Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for landscape contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Inscapes, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: apply its artistic craftsmanship to every job, regardless of its size. “We really enjoy the artistic challenges that come up in this line of work,” affirms owner Alain Joske. “Our goal is to maximize both the functional and aesthetic aspects of our customers’ landscapes, which they really appreciate.”

Inscapes has been providing landscaping services for residential clients in Sonoma, Marin and Napa Counties for more than 30 years. The company has the training and equipment to handle every step of its customers’ landscaping projects, from excavation and grading to irrigation and planting, and it’s also qualified to install special features like fountains and waterfalls, outdoor kitchens, low-voltage outdoor lighting, and more.

Unlike landscape contractors whose owners delegate project management responsibilities to less experienced employees, Inscapes provides every job with the hands-on expertise of Mr. Joske himself. “By consistently being onsite and working alongside my employees, I’m able to maintain a higher level of quality,” he explains. “I also believe communication is very important, so I make myself fully available to our clients so I can personally address any questions or concerns they have.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Inscapes is its conscientious approach to landscaping work, which includes providing detailed written contracts and prioritizing jobsite cleanliness. “We treat our customers’ properties as if they were our own,” says Mr. Joske. “We know people don’t want to come home and see a big mess in their yards, so we make sure everything is put away and tidy at the end of every workday. Our customers really appreciate how focused we are on cleaning up after ourselves.”

Industry Info

If you’re planning to install a water feature in your yard, make sure you’ve made all the necessary considerations. Large yards and properties often benefit from the addition of fish ponds, waterfalls and other water features, but when it comes to designing and installing these structures, it’s important to remember that there are several preliminary aspects to consider. Here are a few:

Location
A crucial consideration when planning for a water feature is finding the right site in your yard, which can be more complicated than it seems. First, you need to make sure the site is of adequate size for the desired installation. In most cases, water features require water pumps to draw from, the size of which tends to increase in proportion to the size of the installation. That’s why it’s important to make sure the location you choose provides adequate space for all necessary elements.

In addition to space concerns, you need to make sure your water feature is aesthetically appropriate for its environment. “You have to design the feature to fit the site,” confirms Alain Joske, owner of Inscapes in Rohnert Park. “If the installation doesn’t blend into the landscape as a whole, it’s going to look out of place. In some cases, you may need to alter additional elements of your existing landscape.”

Noise
Some water features can be louder than anticipated, which is why it’s important to determine the level of noise you’re comfortable with before work begins. “Some people want the Sierra Nevada effect in their yards, with huge boulders and cascading waterfalls, while others prefer a more serene, meditative environment where you can barely hear the water trickling,” says Mr. Joske. “Either way, it’s crucial for you to know what kind of environment you’re trying to create.”

Wildlife
While you may want to install a water feature for your personal enjoyment, other parties are liable to benefit from it as well—namely the local wildlife. “If you live in a woodland area, for example, a water feature is likely to attract several critters,” says Mr. Joske. “Fish ponds, for example, can lure hungry raccoons and birds, so it’s important to take measures to protect your fish. Otherwise, you’re going to spend a lot of money just to provide a buffet for predators. Your pond should be at least two feet deep and provide areas for the fish to hide. You may need to put up bird netting as well.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long will it take to complete my landscaping project?

A: It depends on the size and scope of your project. Most of our jobs take about a month or less to complete, but larger projects can take up to three or four months. Regardless, we’ll provide a timeline estimate before any work begins so you have a better idea of when your project will be finished.

Q: How many people will be working on my job?

A: Most jobs have three or four people, but it can vary depending on the size and scope of your project.

Q: Can I make changes in the middle of my project?

Q: Do you provide tree maintenance services?

A: No, but we can install new trees in your existing landscape.

Q: Do you design landscapes?

A: If you want a custom design, we can collaborate with an outside designer or architect, but we don’t offer those services in-house.

