Comparative Summary

Oakland Auto Works is a full-service mechanical auto repair shop that has special expertise in brands such as Acura, Honda, Mazda, Nissan, Subaru and Toyota. “We don’t want to be a one-visit shop,” says owner Glen Poy-Wing. “Our objective is to develop long-term relationships with our customers. We even use a comprehensive database to track their vehicle maintenance over time.”

Oakland Auto Works’ mechanics take time to educate customers about the maintenance work their cars are receiving and why it’s necessary. They use visual aids and straightforward explanations to clearly explain the details of every repair.

Mr. Poy-Wing says Oakland Auto Works is especially adept at identifying problems. Using assessment files, the company’s mechanics sit down with customers and ask them to explain, in their own words, the problems they’re experiencing with their cars. “Then,” says Mr. Poy-Wing, “we narrow down possible solutions and explain them in layman’s terms.” The company can also conduct test drives with customers to help determine particular problems by identifying and isolating problem noises, vibrations and other symptoms.

Oakland Auto Works also prides itself on offering exceptional customer service. “We have very little mechanic turnover, and we’re extremely proud of that,” says Mr. Poy-Wing. “Our mechanics know our customers, procedures and systems. And since they specialize in certain models, they’re often able to identify problems that other shops can’t, because they’ve seen them before.”

Oakland Auto Works’ management and staff attend new classes and training programs to stay updated on all the vehicle models the company services. “Fortunately for us, we’re part of the AAA group, and they offer substantial training classes,” says Mr. Poy-Wing. “We also attend classes sponsored by our vendors and use local colleges that offer training in any new technologies that come to the market.”

To help its customers manage long-term service, Oakland Auto Works sends reminder cards for required services based on suggested manufacturers’ maintenance schedules.

Industry Info

When comparing auto repair shops for routine service, make sure they specifically explain their offerings. If a shop offers a 30,000-mile service package, for example, it’s important to confirm what is and isn’t included. Some independent shops vary on what’s included based on their own systems. Bring your vehicle’s manufacturer’s service schedule and get a quote for those specifics rather than relying on what a shop may offer.

Visit a shop’s website to see what other customers say about it, then call the shop and talk to someone to get a sense of their expertise. Another option is to “audition” a shop by going in for a small repair or service.

That way, you can get a feel for its operations before proceeding with major services or repairs. Never use the phrase “tune up”—it’s a vague term that can be interpreted in many ways. It’s more helpful to explain a specific problem and let the service personnel explain how they would proceed.

While there are always reputable new shops opening, researching how long a shop has been in business can often reflect on its reliability and experience. When visiting a shop for the first time, a few easily identifiable indicators can be helpful:
• Is the shop clean? Does it appear professional and organized?
• Do you feel safe at the shop’s location?
• When you walk in, does anyone acknowledge you and give you attention?

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you have a shuttle service?

A: Yes. We can take customers to their homes or workplaces within about a five-mile radius from the shop.

Q: Are there local transit services available near the shop?

A: We’re easily accessible by our shuttle, local shuttles and buses. We’re next to Kaiser Permanente hospital, where there’s a community shuttle that leaves every 15 minutes.

Q: Can you make arrangements to have my car delivered to me?

A: Yes. Customers can also pick up cars in the morning before we’re open, and we can make arrangements for after-hours pickups.

Q: What’s your warranty?

A: Our service warranty is 24 months or 24,000 miles.

Q: Do you work on repairs and coordinate with insurance companies?

A: We work with most major insurance companies and with some manufacturers with extended coverage plans. However, we always caution that some insurance companies don’t want to cover the use of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts for repairs.

Q: Do you do auto body work?

A: No. We’re strictly a mechanical service center.

Glen Poy-Wing: An Unexpected Education

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

OAKLAND — As a young man living in Trinidad and Tobago, the last thing Glen Poy-Wing expected when he took his car in for maintenance was to receive a crash course in auto repair. “My uncle owned an auto repair shop, so I brought my car to him to have some work done,” he remembers. “He said, ‘Sure, no problem—the tools are over there. I’ll tell you how to do it, but I’m not going to do it for you.’ At first I was a little upset, but it wasn’t long before I found myself really enjoying it.”

