Comparative Summary

Knights’ Electric, Inc. is a full-service electrical contractor that’s been serving Sonoma, Marin, Napa, Mendocino, and Lake Counties since 1976. Owned by Barbara Ragsdale and her two brothers, Art and Rob Knight, the company offers residential design/build services focused on home energy management, automated home lighting and audio/visual systems. The firm’s commercial services include new construction, remodeling and retrofit projects for industrial plants, retailers and wineries. It also offers maintenance, repair and protection for customers’ electrical power service systems.

Ms. Ragsdale says Knights’ Electric’s success is the result of its customer service approach. “When customers first call us, they don’t get a voicemail system; they get a person who’ll either talk them through a problem or determine which of our experts can take care of their needs.” The company also helps customers project for future needs. “We can often save our clients money by designing systems that can be upgraded without major retrofits.”

Knights’ Electric’s technicians have been with the firm for an average of 12 years. “We’re very proud of our workmanship,” says Ms. Ragsdale. “We’re careful to make sure all our electricians and project managers are up-to-date on building codes so everything we install is safe for our customers.

“Our staff members are the ones who save customers money in the field,” she continues. “Often, things change after the initial assessment and plan, and our technicians have the ability to make suggestions that save money and maintain safety.”

Industry Info

Excellent customer service is an important aspect to look for in an electrician. Barbara Ragsdale, president of Knights’ Electric, Inc. in Windsor, advises to find and stick with a firm that has the personnel to immediately staff a job, provides ongoing maintenance and cares about doing the job right. “It’s also important that the individual electricians are certified by the state of California and that the work is up to code.”

Handymen and general or unlicensed contractors are simply not qualified to do electrical work. “There are a lot of electrical installations that aren’t up to code,” says Ms. Ragsdale. “That’s a situation that can be dangerous to people and property.” Most people either don’t know or forget how dangerous electricity can be. When installed and maintained properly, electrical equipment is very safe, but substandard work can be very hazardous.

Ms. Ragsdale says being bonded isn’t an important condition in selecting a contractor. All licensed electricians in California are bonded, she says, and a bond doesn’t guarantee the work will be done properly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When do I need to consult an electrician about maintaining or upgrading my home’s electrical system?

A: There are several indicators:• You’re resetting circuit breakers or changing fuses too often • The lights dim when you turn on your air conditioner • The lights continually flicker or go on and off • You smell electricity burning • Your outlets are overburdened by multi-plug strips • You’re using two-pronged adapters with your three-pronged plugs • You routinely use extension cords

Q: What will an electrical upgrade cost?

A: We can give you our hourly rates for particular services over the phone. Unlike a lot of electrical contractors, we don’t charge based on a nationally-derived figure, such as a price per outlet installed. We’ve found customers prefer to pay for time and materials.

Q: My power is out. What should I do?

A: If the whole house is out, check with a neighbor to see if they’re experiencing the same problem. Then call the utility company to see if it’s a general problem and if they can send someone out. Those are the least expensive options. If you still have a problem, call us and we’ll dispatch an electrician to find the cause.

Q: Is all electrical work dangerous?

A: Any type of electrical work carries a risk of injury, death or fire. Inexperienced people should never attempt any electrical wiring or installations. All electrical work should be done by an insured, licensed electrician.

Q: Will my work require a permit?

A: Most household service work doesn’t, but major projects such as room additions and basement finishing require permits and inspections. Failure to follow building and electrical codes could require your work to be completely redone at additional expense, so it’s important to get the job done right from the start.

Q: Will I be without power when you’re working?

A: Not always. We try to limit power interruptions to a single circuit and only for a limited period. Major projects may require total shut-offs while service connections are being done. In any event, we’ll minimize the time for which you’re without power.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Barbara Ragsdale

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Barbara Ragsdale is a 40-year veteran of the electrical industry and president of Knights’ Electric, Inc., a Diamond Certified company since 2002. She can be reached at (707) 726-2909 or by email.

Barbara Ragsdale: Growing into Success

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

WINDSOR — When asked how she became president of one of the North Bay’s premier electrical companies, Barbara Ragsdale describes it as an organic progression. “My parents started Knights’ Electric, Inc. in 1976, and I guess you could say I kind of grew into it,” she says. “I started by picking up materials at the wholesale house in Santa Rosa after school and driving them back to the shop in Windsor.” Following high school, Barbara served as secretary-treasurer for the company until 2006, when she took over ownership from her father, Bob Knight.

Today, Barbara says one thing she continues to enjoy is working alongside her family. “I’ve been working here with my two brothers, Rob and Art, since the beginning. After nearly four decades, we now have a third generation working for us, including Rob’s two sons and my own daughter, Liz. In addition, we have longtime employees whose children have grown up and become part of our team. Overall, it’s just a very family-oriented environment, which makes it a fun place to work.”

A lifetime resident of Sonoma County, Barbara was born in Healdsburg and currently resides in Windsor with her husband, Michael. In addition to the region’s natural beauty, she enjoys the abundance of fun things to do. “Windsor has a lot to offer, from great local restaurants to farmers’ markets and live music at the Town Green. We’re also just a short drive from Healdsburg and Santa Rosa, so it’s really an ideal spot.”

Outside of work, Barbara engages in a variety of creative hobbies that include knitting, baking and various home improvement projects. While she likes being at home, she says she appreciates the outdoors as well. “We like to ride our scooters to the Town Green, as well as take camping trips to areas like Hendy Woods and Van Damme State Park.” Barbara also enjoys assisting her husband with recreational beekeeping and keeping up with her son, Zach, who is currently serving in the U.S. Navy.

Barbara also stays actively involved in her community, both in a professional and personal capacity. In addition to having previously served as president of the Redwood Empire Independent Electrical Contractors and the Windsor Boys & Girls Club, in 2009, Barbara became the second female ever to serve as president of the North Coast Builders Exchange.

When asked what her future retirement might look like, Barbara says she’d spend more time pursuing some her favorite hobbies. “I think I’d be more creative. I do a lot of tinkering around now with various projects, but if I had the time, I’d do them with a little more gusto. Who knows, maybe I’d actually get some of them done!”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: I’d like to see the British Isles.

Q: Are you a dog person or a cat person?
A: Definitely a dog person. My dog, Coco, comes to work with me every day.

Q: Do you have a favorite Bay Area winery?
A: Dutcher Crossing Winery in Healdsburg.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?
A: Bake, read and knit.

Q: What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?
A: My children.

Q: What’s your favorite dessert?
A: Anything chocolate.

  • The Benefits of LED Lighting

WINDSOR — If you’re still using incandescent bulbs to light your home, it’s a good time to consider the benefits of LED lighting, as it represents a more cost-effective and energy-efficient option. While they’re more expensive outright, LEDs offer far greater value due to their extensive lifespan. Compared to an incandescent bulb’s average lifespan of 2,000 hours, an LED bulb can last up to 60,000 hours—roughly 30 times longer. With typical usage, you may not have to change an LED bulb for up to 25 years.

In addition to cost-effectiveness, LED lighting is extremely energy-efficient. Unlike incandescent bulbs, which expend a lot of energy on heat, LED lighting devotes all its energy to creating light. Not only does this make LED a far more sustainable light source, but the reduced energy usage also means lower electricity costs for your household.

While LEDs are available in retrofitted form (which enables them to fit into incandescent lighting fixtures), they work best in specialized fixtures, which is why many homeowners are having theirs converted. As incandescent lighting is rapidly becoming superseded by LED technology, converting your home’s light fixtures is a smart long-term investment.