Alain Joske: Second Nature

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

ROHNERT PARK — Like many professionals who follow in a parent’s footsteps, Alain Joske found success by taking up the trade of his father. “My father was a landscape architect, so I’ve pretty much been involved in it all my life, to the point where it basically became second nature.” While he briefly considered an alternate career path in college, Alain’s inherited love of the outdoors won out in the end. “I was a computer science major, but I was still doing landscaping on the side,” he remembers. “One beautiful spring day, I was sitting inside writing code when I looked out the window and thought, ‘I’d rather be working outside right now.’ It was then I realized that I wanted to continue doing landscaping as a full-time career.”

Today, as owner of Inscapes, Alain says he enjoys taking on projects that spark his creative ingenuity. “I really enjoy the creative aspects of this business, especially when it comes to complex projects like water features and parkscapes. When I’m able to get a little artistic with a project, that’s when things get fun.”

A lifelong resident of the Bay Area, Alain resides in Rohnert Park with his wife, Gina, and their daughters, Taylor and Ryley. In addition to the versatile horticultural possibilities afforded by the temperate Bay Area climate, he says he appreciates the region’s topographical diversity. “What I like most about the Bay Area is there are so many different things to do in a small area. There are lots of great places to go hiking, the ocean is an hour away and the snow is just a few hours in the opposite direction. It’s just a beautiful area and I’m happy to be here.”

Outside of work, Alain enjoys a variety of pastimes, including playing softball and boating. “My family did a lot of boating when I was a kid, so, like landscaping, it’s kind of second nature to me. I have a ski boat and enjoy taking the family out for a day on Lake Mendocino.” Alain says he also likes attending social gatherings and live music events.

In his life and career, Alain espouses the significance of personal integrity. “My father always told me that personal integrity is of the utmost importance, which is something that has always stuck with me,” he says. “Having strong ethics, performing quality work, treating customers fairly and honestly—these are all big things for me, which I think is a direct reflection of the value I place on integrity.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Alain says he’d take a family vacation. “It wouldn’t really matter where—as long as I have my family around me, it’s all good.”

Ask Me Anything!

  • The Key to Effective Landscape Watering

ROHNERT PARK — When it comes to landscape irrigation, a common misconception is that plants need to be watered on a daily basis. In reality, by adopting strategic water-wise methods, you can easily reduce the frequency of your landscape watering to three or fewer times a week.

The key to effective watering is to water less often but for longer durations of time. Many people make a habit of watering every day for a few minutes, but with this method, very little of that water gets past the surface soil. In contrast, two or three thorough soakings each week will have a much greater impact by allowing the water to penetrate the soil and reach your plants’ root zones. Additionally, since this strategy uses less water in the long term, you’ll be able to reduce your monthly water bills.

With lawns, performing a weekly “cycle soak” can also maximize the effectiveness of watering. Here’s how it works: turn on your sprinklers and soak the lawn until the water is about to run off, wait about 30 minutes, and then repeat. This will push the water deep into the root zone, resulting in a watering that will sustain your lawn for days to come.

  • Video: Water Management for your Garden

    Complete Video Transcription:

ROHNERT PARK — Host, Sarah Rutan: In order to maintain a healthy landscape, it’s important to regulate the amount of water your plants receive, Today, we’re in Rohnert Park with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Alain Joske of Inscapes to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Alain Joske: I’d like to talk about the over watering of gardens. People tend to over water their garden all the time. It’s important that you don’t overwater maybe three times a week. For drip systems, that is more than enough, even once a week to twice a week if you are getting enough water into the root zone. It’s important that you water for a long enough time to get down deep in the root zone. The plants will be happier and healthier and they won’t require as much water in the long run.

For lawns for instance, no more than three times a week but you also want to do once a week, what we call a cycle soak. A cycle soak is where you turn the system on; you soak that lawn to the point before you get a bunch of run-off. Wait about thirty minutes and then you do it again. Only do that about once a week. What that will do is push that water down deep into the root zone, make those roots go down deep for it and it will be a happier, healthier lawn in the long run.
