Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for plumbing companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For NIC Plumbing Co., the key to keeping clients happy is simple: draw upon its wide-ranging experience to provide them with exactly what they need. “I’m able to look at every job and consider the bigger picture, which is helpful for identifying potential issues and problem areas,” says President Nicholas Neira. “My customers really appreciate getting this information because it gives them more insight into their homes and businesses.”

NIC Plumbing has been providing plumbing services for residential and commercial clients in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties since 2008. In addition to installing and repairing all types of plumbing fixtures, the company has the in-house capabilities to repair and replace water heaters, work on gas lines, install copper piping, and more.

Unlike less experienced plumbing companies that only focus on issues that are immediately presented to them, NIC Plumbing takes the time to think through the process of every job in order to find the most effective solution. “I approach each project with a lot of thought because I want to make sure everything is done correctly,” says Mr. Neira. “For example, when it comes to sewer lines, clogging can be avoided as long as the pipes are connected and there’s constant water flow. In that situation, I’ll look at the entire system to make sure the pipes are secure, properly sloped and drained correctly.”

Ultimately, Mr. Neira sees NIC Plumbing’s owner-operated status as one of its most important attributes. “I’ve been doing this type of work for many years, so I know what it takes to provide quality and accountability,” he says. “I’ve kept my company small so I can still provide the high-level service that I started with. I look out for my customers and take care of them so they can live in comfort and not worry about their plumbing systems.”

Industry Info

When it comes to home plumbing repairs, knowing a simple rule can save you time, money and stress.

We’ve all had a dripping sink or a toilet that won’t flush, and most of us have attempted to repair these minor frustrations. But how do you know when a plumbing repair is something you can safely tackle and when you should defer to a professional?

Nicholas Neira, president of NIC Plumbing Co. in Campbell, says that deciding when to DIY and when to call a plumber can be as simple as what you can see. “As a general rule, if it’s attached to a fixed material, you can probably do it yourself. However, if it’s behind a wall or underneath something, you should call a professional. For example, sink faucets are relatively easy to install, but shower valves are better left to plumbers.”

To DIY

  • Faucets, fixtures, showerheads, and mounted finished products that can be easily removed and replaced
  • Clogged toilets, sinks and showers
  • Leaking or dripping faucets

What to know:

  • Before you start, locate the water shutoff valve for each fixture and for your home’s water main. Practice turning the valves off and on so you know whether there’s one main shutoff or multiple valves that turn off the water to different fixtures.
  • Look at your entire plumbing system. Figure out which pipes connect, where the main waste line leaves your home and where the water main begins. This may help now or in the future if you need to decide whether to DIY, troubleshoot a problem, or describe an issue to a plumber.
  • If you’re replacing a fixture, make sure you have the right tools to remove the old fixture and install the new one. Test wrenches and screwdrivers so there are no surprises once you’re halfway into the job.

Not to DIY

  • Anything behind walls, underneath floors or in crawl spaces
  • Old plumbing
  • Replacing appliances (unless you have experience)
  • Replacing or moving pipes
  • Plumbing for home renovations or remodels
  • Repairing broken pipes
  • Installing water heaters

What to know:

  • Unless you have experience with plumbing or home renovations, you should leave replacements, repairs and installations to a professional. Most plumbing work requires a permit, and doing those repairs or replacements yourself can spell trouble if you try to sell your home. Besides, leaks or plumbing issues within walls can cause major damage to homes if the work isn’t done correctly.
  • Be able to describe the problem to your plumber. When did it start? What are the symptoms? What are your concerns?

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much will it cost to complete my plumbing job?
A: It depends on the type of work, but I’ll give you an estimate before the job gets underway. I’m upfront about costs from the beginning. Sometimes I’ll find underlying issues once I start working, but I always take the time to explain what I found.

Q: What types of fixtures do you install?
A: I’ll install the highest quality fixtures that your budget allows for. I like to stick with American-made parts because they’re easy to replace if anything fails. Some imported parts are difficult to find and expensive to replace.

