Comparative Summary

The Mister Sparky network is one of the largest electrical service companies in America. It’s also one of the most famous, having been featured on Donald Trump’s reality program, “Celebrity Apprentice.” What distinguishes Mister Sparky most of all, according to General Manager Paul Parker, is its extraordinary guarantee of customer satisfaction, which includes:

• On-time arrival: If your electrician isn’t on time, you don’t pay.
• Guaranteed repairs: If an electrical repair fails during normal use within a year, it will be repaired or replaced for free.
• Clean service: If your electrician doesn’t wear shoe covers or leaves your home without cleaning up, you don’t pay.
• Friendly and courteous workers: If electricians smoke or swear in your home, you don’t pay.

All Mister Sparky employees are certified electricians and, as Mr. Parker explains, “master craftsmen; the very top professionals in the field.” In fact, only one in 33 applicants (three percent) satisfy the company’s strict employment criteria and pass its testing. Once hired, they undergo more rigorous training and participate in ongoing education and seminars.

Mister Sparky prides itself on conscientiousness, always respecting customers’ property and keeping work sites clean, says Mr. Parker.

Customers also have the option of joining the Power Club, a Mister Sparky program that provides annual check-ups and service for electrical systems. Designed to meet or exceed all manufacturers’ and extended warranty requirements for system maintenance, the Power Club is the best strategy for keeping systems running properly and preventing unexpected problems, says Mr. Parker.

Industry Info

Most handymen will offer to do your electrical work, but that doesn’t mean you should accept. Many general contractors and handymen claim expertise in working with electricity. But as the most hazardous system in your home, capable of causing injury and even death, simply claiming electrical expertise isn’t enough.

Moreover, poor circuit design can damage appliance motors and electronic gear by delivering the wrong amperage. Keep in mind that today’s modern appliances need stronger and more direct wiring methods than were originally installed in older homes. Many old homes have only one or two circuits that power the entire house. A new home built today will typically have 10 to 30 circuits. Lights on even partially overloaded circuits can flicker when an appliance is in use, or the breaker may trip or the fuse might blow, shutting down the circuit entirely.

Hiring an experienced electrician can help you avoid all these problems, and finding one can be easier than finding a carpenter or plumber. If an electrician is licensed—and you should never hire one who isn’t—you can assume a minimum level of competence. But go a step further: Hire an electrician who has passed a standardized test and has several years of experience.

Seventy percent of electrical problems are the result of work done by homeowners, handymen, and less-professional electricians who aren’t aware of correct procedures, recent code changes or improvements in electrical technology. This means homeowners are wasting valuable money and time trying to rectify problems that never should have happened in the first place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I’ve never had my electrical system checked out. Should I?

A: The National Fire Protection Agency says you should. It recommends a thorough check of your home’s electrical system by a licensed electrician. At Alive Electric Mister Sparky, we’re trained to identify all the potential hazards and engineering problems that homeowners might encounter with their electrical systems.

Q: What are ground fault circuit interrupters? Do I need them?

A: Ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) protect you from burns, shocks and serious bodily harm. Yes, you need them. Water and electricity don’t mix.

Q: I think I have old wiring. Can you help with that?

A: Yes. Over the years, methods of manufacturing wire have evolved—it’s safer than ever before. Alive Electric Mister Sparky electricians can evaluate your system, assess the condition of your wiring, and give you options for upgrading it. The same goes for your electrical panels. Some older designs aren’t effective by today’s standards. We can determine whether your system is still reliable enough for your demands, and if it’s not, we’ll give you options.

Q: I hear a lot about electrical surges. Are they a concern?

A: Because of growing demand on the electrical grid, your home’s electrical system can experience up to 100 surges a day. Those surges can stress your appliances and electronics, and will eventually deteriorate the circuits inside. Alive Electric Mister Sparky has new technology to protect your appliances and electronic equipment so they last as long as possible.

Q: Do I need to worry about security while your employees are on my property?

A: No. We run background checks and random drug screenings on all our electricians. We believe it’s our utmost responsibility to guarantee your safety during appointments.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Paul Parker

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

Paul Parker: Reaching for the Stars

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

CONCORD – Paul Parker didn’t expect to encounter famous people when he first became an electrician, but during his years working in Beverly Hills, brushing elbows with magnates and celebrities became part of his everyday routine. “I ended up in the right place at the right time and had a good professional reputation, which gave me the opportunity to do a lot of work for people like Sylvester Stallone, Carol Burnett and Bruce Springsteen, as well as several billionaire tycoons,” he remembers. “Being ‘Electrician to the Stars’ was certainly an interesting experience!”

In contrast to his star-studded stint in Beverly Hills, Paul’s origins are comparatively modest. The son of career restaurateurs, he was born and raised just outside of Denver, Colorado, and it was in the milieu of his parents’ livelihood that he was first introduced to electrical work. “I would always end up fixing things at their restaurant, and that included dealing with a lot of electrical problems,” he explains. “My dad used to tell me I would grow up to be an electrician, and sure enough, he was right.” Following high school, Paul enlisted in the military, which gave him an opportunity to further improve his electrical skills. After the military, he attended college and earned a business degree before heading west.

When his stint as “Electrician to the Stars” was over, Paul migrated north to take a job as a street and traffic lighting planner for the City of Oakland—a position that served to further increase the range of his expertise. Eventually, Paul felt a desire to return to his original line of work and founded his own company, Alive Electric, in 2002. The business has since become a franchise of nationwide electric company Mister Sparky, but even though the name and logo have changed, Paul says its commitment to quality work and customer service remains as steady as ever.

