Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for flooring companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Just Remnants, the key to keeping its customer base happy is simple: provide top-notch service that’s faster and more affordable than most alternatives.  “Since we maintain a larger stock than most flooring dealers, we’re able to start jobs in a timelier manner—usually within a couple of days of ordering,” says co-owner Fred Wozniak. “We’re also able to get our products at a lower cost, which allows us to offer more competitive prices.”

Just Remnants has been providing carpet, hardwood, laminate, and luxury vinyl tile flooring products at two showrooms in San Rafael and Santa Rosa since 1991. In addition to helping customers find floor coverings that meet their specific needs, the company has the in-house capabilities to install flooring for residential and commercial clients in Marin, Sonoma, San Francisco, Alameda, and Contra Costa Counties.

Unlike flooring companies whose owners delegate project management responsibilities to less experienced employees, Just Remnants provides every job with the hands-on expertise of Mr. Wozniak and co-owner Rick Stein. “Rick and I are as hands-on as it gets,” affirms Mr. Wozniak. “We stay involved in daily operations and regularly visit jobsites to make sure things are running properly. We’ve never grown to the point where we’ve lost touch with that part of the business.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Just Remnants is its ability to offer its clients a high level of customization. “Because we work closely with carpet suppliers and their designers, we’re able to do custom work for surprisingly reasonable prices,” says Mr. Wozniak. “We work with all sizes, textures and colors to create products that meet our clients’ exact specifications.”

Industry Info

Caring for and maintaining your floor is important for its appearance and longevity.

As a homeowner, you have the option of choosing from numerous styles of floor coverings, each with its own unique features and advantages. However, it’s important to remember that no matter what floor covering you choose, they all have one thing in common: regular care and maintenance extends their lifespans and improves their overall aesthetics. Consider the following tips for taking care of three of the most popular types of flooring:

Carpet

  • Immediately after the installation, you may notice some shedding. This is a common occurrence with new carpet, and the loose fibers can be easily removed with regular vacuuming. The condition should diminish after a few weeks or months, depending on vacuum frequency. If the carpet shows snags or sprouts, clip them with scissors—don’t pull them.
  • Try to vacuum high-traffic areas two or three times a week and other areas once a week.
  • Move heavy furniture occasionally to avoid excessive pile crushing.
  • Avoid prolonged periods of direct sunlight.

Hardwood

  • Never use abrasive cleaners, scouring powder or steel wool to clean a wood floor.
  • Never wet-mop a wood floor. Standing water can dull the finish, damage the wood and leave a discoloring residue.
  • Always make sure furniture legs have large surface, non-staining floor protectors. When moving a heavy piece of furniture, completely pick it up and carry it to its new location.
  • Regular dust mopping or vacuuming is an essential part of wood floor care. A high-quality dust mop or vacuum head is the most effective tool for cleaning dust and dirt off the floor.

Vinyl

  • Keep traffic light during the first 24 hours after installation so the adhesive can dry properly. If the floor has been seamed, avoid stepping on the seam sealer for 24 hours so it can dry undisturbed.
  • Avoid scrubbing or washing the floor for at least three days after the installation. Spot clean the floor but avoid all seams.
  • Always move heavy furniture and appliances with care to avoid gouging or tearing the floor.
  • Don’t use a vacuum with a beater brush—it may damage the floor’s surface.

Rick Stein: A Flooring Focus

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN RAFAEL — Having come from a multifaceted professional background, Rick Stein established his long-term livelihood by focusing on one particular aspect. “When I was younger, I worked for my family’s business, which handled design, supply and installation for hotel renovations,” he recounts. “I always felt drawn to the flooring aspect—I enjoyed the creativity and problem-solving it involved. Eventually, I decided to pursue a career in the flooring industry and opened Just Remnants in 1991. I was able to utilize my prior experience to get commercial contracts, but I also brought in a residential component. Today, we continue to provide for the flooring needs of residential and commercial clients alike.”

Today, as co-owner of Just Remnants, Rick says his favorite part of his job is making customers happy. “I love seeing the finished product, but most of all I enjoy pleasing my customers. Every time we get a good review from a happy customer, it feels very gratifying to know we’re doing things right.”

A resident of Richmond (where he lives with his wife, Olga), Rick spends his time outside of work on a variety of active pastimes. “I enjoy Latin dance, practicing Qigong [a Chinese martial art similar to Tai chi], swimming and watching baseball,” he details. “I also like to read and take it easy—anything that balances out the intensity of work.”

In regard to a professional philosophy, Rick says real customer service goes beyond mere politeness. “For me, taking care of customers means not only listening to them and treating them fairly, but also coming up with solutions for their problems. After all, you may treat your clients with politeness and respect, but if you can’t offer them practical solutions regarding design or installation, what’s the point? That’s why we always go the extra mile to make sure our customers get exactly what they’re looking for.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Rick says he’d sleep in. “As a flooring contractor, my workday starts pretty early in the morning. After so many years of getting up early, it would be a real joy to sleep in for a change.”