While Glen quickly gained knowledge by frequenting his uncle’s shop on the weekends, he soon realized there was much more for him to learn. “My uncle was a self-taught mechanic—he was very good at his job, but I had so many questions that he couldn’t answer. I realized if I wanted to pursue automotive work as a career, I needed to have a more formal education, so I decided to go to school and study automotive engineering.” After earning his degree at Robert College in New York, Glen returned to his home country and opened his first auto repair shop.

After returning to the United States just a few years later, Glen immediately set about establishing himself in the local industry by working at a couple of repair shops in the East Bay Area. It didn’t take long for him to notice a disturbing trend. “I found that most shops had a tendency to dictate things to their customers rather than explain things or give them options,” he says. “In contrast, my view was that a shop should be focused on educating customers and including them in the repair process.” With this vision in mind, Glen struck out on his own and founded Oakland Auto Works in 1991.

As a resident of El Sobrante (where he lives with his wife, Elizabeth), Glen says he appreciates the cultural diversity that characterizes the Bay Area. “In the Caribbean, it’s a big melting pot, with all different types of people living together. I think that’s why the Bay Area has always felt a lot like home to me.”

Outside of work, Glen engages in a variety of active pastimes, from go-cart racing to cross training for athletic competition. “I’ve always wanted to be a triathlete, and I recently took the step of joining a local triathlon club,” he says. “I’m looking forward to competing in my first triathlon very soon.” In addition to expanding his physical abilities, Glen is broadening his artistic horizons by learning to play the steelpan, which is the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago. When he’s not occupied with one of his many hobbies, he enjoys spending time with his daughter, Danielle, and granddaughter, Kya.

When asked what his future retirement might look like, Glen says he’ll continue to find ways to stay active. “I know people who have retired, and all they do is hang around and relax, which I don’t think I could do. If I quit doing auto repair, I would have to find something else to keep me busy.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What was your first car?
A: A 1969 Austin America.

Q: What’s your dream car?
A: One that I would build myself.

Q: What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?
A: The birth of my daughter.

Q: What’s your favorite snack?
A: Any type of nut—peanuts, cashews, you name it.

Q: What was your favorite toy as a child?
A: My remote-controlled car.

  • Improve the Diagnostic Process with Good Communication

OAKLAND — When your vehicle starts making unusual sounds or acting strangely, your first inclination should be to schedule a diagnostic appointment with your local auto repair shop. While a technician will typically be able to resolve the issue, you can actually help the diagnostic process by communicating accurately and specifically about your vehicle’s symptoms.

Diagnostics is one of the most time-consuming aspects of auto repair. When a customer brings a vehicle to a shop, the technicians will typically begin the process by verifying the customer’s complaint, whether that means taking the vehicle for a test drive or just running the engine. When the symptom is identified, an in-depth inspection usually follows to determine the cause.

The promptness and success of the diagnostic process can depend in part on the accuracy and detail of the information supplied by the vehicle owner. The better you can relay information to a repair technician, the more quickly they’ll be able to get to the root of the problem. In contrast, if you can’t give a good description of the problem or you give inaccurate information, it can compound the difficulty of the diagnosis.

To ensure you give good information about your vehicle’s issue, take notes and detail when and how often the issue occurs, as well as what it sounds and feels like. In any case, communicating accurately and in detail will enable your technician to confirm the issue and repair your vehicle in a more expedient manner.

  • Video: Communication with your Auto Technician

    Complete Video Transcription:

OAKLAND — Host, Sarah Rutan: When it comes to solving a car problem, the information provided by the vehicle owner can make a significant impact. Today we’re in Oakland with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Glen Poy-Wing of Oakland Auto Works to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Glen Poy-Wing: So, if your vehicle is acting strangely or making strange noises, our first concern is, is it safe for us to drive or is this going to leave me stranded? I recommend setting up an appointment with your local auto repair facility to have a diagnostic done. You play a key role in the success of this by communicating very clearly with the technicians about details of exactly what your concerns are and what’s happening to your vehicle.

A couple of tips as far as how to get this done. You need to be able to answer questions as when does it happen? Does it happen on startup? Does it happen in the first five minutes of driving? Does it happen after 30 minutes or more of driving? Does it happen when I make a sharp turn? Does it happen when I accelerate, brake, or does it happen when I go over a rough surface?

Again, the more detail you can be about the specifics of when it happens and under what conditions it happens, increases your success of having that repair done successfully.

    Thank you very much.

Well they've gone out of their way for me when I couldn't get decent help from the Toyota dealership.
