The company was founded in 2007, but its owner, Rick Pestana, has been providing paving services to Bay Area homeowners for more than a decade.

When clients call Method Paving, Mr. Pestana comes to their homes with samples, catalogues and pictures of completed projects. “We design every job ourselves,” he says. “We also give customers local addresses of some of our completed jobs so they can look at them.” Mr. Pestana says his company never engages in high-pressure sales tactics. “We try to make it an enjoyable process. We want clients to make decisions because they’re excited about getting the job done, not because we’ve pressured them.”

Method Paving’s installers are all employees, not subcontractors or day laborers. “I truly think we have one of the best paving stone crews in the Bay Area,” says Mr. Pestana. “They treat every house like it was their own.”

Mr. Pestana says Method Paving is proud of every job it completes. “We’re here to guide our customers and share our expertise. We want to implement their visions, but if something’s not going to work, we’ll let them know. If someone already has a great design, we’ll work with it. If not, we’ll improve it until what we both envision is what goes on the ground.”

When selecting a paving contactor, make sure the salesperson you’re talking to will also be part of managing the job. “You’re going to spend many hours with the salesperson,” says Rick Pestana, owner of Method Paving, Inc. in Santa Clara. “If that person never comes back to the job, it’s going to be hard to implement the vision and quality you originally designed.”

Mr. Pestana also advises to ask about a company’s installation crews. Are the crew members employees of the firm, or are they subcontractors or day laborers? Has the crew worked on the projects you’ve seen in the company’s portfolio?

Asking some technical questions about the installation can also be beneficial. Don’t worry about knowing what the correct answers are. If you ask them of several contractors, you’ll quickly learn which ones know their business:

• How much base will you put down? How is it compacted?
• Will you use geotextile fabric below the base rock?
• What type of edge restraints will be used? (Not plastic or aluminum)
• Will you use a wet cutting saw to cut the stone? (If not, the end result won’t look as good.)
• Are you going to use polymeric sand? (Generally, that’s preferred to keep the sand from flowing away.)
• Are the pavers going to be sealed? (Sealing usually prolongs the pavers’ life.)

Q: Do you charge for estimates or design work?

A: No. That’s part of our service. We’re confident that if we get a chance to bid on a project, you’ll choose us.

Q: What’s the main reason for differences in price estimates?

A: Often, differences in price are due to a company bidding the least expensive materials. We’ll bid the materials most appropriate to your needs. We’ll use less expensive materials if you want, but only after we explain the pros and cons. We’re dedicated to customer service and want you to be happy with our work for years.

Q: How long will the job take? Will it be noisy?

A: It depends on the scope of the project, but a typical paving stone and concrete installation takes less than a week. Limestone takes longer because the concrete has to set before we layer another material on top, which prevents cracking. Demolition is noisy and the most disruptive part of the job, but it’s usually completed in one or two days.

Q: What happens if you hit a water line?

A: That happens sometimes, and when it does, we’ll fix it. If there’s a waterline two inches below the driveway and we need to go down 10 inches, we have to move the line. It’s part of the job.