  • Considerations for Hard Surface Flooring

Hard surface flooring is an increasingly popular segment of the flooring industry, with more and more homeowners choosing products like prefinished hardwood and vinyl plank. However, when considering this style of flooring, it’s important to assess specific conditions in your home—otherwise, you may run into problems following installation.

One important thing to look at is the condition of the subfloor. More so than carpet, hard surface flooring requires a fairly level subfloor, so this needs to be assessed prior to installation. Another key consideration is moisture. Excessive humidity levels and other moisture-related issues in the home can have negative long-term effects on hard surface flooring.

These kinds of details should be assessed during the estimating phase of your flooring project—that way, you can avoid putting in a product that isn’t fit for the conditions in your home. This is why it’s crucial to work with an experienced flooring installer. By taking the time to assess your home and identify potential issues, a quality installer can help you choose a flooring product that will perform optimally in your home.

SAN RAFAEL — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re planning to install a hard surface flooring product in your home, there are some important factors you’ll need to consider beforehand. Today we’re in San Rafael with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Rick Stein of Just Remnants to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Rick Stein: Hard surface flooring has really become a big segment of the flooring industry and at Just Carpets, we’re selling a lot of prefinished hardwood and a lot of vinyl plank flooring. It’s important when installing and estimating vinyl plank flooring that you take moisture conditions and also subfloor conditions into consideration. Both of those situations have to be estimated thoroughly to properly prepare for a final installation. That is a very important situation and highly recommended.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Fred Wozniak

Fred Wozniak: Return to Flooring

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN RAFAEL — After retiring from his job as a software specialist, Fred Wozniak decided to return to the industry where he’d originally worked as a young man. “My first job as a teenager was for a company called Tile Town in Detroit, Michigan,” he remembers. “I worked there doing installation for about six years before transitioning into the software industry, where I worked for IBM and then started my own company. I retired in the early ’90s, but I still needed something to do, so I decided to get another job. I saw an ad for a position with a flooring company called Just Remnants, and based on my prior experience, I figured, ‘Why not return to the flooring business?’ That was in 1994—25 years later, I’m still here.”

Today, as co-owner of Just Remnants, Fred says his favorite part of his job is interacting with customers. “I keep my office in the store so I can be close to the sales floor and stay involved with the day-to-day operations. I enjoy talking to customers and helping them find the right flooring products for their homes.”

A resident of Marin County (where he lives with wife, Linda), Fred spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “I like watching NFL football, attending performances at the San Francisco Opera House and going for walks by the bay,” he details. “I also enjoy spending time with my children and grandchildren. The grandkids live on the East Coast, but I still manage to see them every couple of months. In fact, my grandson just spent the summer interning at one of our stores.”

In his life and career, Fred espouses a two-fold philosophy. “During my time working for IBM, I learned the importance of two values: excellence and respect for the individual,” he explains. “Excellence is pretty straightforward: whatever you’re doing, always try to do the very best you can. Respect for the individual pertains not only to one’s clients, but also to one’s employees. At Just Remnants, we have roughly 15 employees and we work very hard to make sure they feel respected and properly treated. I think that goes a long way toward creating a positive work environment and ensuring the satisfaction of our customers.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite football team?

A: The San Francisco 49ers.

Q: What’s your favorite restaurant?

A: Poggio Trattoria in Sausalito.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

A: Russia.

Q: What’s your favorite opera?

A: It’s a tie between “La bohème” and “La traviata.”

Q: Do you collect anything?

A: I collect African art.

  • Caring for Wool Carpet

SAN RAFAEL — Wool carpet is a popular flooring option, and it’s no surprise why—it looks absolutely beautiful when properly maintained. But what does proper maintenance involve? Here are a few guidelines:

    •  When vacuuming a wool carpet, it’s important to set your vacuum cleaner’s beater bar at the proper level. This isn’t as simple as you might think. On one hand, the beater bar should just barely touch the carpet to avoid damage; on the other hand, it needs to touch the carpet at least a little in order to effectively remove the pills (small, fuzzy balls formed by entangled fibers) that naturally form on wool carpeting. Once you determine the proper beater bar level, you shouldn’t need to make any further adjustments.

    •  Prevent stains on your wool carpet by properly treating spills. Always use an industry-approved stain removal product, and remember to blot (not rub) the affected area. You may also be surprised by how well a little water and some bleach-free dishwashing liquid work at removing fresh stains.

    •  Like any type of carpet, wool carpeting should be professionally cleaned on a recurrent basis. Plan to have yours cleaned at least twice a year to keep it looking and performing its best.

    Complete Video Transcription:

SAN RAFAEL — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re planning to install wool carpeting in your home, you’ll need to know a few particulars regarding maintenance. Today we’re in San Rafael with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Fred Wozniak of Just Remnants to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Fred Wozniak: A major part of what we sell are wool carpets. Wool carpets look absolutely beautiful if they are properly maintained. Proper maintenance of wool carpets means that the beater bar from the vacuum cleaner should barely touch the wool carpet. It’s necessary that it touch the wool carpet in order to remove the pills which are natural to the wool carpet. In addition to that, for maximum performance and to keep them looking really good, they should be cleaned at least twice a year. Hope you enjoy your wool carpet.
