Greg Lucas, Owner

Lucas Construction is a builder of quality residential and commercial projects in Sonoma County. Taking a “whole property” approach to each job, the company focuses on creating harmony between buildings and the environments they inhabit. Owner Greg Lucas pairs decades of experience with a meticulous eye for detail and is known for his perfectionist work ethic.

When the Oakland Hills were tragically affected by fires in 1991, Lucas Construction managed the rebuilding of 27 custom homes. The company was also hired to clear more than 50 lots of debris and set 30 foundations into the hillside. “Helping those families rebuild was a humbling experience that stays with us to this day,” says Mr. Lucas. “Watching our hometown of Santa Rosa fall victim to fires 26 years later was devastating. As countless friends and family members suffered immense loss, it was difficult to find ways to offer meaningful help. As the rebuilding of Sonoma County begins, we feel confident that this is the way in which we can best help. With years of experience designing, building, and traversing Santa Rosa city planning and building ordinances, we want to act as an advocate through this process.”

Company Philosophy

“We consider ourselves the ‘orchestrators’ of our clients’ construction projects, which means we act as their advocates and make sure everyone is on the same page, from the architects to the building officials to the subcontractors. Ultimately, our goal is to ensure customer satisfaction throughout every step of the construction process.”

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for remodeling contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Lucas Construction, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: take a detail-oriented approach to every project that includes paying attention to the client’s specific needs. “Our goal is to build our clients’ dream projects, so listening closely to what they want is a vital part of our process,” says owner Greg Lucas. “We interpret our customers’ ideas and utilize our technical abilities to make sure they end up with the homes they’ve always wanted.”

Lucas Construction has been providing construction services for residential and commercial clients in Sonoma, Marin, and Napa Counties since 1982. The company handles everything from kitchen and bathroom remodels to complete house restorations, and it also has the in-house capabilities to perform structural repairs, build outdoor structures like decks and gazebos, and more.

Unlike less experienced construction companies that are unfamiliar with the intricacies of working with pre-existing structures, Lucas Construction has the training and experience to take on projects that require knowledge of all types of underlying structures. “We know how to ‘take apart’ an existing structure and determine how it was built so any modifications fit with the existing home,” explains Mr. Lucas. “By getting to know each underlying structure, we can add to it in ways that make practical and aesthetic sense.”

Lucas Construction further differentiates itself from its competition by providing every project with the hands-on expertise of Mr. Lucas himself. “I’m on the jobsite every day to check the progress, make sure the quality is up to standard and confirm the client is getting everything they want,” he says. “In fact, every part of the job has to pass my personal inspection before the crew moves on to the next phase. We’re very proud of everything we build, so we never compromise when it comes to quality.”

Industry Info

When taking on a kitchen or bathroom remodeling project, be cautious of including trendy features and designs. According to Greg Lucas, owner of Lucas Construction in Santa Rosa, the best thing you can do during a kitchen or bathroom remodel is stick with the basics. “Tastes and trends change, but if you go with classic features and designs, you can accent them with the colors and items you like at the moment,” he explains. “You’ll also be able to redecorate without having to tear out tile, countertops, flooring or cabinets, which will save a lot of money.”

So exactly which trends does Mr. Lucas suggest avoiding? “Colored stripes added to tiled walls and bright tile colors in bathrooms could be a mistake,” he says. “I recommend sticking with white or other basic colors—they never go out of style, and they can be accented with different colored towels and decorations. You should also think twice about installing painted cabinets instead of wood cabinets. Since cabinets are so expensive, true finished wood is your best option in terms of longevity.”

Like colored tile and painted cabinets, colored countertops can also prove to be a costly mistake. “Granite countertops never try too hard to make a statement, but colored countertops can overwhelm a space and look dated in a short amount of time,” cautions Mr. Lucas. “They’re also big-ticket items that are expensive to replace, so you should spend wisely by installing natural stone or granite countertops that will last for the life of your house.”

As a general rule, Mr. Lucas says staying away from bold, trendy colors is a wise decision. “It’s a good idea to keep the big-ticket items and major components of your home as neutral as possible. It’s also smart to choose function over form. You can always dress up rooms and add trendy items that are less expensive, temporary and easy to switch out when trends change.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: At what point should I bring you in on my remodeling project?

A: The earlier, the better. We’ve even worked with architects during the planning phase, which is helpful for making sure the designers and builders are on the same page.

Q: What should I know about my project before I call you?

A: Ideally, you should have a good idea of what you want in your new kitchen or bathroom and how much you’re willing to spend. You don’t need to have plans, but you should know the lighting, countertops, appliances, fixtures and floor coverings you want.

Q: How long will it take to complete my job?

A: It depends on the extent of the work, but we’ll be upfront and give you an estimate before work begins. Since there are so many variables in construction work, we often give our clients a range of dates. That way, if there’s any delay with products or materials arriving, or if there are charge orders or problems with the plans, you won’t be disappointed.

Q: Do you keep a clean jobsite?

A: Absolutely. We remove our shoes or wear shoe covers any time we enter a client’s home, and we also make sure the jobsite is cleaned up at the end of every work day. Keeping a clean jobsite is important because it makes our clients confident about the quality of our work and makes it easy for us to identify potential problems.

Q: How do you bill for your services?

A: We follow all the rules of the contractor’s license law, which states that we can only charge $1,000 or 10 percent of a job’s total cost as a deposit. After that, we bill a percentage for work completed each month, so the payments are tied into the work received.

Q: Will you give me references of your past clients?

A: Yes. We like our potential clients to talk to our past clients and see projects that we’ve worked on—it gives them an accurate, timely view into the services we provide.

I refer all of my friends to Greg. The most important thing is that you can trust him. He's reliable and shows up when he says he will. His workers are considerate of the environment. They put tarps down and didn't go over my flowers. They cleaned up extremely well. I was really impressed. The workers were always polite.

The high quality of the work, it was the best. Every time people see my kitchen they say, 'Wow'. He was right there to figure out what to do with every problem and was on time for the inspector. They came up with ideas I hadn't even thought of. It's all about the little details with design. He was prompt and showed up when he said he would. I will only use him in the future. Greg came in and within 2 1/2 hours they had the kitchen completely sheet rocked. They were very professional. They even matched the wall texture in the kitchen to the rest of my house. He was amazing, just exceptional.
