Stephen Casey, Owner

Guardian Termite Inspection Services provides a wide range of termite services for residential and commercial clients in San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, and San Benito Counties. The company utilizes a variety of treatments (localized, fumigation, preventive) to eliminate drywood and subterranean termites from properties, and it’s also qualified to repair structural damage caused by termites and wood-destroying fungus.

Owner Stephen Casey says Guardian Termite Inspection Services’ family-owned and operated status has allowed it to develop a loyal clientele base. “My family has been in the termite industry for decades—my dad started in 1961 and I grew up learning from him. Today, my son, Josh, and nephew, Danny, are third-generation termite inspectors. We all enjoy what we do, and that really resonates with our customers.”

Guardian Termite Inspection Services is known for performing meticulous inspections, which Mr. Casey says is the best way to ensure consistent quality. “We provide color photos of items we find during the inspection so there’s no miscommunication, and our estimates are highly accurate because we take the time to make sure nothing is left out. All our inspectors have worked as repair technicians, so they know what it takes to do the job correctly.”

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for termite control companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Guardian Termite Inspection Services, the key to keeping a satisfied customer base is taking a multi-pronged approach to termite control in order to ensure the best possible results. “We’re able to take care of our clients quickly and effectively because we have our own repair department,” explains owner Stephen Casey. “They get a quality inspection, and if there’s any damage to their properties, they also get an estimate for repairs so they can move forward quickly.”

Guardian Termite Inspection Services has been providing termite services for residential and commercial clients in San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, and San Benito Counties since 2013. The family-owned and operated company utilizes localized, fumigation, and preventive treatments to eliminate drywood and subterranean termites from properties, and it also has the training and equipment to repair structural damage caused by termites and wood-destroying fungus.

Unlike less experienced termite companies that undervalue the importance of performing thorough inspections, Guardian Termite Inspection Services makes sure every project starts with a solid inspection that shows the client exactly what’s going on with their home. “We believe detailed inspections are crucial for a successful outcome,” affirms Mr. Casey. “Our written reports even include color photos so there’s no miscommunication as to what we found.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Guardian Termite Inspection Services is its highly skilled inspectors, all of whom draw upon their construction and repair experience to provide accurate bids. “Our inspectors all worked on repair crews before they became inspectors, so they know how to bid jobs correctly,” confirms Mr. Casey. “We know what we’re looking for and understand what it takes to get the job done.”

Industry Info

The best way to avoid termite damage in your home is to get routine inspections.

If you’ve seen them flying around your home, swarming inside or outside, or forming mounds in your yard, you know the visceral reaction termites can elicit. Termites feed on cellulose-based materials like wood, plants, trees, drywall, paper and plastic, which means nearly every house is a candidate for infestation—especially those in temperate climates like California.

Unfortunately, termite damage isn’t always visible, and irreparable harm can be caused to your property by the time there’s tangible evidence of termite infestation. “Most people aren’t educated in the process of termite treatments, so I recommend hiring an experienced termite company before you do anything,” advises Stephen Casey, owner of Guardian Termite Inspection Services in Santa Clara. “Your house is one of the biggest investments you’ll ever make, so why take a chance on someone who doesn’t have termite experience?”

Mr. Casey says the best option is to find a termite company that knows about treatments, repairs, construction and other factors particular to your home. “The biggest thing is to start with a good inspection. If you get a bad inspection, you won’t be able to make the right decisions for treatment, repair and prevention.”

Even homeowners who haven’t had termite problems in the past shouldn’t be complacent. “Living in California, you either have termites or you’re going to get them,” warns Mr. Casey. “The best thing to do is get inspections every two to five years, because you could have thousands of dollars of damage if you neglect to check for termites. That can also cost you if you try to sell your house and it has termite damage.”

Mr. Casey says routine inspections are akin to insurance against termite infestation. “Spending $200 every three years is cheap insurance against large repairs. Even if termites are found, regular inspections usually mean earlier detection, which can simplify the process. If your inspector finds any issues, they can usually treat locally rather than fumigating or drilling holes around the entire home. It’s all about maintenance, but most people don’t think about it until they have a problem.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How quickly can you finish my job?
A: “That depends on the time of year. During our busy season, it usually takes three days until we can do the inspection. During slower times, we can usually get there by the next day. If it’s an emergency, we’ll come as soon as possible. Our turnaround time on reports is typically within 24 hours of the inspection, and we’ll email the report so you get it quicker. As far as work is concerned, it generally takes us three to five days to complete the repairs once you’ve authorized the service.”

Q: Do I need to leave my house while you’re working?
A: “In most cases, you don’t need to leave the house.”

Q: Why do you charge for termite inspections?
A: “We have to do the inspection and produce the report, which takes time. Our goal isn’t to sell you anything—we’re there to explain what’s going on with your home and give you an honest assessment. Some companies that do free inspections send a salesperson who tries to sell extra services, but we focus on giving an honest opinion so you can make a decision on how you want to proceed. If you need repair work or treatments and decide to hire us, we’ll reimburse you for the inspection fee.”

