Even fewer can also claim more than 65 years of industry experience, but that’s exactly the case for Livermore Optometry Group. “We’re actually a second-generation practice–one of our optometrists, Dr. Donna Kuntz, is the daughter of one of our retired partners,” says Dr. Steven Faith, a partner in the practice. “Our goal is to combine the same patient-oriented approach we’ve had since 1947 with the latest industry technology and processes.”

Livermore Optometry Group offers a complete range of vision care services at its Livermore facility. In addition to fitting people with glasses and contact lenses, conducting eye health evaluations, and diagnosing and treating eye diseases such as cataracts and glaucoma, the practice has special expertise with LASIK surgery diagnoses, corneal refractive therapy (CRT) procedures, and other specialized areas of eye care.

One of the biggest changes to optometry in recent years is the prevalence of ordering glasses and contact lenses on the Internet. Previously, people needed to visit an optometrist’s office and go through a fitting process, but modern technology has introduced a much more convenient option. “Many optometrists have online contact lens sources that allow patients to order their lenses online once they have their prescriptions,” explains Dr. Steven Faith, a partner at Livermore Optometry Group. “The lenses can even be shipped at no extra cost, which adds to the convenience.”

Dr. Faith notes that certain types of prescriptions even make it possible to order glasses online. “In previous years, the quality of glasses purchased online wasn’t very high, but that’s changing,” he says. “Now, online eyeglass suppliers have products that are every bit as good as what you’d find in a doctor’s office. Virtual styling is even possible, which means you can generate an image of how a pair of glasses will look on your face. Once you order glasses online, you can take them to your optometrist for a final fitting to ensure you’re satisfied.”

Optometric technology is also changing the way people use their glasses. Dr. Faith says one of the most exciting products to show up on the market in recent years is “super-focus bifocal glasses,” which have electronic lenses that create a no-line bifocal line that adjusts for different distances with a tap on the temple. “All you have to do is tap it and the lower half of the lens turns into reading glasses. Tap it again and the entire lens becomes available for distance vision. It’s not for everyone, but it’s one example of how technology is changing the industry for the better.”

Q: Do I need to make an appointment?

A: We recommend making an appointment if you need to see an optometrist. We have seven doctors on staff, so we can usually fit you in within a day or two. But we’re also very flexible, so we can often accommodate emergencies or juggle our schedule to fit you in without a lot of wait time.

Q: Do you treat children and senior citizens?

A: Yes, we have pediatric and geriatric low-vision specialists on staff. We can take care of any patient, regardless of age.

Q: Will you take my insurance?

A: We accept most types of insurance, including Medicare. The only plans we can’t accommodate are HMOs that require you to use their specific doctors.

Q: Can you supply me with another pair of glasses if I already have a prescription?

A: Yes. Our opticians can fit you with frames that match your sense of style or particular needs, like if you need a backup pair for playing sports. We carry a very large selection of brands and styles—almost 17,000 frames, which is two or three times more than most optometrists in the East Bay.

Q: Are your prices competitive?

A: Yes. Our fees are in line with other Bay Area providers, and our contact lens fees are usually less than what you would pay online. Also, since we carry such a wide variety of frames, we can fit you with glasses that meet both your budget and sense of style.
