Take simple steps to make your heating or cooling system more efficient and environmentally-friendly. Up to 33 percent of all energy costs in the United States come from indoor heating and cooling. Being comfortable inside is important for many people, but in order to save money and wasted energy, it’s also important to take steps to make your HVAC equipment more efficient. Consider the following tips:

Get equipment that’s the right size for your home. If an HVAC system is too small for your space, it’ll have to work overtime to keep the temperature even. Conversely, systems that are too big can cost a lot of money to operate. Have a professional HVAC contractor perform a load assessment to determine your specific needs and recommend a system that’s right for you.

Seal leaking ducts to prevent loss of hot or cold air. This may be the easiest thing you can do to improve your system’s efficiency.

Maintain your system. Change air filters monthly, keep coils clean, ensure the outdoor condenser unit isn’t blocked or clogged, and have your HVAC contractor perform annual inspections and tune-ups.

Set your thermostat to maintain a comfortable temperature rather than allowing temperature swings. “Don’t wait until your home gets too hot or cold to turn on your system,” recommends Jon Diamond, co-owner of Moore – Solar / Heating / Cooling in Windsor. “It’s much more efficient to set your thermostat early and let it maintain that temperature throughout the day.”

Reduce the load on your heating and cooling equipment. Turn off unneeded lights and shut down household appliances that drain electricity when they’re not being used. Avoid doing laundry or running the dishwasher at peak energy times when your HVAC system is running. Use ceiling or box fans to move air around your home. Open windows at night to let in cool air and reduce the strain on your air conditioning unit.

Don’t shut off vents to little-used rooms. “Many people close vents in their homes and think they’re saving energy, but that actually increases static pressure in the system,” says Mr. Diamond. “HVAC systems are designed for a certain amount of air flow, and blocking off registers creates too much pressure and makes them work harder.”

A: It depends on the system, but we’ll give you a free estimate that includes a complete load calculation of your house, which will tell you how much a properly sized piece of equipment will cost. We’ll also give you information and pricing on different brands and models.

Q: How long will it take to repair my HVAC system?

A: It depends on the type of repair that’s needed, but most service calls take between an hour and two hours to complete. Regardless of whether your system needs maintenance or repairs, we take the time to look at everything so we can identify possible issues and bring them to your attention.

Q: How soon can you get here?

A: We can typically come out for estimates or repairs within 24 hours of your initial call, but that depends on the time of year, our schedule and the nature of your problem.

Q: Do you offer warranties on the heating and cooling systems you install?

Jon Diamond: A Brilliant Opportunity

SANTA ROSA – When Jon Diamond was introduced to the HVAC field by a family member, he had no idea how far it would take him. “I got into the trade through my cousin, who was a union sheet metal worker,” he remembers. “After about a year with the union, I got into residential HVAC retrofitting, where I was lucky enough to get trained on design and estimating. Eventually, I partnered with Curtis Moore and we founded our own company, which continues to specialize in HVAC retrofitting.”

Today, as owner of Moore Solar / Heating / Cooling, Jon says his favorite part of his job is providing opportunities for his employees. “A lot of our employees are at a point where they’re starting families, so I love the fact that we’re able to provide them with careers that have opportunities for advancement. We have something we call the ‘sweet spot,’ which is when we’re able to match an employee with a position that utilizes their natural disposition and talents. When we’re able to get someone to a place where they’re enthusiastic about their job, that’s when the magic happens.”

A resident of Petaluma (where he lives with his wife, Gen, and the younger two of their four children), Jon likes to spend his time outside of work on active pastimes like golf and fishing. “My business partner, Curtis, is a big steelhead fisherman, so I always enjoy joining him for that,” he says. “Also, I’ve recently been on a health kick, so I’ve been hiking a whole bunch, which I really love.” Jon also enjoys spending time with his family, including his two adult sons, 17-year-old daughter and 11-year-old son.

In regard to a professional philosophy, Jon espouses the importance of three words: character, honor and integrity. “Those three words are the foundation of our business,” he affirms. “We believe that if we incorporate those three things on every job and in every decision, the financial aspect will take care of itself. I think a lot of businesses make the fundamental error of basing every decision on getting profits as high as possible. That’s not us—we’re more concerned with creating a healthy, balanced culture that ensures our customers have good experiences and gives our employees the opportunity to have fulfilling careers.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Jon says he’d take some time to recoup from the rigors of running a business. “I would probably do nothing for a couple of months—just spend more time with my family and relax. After that, who knows?”

    SANTA ROSA — Staying cool during summer can be a challenge, especially if your air conditioner isn’t working efficiently. Here are a few tips for optimizing your air conditioner’s performance during the warmer months:

    1. Change your air filter. Replacing your air filter every three months will ensure ample air flow and maintain good indoor air quality. For people who experience summertime allergies, it’s worthwhile to look into a high-grade filter model, which will provide better filtration for pollens and other airborne particles.

    2. Check your air ducts. Even if you change your air filter often, your home’s indoor air quality can still be compromised by dirty ductwork. Look inside your air ducts; if they appear dirty, use a vacuum cleaner attachment to suck up any visible dirt and dust. This will help allay summer-specific allergy and/or respiratory issues. If your air ducts haven’t been cleaned in several years, it’s a good idea to have a professional come out and do it.

    3. Maintain your outdoor unit. In order for an air conditioner to function properly, its exterior unit needs to be kept clean. Regularly check your outdoor unit and make sure there are no plants or shrubs growing too closely, as these can obstruct proper ventilation. If there are fallen leaves or other debris on, in, or around the unit, use a leaf blower or broom to clear these away.

    SANTA ROSA — Host, Sarah Rutan: As the summer season brings warmer temperatures, you’ll want to make sure your home’s air conditioner is running at peak performance. To learn more, we’re in Santa Rosa with Matthew Tindall of Moore – Solar / Heating / Cooling, speaking on behalf of Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Jon Diamond.

    Matthew Tindall: Hello there. We are back with another air conditioning season, 2016. We’re here to help you with your air conditioning needs. Here’s a couple tips that will help you out for the summer.

    The first thing is, we want to look at our filtration. It’s really important that we keep up to date on our filters. We want to make sure that we change them out at least every three months. If you folks have some allergy issues, you really want to look into the higher-grade filters, which you can find at any hardware store.

    The other thing we want to focus on, as well, is the upkeep on the outdoor unit. We really want to make sure that there’s no shrubbery or anything around the outdoor air conditioning. We want to make sure everything is nice and clean around there so that everything can breathe properly. That’ll really help the efficiency of the air conditioning and allow the A/C to work at its peak performance.

    One other thing before we go. We want to talk about the duct work underneath the home. If you folks are having breathing issues or any allergy issues, feel free to look inside your ducting, and you can go down inside of there with a vacuum and actually clean it out with a vacuum. So, that’ll help out with your breathing issues in the summertime, because there’s a lot of dust and pollens going around in the summertime.

    Other than that, we really recommend regular preventative maintenance. It’ll really help the efficiency of the system. We can get everything cleaned out for you, and everything can run efficiently and safely for the summer.
