Stephen Casey: An Unexpected Goal
By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter
SANTA CLARA — As an aspiring soccer player, Stephen Casey had always been agile on his feet, but nothing could have prepared him to follow in his father’s footsteps. “When I was in high school, my goal was to become a professional soccer player,” he explains. “I played one year of junior college, after which I was supposed to transfer to a four-year school, but things just didn’t work out. Instead, I started working for my dad in the termite industry. He’d been in termite control since 1961, so I grew up around it and was familiar with the field. It wasn’t what I envisioned myself doing for a career, but it ended up working out really well.”
Today, as owner of Guardian Termite Inspection Services, Stephen says his favorite part of his job is interacting with people. “Growing up, I watched the way my dad dealt with his customers and saw it as a really positive aspect of the business. Now that I’m running my own company, it’s my favorite part of the job, along with working with my employees. I’ve developed a lot of long-term relationships in this business, and that’s one of the things that keeps me motivated.”
A resident of San Jose (where he lives with his wife, Veronica), Stephen expresses his appreciation for the city’s characteristic diversity. “There’s an amazing amount of diversity in San Jose and the Bay Area in general—so many different things to do, places to go, and food and entertainment to enjoy. Add to that the great weather and it makes for a very enjoyable lifestyle.”
Outside of work, Stephen spends the bulk of his free time on sports- and family-related activities. “I play a bit of golf and enjoy watching sports—I’m a big 49ers fan,” he affirms. “I also like hanging out with my kids and grandkids. Both my daughter, Jasmine, and my son, Joshua, are local. In fact, Joshua works with me, so that’s really nice.” Additionally, Stephen and his wife enjoy occasional getaways to nearby destinations like Pismo Beach.
In regard to a professional philosophy, Stephen espouses the importance of transparency in business. “In addition to operating with honesty and integrity, we go above and beyond to communicate with our customers,” he explains. “For example, we take photos of anything we find during our inspections. That way, our customers can see things like termite damage and dry rot for themselves instead of just taking our word for it.”
When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Stephen doesn’t have a sure answer. “I haven’t thought that far ahead,” he admits. “I would probably spend more time with my family and play a little more golf…just more of the things I already enjoy.”
