Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for home theater and automation companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For InVision Home Theater, the key to keeping clients happy is simple: give them exactly what they need without trying to oversell them. “We’re straight shooters—we look at each customer’s situation and provide them with equipment that fulfills their specific needs,” says President Ted Liu. “Being honest is very important to us. If we look at a home and determine that the system the client wants isn’t ideal, we’ll recommend something else that would be a better fit.”

InVision Home Theater has been designing and installing home entertainment and automation systems for residential and commercial clients in Contra Costa County since 2014. The company offers everything from home theaters to video surveillance systems, and customers can visit its showroom in Walnut Creek to get a firsthand look at the numerous products it carries.

Unlike less experienced home theater companies that only handle certain aspects of their customers’ projects, InVision Home Theater draws upon Mr. Liu’s expertise in built-in audio/visual systems to offer its clients a full-service experience. “I started my career as a general contractor and built a lot of spec homes, and every time I would pre-wire a home, I would consider the network and audio/visual components,” he explains. “People who bought my homes were very appreciative of that touch, which showed me there was a business niche that wasn’t really being addressed. That’s when I turned my attention to helping people attain their audio/visual and networking goals, and we continue that focus on every project.”

InVision Home Theater further differentiates itself from its competition by providing comprehensive after-sale support, including 24/7 tech support via an independent platform called Parasol. “[It] can troubleshoot our clients’ systems remotely,” says Mr. Liu. “Any time they have a technology issue, they can contact Parasol via phone, email or text and it’ll be resolved. We include this service at no charge with our warranty for a set amount of time after an installation, and we also offer it as a subscription service afterward for any customer who wants it.”

Industry Info

Before starting a remodeling project, don’t forget to consider home automation, audio/visual and networking systems.

Few parts of home ownership are more frustrating than having regrets after a remodeling or construction project, but experts have found that’s fairly common when it comes to aspects of the project that make life easier. “The number one issue we run into is homeowners calling us too late,” says Ted Liu, president of InVision Home Theater in Walnut Creek. “Most of them have remodeling budgets, but those budgets usually don’t include things like home automation, Wi-Fi networks and audio/visual systems. When those aspects are afterthoughts, they can be financially unfeasible because they weren’t in the original budget.”

So, how can you protect yourself from additional expenses and frustration? Get an audio/visual specialist on board before construction gets underway. “You should call an audio/video contractor during the planning phase so they can integrate home automation and theater components into your budget and design from the beginning,” affirms Mr. Liu. “That way, the contractor can engage with your architect and designer to make sure the audio/visual components are installed in a cohesive way.”

Mr. Liu says any good audio/visual contractor’s main objectives should be to save their customers from stress and prevent them from wasting money. “If you do it correctly from the beginning, you won’t have to open up walls or pay for repairs. Plus, you’ll get a better system. There are some things that can’t be done after the fact. They have to be done before the walls go up or there’s just no way to do them.”

Not sure if these types of extras will fit in your budget? Mr. Liu says home automation, audio/visual components, networking, and other features are integral parts of construction jobs for every budget and lifestyle. “Home automation isn’t just for rich people anymore—it’s for everyone.”

Ted Liu: A High-Definition Career

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

CONCORD — Ted Liu’s involvement in the home theater and automation field started as a personal hobby but gradually developed into a full-time profession. “Several years ago, I installed an A/V system in my home,” he recounts. “I wanted the nicest system I could afford, and over time I continued to make it bigger and better. Friends and family started asking me to help them install similar systems in their homes. Before I knew it, I was going into business as an A/V contractor.”

Today, as owner of InVision Home Theater, Ted says his prior experience as a general contractor comes in handy with his latter-day career. “Because of my background, I know what’s inside walls, in attics and underneath houses, which helps me plan appropriately for hardwiring systems.” His favorite part of his job? “Making my customers happy,” he replies. “I love handing a customer the remote to their newly finished system and seeing the joy on their face.”

A resident of Alamo (where he lives with his wife, Ellen, and their two children), Ted likes to get out and about in his free time. “I enjoy hiking in the Marin Headlands and going fishing with friends,” he details. “I also like to watch movies on my personal home theater system and take my family on weekend trips to places like Napa and Tahoe.”

In regard to a professional philosophy, Ted espouses the importance of a good reputation. “Reputation is critical for any business, so naturally I want each of our customers to be happy with the work that we do,” he affirms. “If there’s ever an issue with a customer or a project, I make sure we resolve it. By being proactive about customer satisfaction, we’re able to maintain our stellar reputation and gain a loyal clientele.”