Q: Do you use subcontractors?
A: “We do all of our own repairs and treatments, but we have to use subcontractors for fumigations because we don’t do enough of those to have our own crew. In fact, most companies in Silicon Valley subcontract fumigations for that reason.”

Q: Do you use harmful chemicals?
A: “The chemicals aren’t harmful if they’re used properly, so we make sure to use industry-standard application methods to keep our clients safe.”

Q: What’s the difference between orange oil and chemicals?
A: “Orange oil is a contact kill for termites, which means you have to hit every termite in order to eradicate them. The likelihood of that happening is pretty low because there can be thousands of termites in a colony. Instead, we recommend using chemicals that are proven to be safe and effective.”

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Stephen Casey

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

Stephen Casey: An Unexpected Goal

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SANTA CLARA — As an aspiring soccer player, Stephen Casey had always been agile on his feet, but nothing could have prepared him to follow in his father’s footsteps. “When I was in high school, my goal was to become a professional soccer player,” he explains. “I played one year of junior college, after which I was supposed to transfer to a four-year school, but things just didn’t work out. Instead, I started working for my dad in the termite industry. He’d been in termite control since 1961, so I grew up around it and was familiar with the field. It wasn’t what I envisioned myself doing for a career, but it ended up working out really well.”

Today, as owner of Guardian Termite Inspection Services, Stephen says his favorite part of his job is interacting with people. “Growing up, I watched the way my dad dealt with his customers and saw it as a really positive aspect of the business. Now that I’m running my own company, it’s my favorite part of the job, along with working with my employees. I’ve developed a lot of long-term relationships in this business, and that’s one of the things that keeps me motivated.”

A resident of San Jose (where he lives with his wife, Veronica), Stephen expresses his appreciation for the city’s characteristic diversity. “There’s an amazing amount of diversity in San Jose and the Bay Area in general—so many different things to do, places to go, and food and entertainment to enjoy. Add to that the great weather and it makes for a very enjoyable lifestyle.”

Outside of work, Stephen spends the bulk of his free time on sports- and family-related activities. “I play a bit of golf and enjoy watching sports—I’m a big 49ers fan,” he affirms. “I also like hanging out with my kids and grandkids. Both my daughter, Jasmine, and my son, Joshua, are local. In fact, Joshua works with me, so that’s really nice.” Additionally, Stephen and his wife enjoy occasional getaways to nearby destinations like Pismo Beach.

In regard to a professional philosophy, Stephen espouses the importance of transparency in business. “In addition to operating with honesty and integrity, we go above and beyond to communicate with our customers,” he explains. “For example, we take photos of anything we find during our inspections. That way, our customers can see things like termite damage and dry rot for themselves instead of just taking our word for it.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Stephen doesn’t have a sure answer. “I haven’t thought that far ahead,” he admits. “I would probably spend more time with my family and play a little more golf…just more of the things I already enjoy.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: If you could visit any country in the world, where would you go?
A: Spain. My mom’s side of the family is from there, and I’ve always been interested to learn more about my roots.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to eat for dessert?
A: Tapioca pudding.

Q: Music or talk radio?
A: Talk radio, especially sports talk.

Q: Would you rather live in the city or the country?
A: The city, just because there are so many more activities to do.

Q: If you were a professional athlete, what number would you wear on your jersey?
A: 11—that was my number when I played soccer growing up.

  • The Truth about Alternative Termite Treatments

SANTA CLARA — Today, there are a lot of alternative treatment methods being used for termite eradication. Their popularity is partially due to a growing antipathy toward chemical treatments, driven by concerns about their ramifications for health and the environment. However, there are a lot of misconceptions about the effectiveness of these alternative methods, as well as the dangers of chemical usage.

One example of a popular alternative termite treatment is orange oil, an essential oil that can kill termites on contact. While orange oil may look good on paper, practice tells a different story. First, since orange oil requires direct contact to kill termites, you have to hit every member of the colony for it to be effective. Worse still, orange oil is a repellent that termites purposefully avoid, which can cause them to dig further into your home’s wood while retreating.

Like orange oil, most alternative termite treatments sound great when they come out, but after a few years it becomes apparent that they aren’t as effective as advertised. In contrast, chemical applications like Termidor have proven their effectiveness time and time again. Unlike orange oil, Termidor is a non-repellent treatment—it actually attracts termites, who bring the chemical back to their colonies, where it spreads like a virus and eradicates the infestation at its source.

It’s also important to note that chemical termite treatments aren’t as dangerous as most people think. Today’s manufacturers have engineered products that provide the maximum effect against termites while having a minimum impact on the home, its inhabitants and the outdoor environment. As long as they’re applied correctly, chemical treatments are completely safe. In fact, the active ingredient in Termidor is the same one used in flea collars for dogs!

SANTA CLARA — Host, Sarah Rutan: All termites swarm, but did you know that different species do so in different seasons? Today we’re in Santa Clara with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Stephen Casey of Guardian Termite Inspection Services to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Stephen Casey: If you’re seeing signs of termites swarming, usually subterraneans will swarm from the month of March all the way to the month of June. Then from June all the way until the end of October you’ll see dry wood termite swarming. I think it’s a good think to have an inspection done every two to five years because termites can do thousands and thousands of dollars of damage.
