Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for painting companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For House Doctor Painting, Inc., the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction has been the 21-step process it implements on every job, which is designed to ensure all work is performed to the highest possible quality. “Our comprehensive process ensures we pay attention to every detail and go the extra mile for every customer,” says owner Kelly McKinley. “From color consulting and power washing to sanding and priming, we take care of it all.”

House Doctor Painting has been providing interior and exterior painting services for residential and commercial clients throughout the South Bay, Santa Cruz and the Peninsula since 1989. In addition to its general painting and staining capabilities, the company has special expertise with wood restoration and can apply numerous finishes that are designed to seal and preserve wood surfaces.

Unlike painting companies that strive to reduce their operating costs by hiring inexperienced painters and day laborers, House Doctor Painting maintains a team of industry professionals who are thoroughly trained in every aspect of the painting business. “A lot of our painters have been with us for more than 10 years, so they know exactly what it takes to produce results that meet our high standards,” says Mr. McKinley.

Another distinguishing attribute of House Doctor Painting is its proclivity for developing and maintaining long-term relationships with its clients, which Mr. McKinley says has been an important part of the company’s success. “Painting is almost completely referral-based, so we know how important it is to keep our customers satisfied and willing to refer us to their friends and family. When someone likes the paint job we did on their neighbor’s house and asks the neighbor if they were happy with our services, they always say yes.”

Industry Info

Make sure you know how to identify and properly dispose of lead-based paint in your home. Paint manufacturers haven’t used lead in their products for many years, but if your home was built before 1978, it could contain traces of the potentially harmful metal in its surfaces. If the old paint on the interior or exterior of your house is chipped, peeling or cracking—or if it’s on a friction surface (around doors or windows) or impact surface (sills or baseboards)—it can create a serious health hazard, especially for infants and young children. If any of these attributes apply to your paint, you should immediately consult an EPA Lead-Safe Certified painting professional who can properly encapsulate, capture and dispose of the paint.

Some doctors recommend that all children under six years old have their blood tested for lead at least once a year. If the test shows your child’s blood-lead level is higher than normal and you suspect your house’s old paint is the source, it can be beneficial to send a few paint chips to a lead paint testing laboratory for analysis. If the results show significant amounts of lead dust, you’ll have to remove or replace upholstered furniture, rugs and anything else that has come in contact with paint particles inside your home. For safety purposes, removing chipped or peeling paint should be left to a professional.

If your home contains large amounts of lead-based paint that’s in poor condition, abatement may be your only option. Abatement has to be performed by a licensed contractor who’s fully trained in the removal and disposal of lead. This can be very expensive, so if your paint is in good condition, ask your contractor if simpler solutions are available in the interim.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How soon can you start my project?

A: Depending on our schedule, we can usually start your project within one week of the estimate.

Q: Do you require a deposit?

A: No, we collect payment upon completion of the job.

Q: Can you work on weekends?

A: We can work Saturdays, but not Sundays—unless it’s a commercial job that needs to be completed over a weekend.

Q: Do you provide color consultations?

A: Yes. We can help you pick the best combination of colors for the exterior of your home, as well as colors that will match its interior décor.

Q: What kind of paint do you use?

A: We primarily use Kelly-Moore paints, but we’ll use any premium-grade paint that you prefer. We don’t use contractor- or professional-grade paints—they don’t last very long and they tend to fade, peel, and crack.

Q: Do you offer any warranties?

A: We offer a 5-year unconditional warranty that covers all materials and workmanship. If anything goes wrong during that time period, we’ll fix it with no questions asked.