One of Paul’s favorite aspects of working in the Bay Area is the prevalence of older architecture in residential homes. “I enjoy the challenge of updating the electricity in an older house without compromising the original architectural structure,” he says. Outside of work, Paul enjoys spending time with his wife, Tanya, and his seven children. “I’ve always loved being a dad and doing things with my kids, from outdoor athletic activities to small building projects. I also like driving my custom Skyline sports car. Motorsports are in my blood—my mother’s side of the family is named Roush, as in Roush Fenway Racing.”

Paul credits much of his personal and professional success to his continuous drive for self-improvement. “I’ve always believed that whatever you do, you should try to be in the top 10 percentile of your field,” he says. “That’s what I’ve applied to my life and career, and it’s also what I’ve taught my kids. I’m always reading and gaining new knowledge in order to stay at the top of my game, and I’m always looking for new ideas and technology that will bring more value to my customers.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: If you had a theme song what would it be?
A: “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor. It sort of sums up the way I live my life.

Q: What’s your favorite sports team?
A: I’ve been an Oakland Raiders fan for many years.

Q: Where would you prefer to live, the country or the city?
A: I’m a city guy. I like being around people, restaurants and culture.

Q: What’s your favorite holiday and why?
A: Christmas. It’s a fun time for my family—we really get into all the traditional stuff like decorating the tree and hanging stockings.

Q: What’s your favorite movie monster?
A: I’ve always been fascinated by The Blob.

Q: What’s your favorite board game?
A: My family and I enjoy playing The Game of Life.

  • Replacing Your FPE Panel

CONCORD — To the average homeowner, one electrical panel might seem as good as another, but this isn’t necessarily true. In some instances, a panel may be out-of-date, or worse, a particular model might be faulty. One such case is with panels made by Federal Pacific Electric Company (FPE), one of the main circuit breaker panel manufacturers in North America between 1950 and 1980. In subsequent years, it became apparent that certain flaws in the design of FPE electrical panels posed a safety concern. FPE panels are common in the Bay Area, and while many have already been upgraded, plenty are still out there, which is why it’s important to identify what’s in your box.

The main design flaw in FPE electrical panels is their wiring connections, which are prone to loosening over time due to extreme fluctuations in outdoor temperature. Another problematic feature of the FPE design is the actual pathway the electricity travels through, which is smaller than necessary. Both of these design flaws leave the electrical panel susceptible to overheating.

If you don’t know the model of circuit breaker panel your home’s power is running on, it’s important to look and make sure it’s not an FPE. There are a couple indications that can help you make this distinction. Most obvious is the appearance of the manufacturer name or its acronym (FPE) on the panel box. Another indication is the color of the breakers: they’re usually orange, but sometimes they’re brown or black with white letters. If you’re unsure about the type of electrical panel you have, consult a professional electrician.

  • The Importance of Inspecting and Maintaining Your Electrical Panel

CONCORD — The electrical panel is the heart of a home’s electrical wiring system. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), homeowners should have their electrical panels inspected on an annual basis. Since there are more than 100 connections in the average panel, routine inspection and maintenance by a professional electrician is important for ensuring your electrical system runs as safely and efficiently as possible.

The main thing an electrician looks for when inspecting an electrical panel is loose connections. Since all electrical wires go to this panel, a loose connection can inhibit the efficient flow of energy throughout the home. Even more important, loose connections can pose a safety issue by causing the panel to overheat. In some instances, loosely connected wires have actually been known to melt, indicating temperatures that exceed 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

Electrical wires can become loosened due to a variety of reasons, but the most common cause is temperature fluctuations that occur with the changing seasons. Since most electrical panels are located outside the home, variable extremes of heat and cold often cause wiring connections to expand and contract, which can result in their loosening over time. That’s why it’s important to pay attention to your home’s electrical panel and have it regularly inspected and maintained by an electrician.

  • Video: How to Identify a Federal Pacific Electric Panel

    Complete Video Transcription:

CONCORD — Host, Sarah Rutan: Federal pacific electrical panels are common in the Bay Area but have been discontinued. So, today we’re in Concord with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Paul Parker of Mister Sparky to learn more about F.P.E.s.

Expert Contributor, Paul Parker: One of the things we’ve seen out in there, in the field a lot, is this type of a panel here, which is called a federal pacific panel. This is a concern, because it is a bit discontinued because of, actually, when it was manufactured they didn’t know as much about electrical as they know now. So, because of that, there were some inherent problems with these, and one of the things is that, the connections were not very tight, and so, they have a concern there that they can burn up, like this one has. And, also, the pathway that the electricity can go through is actually too small. It’s because of that, they do heat up and there’s a big problem with these.

So what I recommend is, a homeowner would take a look to see if they have one of these types of panel called a federal pacific panel or an FPE, they’ll have on the cover. And, with that, also, they can notice that there’s usually orange colored breakers or possibly they’re brown, or black with white letters. So, those are what to look for. They’ve changed them through the years a little bit, but these are actually very common in the Bay Area, possibly up to 60%, 70% of the homes have these, at one point. So, some have been upgraded already, but others have not. Many have not. So, it’s a very good thing to take a look, periodically, to make sure this is safe and have a professional electrician take a look at these and do some testing and some checking at the different points of this.
