industry. Of course, I also get a lot of satisfaction from providing our customers with a high level of expertise and professionalism.”
A resident of Danville (where he lives with his wife, Wendy), Steve expresses his appreciation for the character of Bay Area work and life. “We’re very lucky in that we have both great weather and access to outdoor activities with the beach and mountains close by. From a business perspective, the Bay Area offers everything from excellent demographics to cutting-edge technology, so it’s great being able to offer the best systems to customers who appreciate quality.”
Outside of work, Steve engages in a variety of active pastimes, from outdoor pursuits to charitable activities. “I’m an avid cyclist and enjoy both mountain biking and road biking, the latter of which I do somewhat competitively,” he says. “I also do a lot of camping in the mountains with my family. Other than that, my wife and I are very involved in our church and like taking part in missions, both locally and abroad.”
In regard to a professional philosophy, Steve espouses the importance of the customer experience. “We’re committed to providing our customers with a great experience from start to finish,” he affirms. “This starts with the initial phone call and goes all the way through the job’s completion. We want each customer to feel great about the decision they made in hiring us, to the point where they can’t help but tell their friends and family about it.”
When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Steve says he’d take his cycling hobby to a new locale. “I’d go for a week-long cycling trip in Italy. Of course, long-term, I would continue contributing to my business through training and teaching, and just make sure it continues to be healthy going into the future.”

HAYWARD — Pat Prendergast started his professional life in the financial industry, but over the course of time, he began to feel the desire for a change of pace. “After more than 25 years in banking, I decided I wanted to switch to a more customer service-based line of work,” he recounts. “My wife, Amie, and I started looking around for a local service company to purchase. When we came across Precision Door Services of the Bay Area, it seemed like a good fit. We liked the idea of working one-on-one with homeowners and helping them with an important aspect of their homes.”
Today, Pat says he enjoys the feeling of gratification he receives from making his customers happy. “My favorite part of the job is getting positive feedback from customers after we’ve finished our work. Being able to do something customer satisfaction-based after all my years in the financial sector has been very rewarding.”
Originally from Philadelphia, Pat moved to the Bay Area 25 years ago, where he says he continues to appreciate the region’s many characteristic attributes. “I love the beautiful weather and the fact that there are people from all different cultures and parts of the world. Plus, there’s a lot of great food.”
Outside of work, Pat spends the bulk of his time with Amie and their three daughters, Madlynn, Alison, and Charlotte. “Our girls are involved in sports like lacrosse and soccer, so we spend a lot of time attending their sporting events on the weekends,” he says. “We also like going on family hikes and bike rides, and we’re actively involved in our church.”
Pat says being successful in a service-based business requires a customer-oriented frame of mind. “At the end of the day, we want each of our customers to be happy and satisfied with the work we’ve done. We install and repair more than 5,000 garage doors every year, but we make it a point to treat each job and customer with the same level of care and respect.”
When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Pat says he’d go on a safari. “I’d probably take my whole family on a trip to Africa. I’m fascinated by wildlife and nature shows, so I think getting to see that in person would be amazing.”
