Lawrence Flooring & Interiors offers free in-home estimates and free flooring samples to take home, and it stands by its installations and manufacturer warranties.

Owner Mike Goldberg joined Lawrence Flooring & Interiors in 1979 (his father, Larry, founded the company in 1971), and he works alongside a seasoned sales team that has been with him for more than 16 years. “Our flooring specialists can expertly answer questions and help people find the perfect solutions for their homes,” he says. “Our team works together to make each customer’s shopping experience the best it can be.”

Lawrence Flooring & Interiors is known for its huge selection and competitive prices. “If someone comes in to special order something, we actually give them 40 percent off the printed factory retail price,” says owner Larry Goldberg. “We don’t dream up retail prices. They come out of the books,” he continues. “So when we say 40 percent off, the customer knows it’s legitimate.”

There’s something else about his business that Mr. Goldberg considers even more important than price. “Service is our number one priority,” he states. “Since we don’t advertise, the lifeblood of our business is people who refer us to other people.”

Lawrence Flooring & Interiors salespeople work with customers in a straightforward and honest manner. “We don’t promise something we know isn’t going to happen,” says Mr. Goldberg. “Salespeople from some stores will promise anything to get customers to sign something, because they’re on commission.” The salespeople at Lawrence Flooring & Interiors don’t receive commissions; instead, they are salaried and get bonuses based on the store’s collective business. This is one more way Lawrence Flooring & Interiors can ensure a positive shopping experience, says Mr. Goldberg.

When you’re in the market for flooring, devote some time beforehand to research. Check out a company’s reputation and customer service history before you give it your business. If you know other people who have purchased from a company, get their opinions. Were they satisfied? Would they shop there again? Would they recommend the company to their friends and family?

Choose a company whose showroom features a broad selection and a knowledgeable sales staff willing to help you in any way possible. Ask pertinent questions. Find out if the company offers its own delivery and installation.

If you purchase flooring from a company and choose to have its people do the installation, make sure they’re experienced and know exactly what they’re doing. Insist they send someone out first to check the floors. You can’t predict the condition of a floor under existing carpet, for example. In some cases, it can be in pretty bad shape. You want to make sure the installation crew looks for this kind of problem before they install the new carpet or other flooring.

Q: Does the same warranty apply for everything?

A: Our products are covered by each individual manufacturer’s warranty. As far as labor goes, it depends on the job. That’s something we go over very carefully with the customer. If there’s something unusual about a job—if, for example, we have to take out a layer of old floor before we put down a new, vinyl one—we explain to the customer how there are different areas of labor involved.

Q: If I buy flooring from your company, will you insist on installing it?

A: Not at all. It can be installed by anyone you choose.

Q: If I buy flooring someplace else, can you install it for me?

A: Sorry, no. We never install anything that hasn’t been purchased from us.

Q: Can’t I get a better deal shopping by mail order?

A: We don’t think so. Since we buy directly from the factory, we’re able to pass on significant savings to our customers. In addition, we arrange for our own deliveries so we can make sure everything arrives safely. And having our own installers guarantees everything will be done in a professional manner.

Q: Do you ever offer specials?

A: We usually offer specials a couple times a year.

Mike Goldberg: A Foundation for Success

CAMPBELL — As second-generation owner of Lawrence Flooring & Interiors, Mike Goldberg was able to create a successful livelihood by expanding upon the foundation originally laid by his father. “My father, Larry, started this business in 1971,” he says. “As a teenager, I started working for the business during the summer, both on the flooring side as an apprentice with the carpeting crews and on the furniture side as a delivery assistant. Later, while attending UCLA, I worked for a floor covering store, where I was able to utilize and expand my industry knowledge and experience.”

After finishing college, Mike remained in Los Angeles and started working for a large flooring store. However, it wasn’t long before the call of opportunity drew him homeward. “My father’s business was growing, and he asked if I’d be interested in coming back and working at the store,” he recounts. “It took a little convincing, but I decided it was worth a shot and packed my bags. More than 30 years later, I’m still here.”

Today, Mike says his favorite part of his job is staying at the forefront of his professional field. “As new products come out, they require different forms of installation, so the industry is in a constant state of development. It’s challenging to keep up, but it also keeps things fun and interesting.” Mike also takes pride in being part of Lawrence Flooring & Interiors’ local legacy. “After more than 45 years in business, we’re getting a lot of second-generation customers—people whose parents shopped here when they were growing up. It makes me feel good when someone tells me, ‘We’re so glad you’re still here!’”

Originally from Campbell, Mike resides today in Los Gatos with his wife, Kristine, where he appreciates the cutting-edge character of the Silicon Valley. “It’s a very exciting place to live,” he affirms. “These days, as the high-tech industry continues to expand, things are moving at a much faster pace than they were 30 years ago, so it keeps me moving along at a pretty good pace to keep up.”

Outside of work, Mike engages in a variety of activities, from fitness training to reading. “I spend a fair amount of my off-time working out, whether it’s cycling, running or lifting weights,” he says. “I’m also a skier, so, weather permitting, I like to hit the slopes when I can. At home, I enjoy sitting on our deck and reading a good book, as well as playing with our dog, Sarah. Over the years, we’ve gotten our dogs from the local animal shelter, which I’ve found to be very rewarding.”

Mike also likes keeping up with his and Kristine’s two grown children, both of whom are following their own respective career paths. “My daughter is currently attending the University of San Francisco, where she is in the Nursing School with plans to pursue her Doctorate as a Nurse Practitioner,” he says. “My son is majoring in aerospace engineering at Cal Poly. During the summers, he comes home and works in our warehouse, which is a big help and a lot of fun.”

In his life and career, Mike espouses the importance of maintaining good relationships. “In addition to hard work, healthy relationships are critical in business,” he explains. “This includes relationships with your fellow employees, vendors and subcontractors as well as your customers. All of these are very important to us, and I think that’s a big part of why we’re pushing 50 years in business.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Mike says he’d do some traveling. “I’ve been fortunate to do a fair amount of traveling in my life, but there are still a lot of places I’d like to see. I also look forward to watching my children pursue their own careers. They’re great kids—they work hard and care about people, and I can’t wait to see how their futures unfold.”

A: “Freakonomics” by Stephen J. Dubner and Steven Levitt. It’s a fascinating book that explores the wide-ranging impact of past economic events.

  • Hardwood Floor Acclimation

    CAMPBELL — When planning to install a hardwood floor, an important aspect of the process to be aware of is the acclimation period. This typically begins seven days prior to installation, at which time your flooring supplier will deliver the product to your home. This advance introduction to the home environment gives the moisture in the wood a chance to acclimate, or “warm up,” to the new climate conditions. Since hardwood products are typically stored in very cold environments, the acclimation period is imperative to avoid future cracking or separation, squeaking, and other issues.

    During the acclimation period, your home’s temperature should be kept at a steady 68 to 75 degrees to ensure thorough acclimation. Prior to installation, the wood should be checked by the installer to make sure it has fully adapted to your home’s climate.