Q: When can I install my own fixtures and when should I call a professional?
A: As a general rule, if it’s attached to a fixed material, you can probably try to install it yourself. If it’s behind a wall or underneath something, call a professional. For example, sink faucets are relatively simple and can be installed by homeowners, but shower valves are better left to plumbers.

Q: As a Bay Area homeowner, what plumbing issues should I be aware of?
A: If you live by the ocean and have exposed copper pipes, they could be deteriorating without your knowledge, so you should have a plumber look at them.

Q: Do you have a price list that I can see?
A: I have some price ranges listed on my website, but I prefer to do a consultation because the cost can vary so much depending on the job.

Q: Why is my water pressure so low?
A: There could be a variety of reasons for low water pressure, so the fastest way to figure it out is to start with the system design and the pipes. How much water flow does your home start with at the main? How much pressure is in the main? I can check both of those things and determine what’s going on with your water pressure.

Nick Neira: Filling the Void

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

CAMPBELL — Originally a general contractor by trade, Nick Neira started a plumbing business to fill a void he saw in the industry. “While working as a general contractor, I had a hard time finding reliable plumbers,” he explains. “It seemed like the industry needed more good plumbers, so instead of continuing to depend on unreliable contractors, I decided to start my own plumbing business.”

Today, as owner of NIC Plumbing Co., Nick says his favorite thing about plumbing is the swift gratification. “Large building projects often last for several months, which can get a little repetitive. In contrast, most plumbing jobs only take a few hours, so you get the satisfaction of a completed job in a fraction of the time.”

A resident of San Jose (where he lives with his wife, Lalia, and their children), Nick spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “I enjoy playing golf, going to concerts and attending my daughter’s soccer games. She’s in high school and has been playing soccer for about 10 years, so we do a lot of traveling during the season.” Nick also enjoys taking his family on vacations to destinations like Hawaii and Lake Tahoe.

In his life and career, Nick espouses the importance of doing the job right the first time. “In life, it’s sometimes hard to know whether you made the right decision until later down the road, but with plumbing, there’s basically only one way to do the job,” he muses. “That’s why I never cut corners—I just do the job correctly the first time.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Nick says he’d gather his clubs and head to the fairway. “If I retired, I’d definitely play more golf. I used to play more regularly—maybe once a week—but these days I only have time to play about once a month. It’d be nice to be able to get out there more often.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?

A: Three Flames in San Jose.

Q: What’s your favorite sports team?

A: The Oakland A’s.

Q: What was your first concert?

A: Guns N’ Roses and Aerosmith at the Shoreline Amphitheater when I was about eight years old.

Q: Do you collect anything?

A: Antique tools.

Q: What’s your favorite holiday?

A: Christmas.

  • How to Flush a Tankless Water Heater

CAMPBELL — While more technologically advanced than conventional water heaters, tankless water heaters still require ongoing maintenance. One crucial step is flushing your water heater one or two times per year, which removes sediment buildup in its heat exchanger to prevent reduced water flow/operating efficiency.

The process of flushing a tankless water heater is very different from flushing a conventional one. Before you get started, you’ll need the following items:

    • A bucket

    • A submersible pump

    • 2 hoses (must fit the intake/outtake valves on the pump and your water heater)

    • 2 gallons of vinegar

Once your items are ready, follow these steps:

    1. Shut off power to the water heater.

    2. Close the shut-off valves to the hot and cold water lines.

    3. Pour the vinegar into the bucket.

    4. Connect one hose from the pump to the water heater’s intake valve and run the other hose from the water heater’s outtake valve into the bucket.

    5. Submerge the pump in the vinegar and turn it on.

    6. Let the pump run for an hour. This will cycle vinegar through the unit’s heat exchanger.

    7. When you’re finished, shut off the pump, disconnect the hoses, open the water line valves and turn on the water heater.
