Take simple steps to keep your carpet and upholstery looking like new.

High-quality carpet and upholstery can be a significant financial investment, but by performing ongoing maintenance in between professional cleanings, you can significantly extend their lifespans and increase their aesthetic value. Consider the following tips for maintaining your carpet and upholstery:

Clean stains immediately. Once spills dry and stains set, they’re much harder to remove, so it’s important to act quickly. Use paper or cloth towels to soak up any liquid by blotting, not rubbing. If the stain is obvious, you can use commercial carpet shampoo or a mild soap (such as dishwashing liquid) to help remove the spot.

Put throw rugs or area rugs in high-traffic areas. Areas like entryways, doorways, the space in front of your favorite chair, and the small area in between the couch and the coffee table can get a lot more foot traffic than other areas of your home. Throw rugs and small area rugs are good solutions to this problem. They’re inexpensive, decorative, easy to replace, and can keep heavy traffic areas from being crushed, matted or stained.

Choose the right vacuum. The most effective vacuums have adjustable rotating brushes and filtration units that keep dust and allergens from being pushed back into the air. The rotating brushes loosen soil and dust and pull it from the carpeting, while the bag or filter traps dust and dander. Inspect your vacuum periodically to keep it functioning properly. You may have to clean the brushes or replace them when they become worn. Also, look for sharp edges on the vacuum that could damage your carpeting, walls or furniture.

Vacuum the right way. Use a smooth motion to vacuum in the direction of the carpet pile. Reverse the direction of the vacuum and go back over the same area. Once you’ve vacuumed the entire floor in the direction of the pile, switch directions so you’re moving in a 90-degree angle from your last pass and vacuum the floor again to fluff up the pile and remove additional debris.

Invest in professional carpet and upholstery cleaning. Most carpeting should be professionally cleaned every 12 to 18 months, but high-traffic areas and light-colored carpet may require more frequent cleaning. When you buy new carpeting or furniture, ask about the manufacturer’s recommended cleaning methods. Then, hire a professional carpet and upholstery cleaning company and tell them to use that same method to keep your furniture and carpet looking like new.

Q: How will you clean my carpet, upholstery or tile?
A: Every surface is different, so I do whatever it takes to complete each job in the best possible way. I never rush my work—I do it slowly and surely in order to deliver the best results. I’ll also talk to you before I start working to make sure I’m providing the customer service you expect.

Q: Will you give me a quote over the phone or will you come to my home to provide an estimate?
A: If the job is simple and small, like two or three bedrooms, I can usually give a quote over the phone. If it’s larger or more complicated like four bedrooms or a commercial building, I prefer to give a quote in person.

Q: What carpet cleaning methods do you use?
A: I can use a Rotovac machine, steam cleaning or traditional shampooing, depending on the surface and your particular needs. The Rotovac works best for carpet, especially industrial and commercial carpeting that’s flat. Steam cleaning is good for homes because it removes dirt and even pet stains. Once I evaluate your flooring or upholstery and understand your goals, I’ll be able to decide the best method to use for your job.

Q: After my carpet has been cleaned, what can I do to maintain it for as long as possible?
A: Right after your carpet has been cleaned, you should open all your windows and doors to help it dry as quickly as possible. It’s also important to vacuum often and clean your shoes before entering the house. If a stain occurs, call me right away and I can take care of it before it sets.

Q: What’s the difference between Green carpet cleaning and non-Green carpet cleaning?
A: Non-Green carpet cleaning uses chemicals that some people are allergic to. I can use Green cleaners when necessary, but not all Green cleaning materials are strong enough to clean the dirtiest carpets. If you clean your carpet every six months, it should be fine, but if you only clean your carpet every two to three years, you should use a traditional carpet cleaning method.

SAN RAFAEL — When Alex Figueroa started working part-time as a carpet cleaner, the last thing he expected was to be running the company one day. “I started working at Marin Carpet Care and Cleaning Services seven years ago,” he recounts. “I came on part-time to help my friend, Mark, who owned the business. In 2015, Mark passed away and left the company to his wife. Since we were good friends, I agreed to partner with her in running the business and eventually transition to becoming the owner. I’ve been running the company myself since June 2016.”

Today, Alex says his favorite part of his job is interacting with customers. “I really enjoy meeting our customers and getting to know them. Most of all, I love hearing how pleased they are with our work.”

A resident of Marin County (where he lives with his wife, Ann, and their children), Alex spends his time outside of work on a variety of active pastimes. “Fishing is one of my favorite hobbies,” he details. “I have a boat, and when I get the chance, I love taking it out on the ocean and spending a day fishing with friends. I also love spending time with my family, whether we’re playing soccer at the park or going to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom for the day.”

In regard to his professional career, Alex emphasizes the importance of customer service. “Carpet cleaning is a very customer-oriented industry, which makes customer service all the more crucial,” he explains. “That’s why we take the time to explain things to our customers and recommend solutions that will give them the best results. We also do our best to help customers on a budget so they can afford to get the service they need. At the end of the day, the most important thing for us is keeping our customers happy.”

When asked how his life might change if he were to retire tomorrow, Alex says he’d spend more time with family. “My family is the most important thing in my life. When you run a business, it can be hard to find enough time to spend with the ones you love, so if I were to retire, that would be my first priority.”

    SAN RAFAEL — Organic, all-natural cleaning products are very popular nowadays, and carpet cleaning products are no exception. Unlike standard carpet cleaning products, organic products don’t contain any of the toxic chemicals traditionally used to eliminate dirt and stains. For this reason, when an organic product is used to clean carpet, no toxic chemical residue gets left behind, which makes for a cleaner, healthier home environment.

    While we recommend organic products for regular maintenance cleanings, we don’t recommend them if your carpet is very dirty. Since organic products don’t contain heavy-duty cleaning chemicals, they lack the cleaning strength to remove heavy dirt and stains. In contrast, a carpet that’s well-maintained typically won’t require as intensive of a cleaning, in which case an organic product will suffice.

    So, if it has been a long time since your last carpet cleaning, or if your carpet has lots of dirt or stains, we recommend using a standard cleaning product to ensure a thorough cleaning. Once it’s clean, you can use natural products to maintain it going forward.