  • How to Fix Spotty Wi-Fi in Your Home

CONCORD — If you own a large home, you’ve probably experienced issues with spotty Wi-Fi. This isn’t surprising: a standard Wi-Fi gateway is really designed for a small apartment, so it’s just not capable of providing a strong signal throughout a 2,000-square-foot home. Fortunately, with a few modifications, your Wi-Fi problems can be permanently resolved.

In order to get reliable Wi-Fi coverage in a large home, the signal produced by the gateway needs to be extended. This is done by installing various extension points or “nodes” throughout the home. These nodes can either be wireless or hardwired to the originating source.

While installing wireless nodes is certainly the easier option, the results tend to be less reliable. The problem is that the further the signal travels from the hardwired source, the more it degrades. This can lead to dissatisfactory performance, especially if you do a lot of high-definition audio or video streaming.

A better choice is to install extension nodes that are hardwired back to the signal’s originating source. By producing equivalent signal strength from both the gateway and its extensions, this approach provides seamless, reliable Wi-Fi coverage throughout the home. Just keep in mind that, due to the more intensive installation measures required, it’s important to hire an experienced A/V contractor to perform this job for you.

  • Installing an Outdoor Sound System

CONCORD —An outdoor sound system is a great way to enhance your enjoyment of your outdoor living space. However, to achieve an optimal effect, your system will need to be designed and installed using the right approach. Some homeowners think they can simply aim a couple of large speakers at their recreation area, but this can result in a lot of sound bleed into neighboring properties. If you’re sensitive to that, you won’t be able to comfortably play your music at the volume you’d like to; if you’re not sensitive to that, you may start getting complaints from your neighbors!

A better approach for an outdoor sound system is to place small satellite speakers throughout your recreation area. By providing a more precise, targeted distribution of sound throughout the area, this approach will allow you to enjoy music at the desired volume without disturbing your neighbors. For optimal results, hire a professional A/V contractor to design and install your outdoor sound system.

  • Video: Designing an Outdoor Sound System

    Complete Video Transcription:

CONCORD — Host, Sarah Rutan: When it comes to outdoor sound systems, proper design is crucial for ensuring satisfaction with the final product. Today we’re in Concord with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Ted Liu of InVision Home Theater to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Ted Liu: When thinking about an outdoor sound system, we want to avoid the shotgun approach, which is putting a couple of speakers on a house and aiming those speakers toward the recreation areas because the problem with that approach is you have a lot of sound bleed going towards your neighbors and, so, you become sensitive to that and you really can’t play it at the volumes you want to enjoy. So, the better approach is to go with a landscape sound system where there are small satellite speakers placed throughout the backyard, throughout your recreation areas outdoors, where we can get music precisely where we need it without it being aimed toward neighboring properties and also, you will have better control of volume to your liking.

  • Video: Advice for an A/V Project

    Complete Video Transcription:

CONCORD — Host, Sarah Rutan: When planning to install a high-end A/V system, your first step should be finding the right contractor. Today we’re in Concord with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Ted Liu of InVision Home Theater to learn why.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Ted Liu: The best piece of advice I can give homeowners who are embarking on a project to either to a remodel or new construction is to involve an AV contractor early in the process, much as you would with your interior designer or any other consultants you may have because by doing so, not only do you include all the audio, video, surveillance, even lighting and shade control, into the budget early on, you also get to ensure that the end result and the system that you end up with is going to be optimal for your needs.

  • Video: How to Improve Wi-Fi in Your Home

    Complete Video Transcription:

CONCORD— Host, Sarah Rutan:Few things are more frustrating than spotty Wi-Fi coverage in your home. Today we’re in Concord with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Ted Liu of InVision Home Theater to learn how this problem can be avoided.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Ted Liu: As we all know, a good strong WIFI system throughout the house is essential for every home and my biggest advice around that is call a professional to come in and give you an assessment and wire up the house appropriately. The systems that the cable or the phone companies provide are really not designed to cover a house bigger than 1500 square feet and certainly not the outdoors. So, by having a professional come in to bring hard wire to disparate points in the house, as well as to the outdoors, you can assure yourself once your AV system’s done or your house is done being constructed, that you’ll have good solid WIFI throughout the home without any dead spots.
