Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for landscape contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Green Environment Landscape, Inc., the key to keeping clients happy is simple: take the time to ensure they’re satisfied with every aspect of their projects. “Our main goal is to make our clients happy with our work,” affirms President Francisco Cortes. “It’s always rewarding to see the smile on a customer’s face when we show them the final product. That’s what we aim for on each job.”

Green Environment Landscape has been providing landscaping services for residential and commercial clients in Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Monterey, and San Benito Counties since 1987. As a design/build firm, the company is qualified to handle every step of its clients’ projects, from installing fences to building outdoor living products, and it also has special expertise with sustainable, drought-tolerant landscaping techniques.

Unlike landscape contractors whose owners delegate project management responsibilities to less experienced employees, Green Environment Landscape provides every job with the hands-on expertise of Mr. Cortes himself. “I’m fully invested in my clients’ projects,” he says. “I’m in the field every day supervising the work, and I make sure our technicians are using the best possible methods and materials.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Green Environment Landscape is its conscientious approach to water conservation. “We encourage our clients to use water-wise methods like subsurface irrigation, which minimizes loss from run-off, wind and evaporation,” explains Mr. Cortes. “Many property owners don’t realize these methods are just as effective as watering with sprinklers, and they also save water and reduce their utility bills.”

Industry Info

When taking on a landscape construction project, make sure you consider its impact on the environment.
A landscape construction project can enhance the beauty and functionality of your yard, but it’s also important to consider its impact on the environment. Here are a couple of environmental factors to consider:

The water table
Due to the abundance of clay soil and rocky areas, the water table (the subsurface level of the earth that’s saturated with water) tends to be low in Northern California. That’s why it’s wise to consider how your project’s design will impact the water table. For example, covering large areas of your landscape with concrete will promote run-off and allow less water to be absorbed into the soil. In contrast, using permeable paver stones will allow water to trickle down into the earth and recharge the water table. You can also install a French drain, which is a “dry well” filled with rocks that collects groundwater so it can be absorbed by the earth instead of running off into a sewer or stream.

Soil integrity
It’s also important to consider how your landscape construction project will impact the integrity of the local soil. Healthy plants require healthy soil, which is why any landscaping project should begin with testing soil content and amending it as needed. However, some landscape contractors use chemical fertilizers, which can have negative long-term effects on the soil. “Using chemical fertilizers may give your plants an initial boost, but it’s not a good long-term solution,” says Francisco Cortes, president of Green Environment Landscape, Inc. in Watsonville. “Also, continued use of chemical fertilizers can actually damage the soil and deteriorate its natural state. Instead, the soil should be amended with natural ingredients and methods. This isn’t difficult—for instance, to amend nitrogen-deficient soil, you just need to add a few inches of bark. As the bark decomposes, the soil will become more nitrogen-rich.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long will my landscape project take to complete?
A: It depends on a few factors, including the scope of the project and the weather conditions. Rainy weather can cause delays, especially if the soil we’re working on gets saturated, so it’s important to consider the season when planning your project.

Q: Will you work with my designer?
A: Yes, we’re happy to collaborate with your landscape designer to complete your project.

Q: Do you comply with city regulations?
A: Absolutely. Bay Area counties are very particular about how landscape construction projects are designed and carried out. We have plenty of experience with city regulations and we know what’s expected. To date, we’ve never had an issue with a city inspector.

Q: Should I convert my lawn sprinklers to a drip irrigation system?
A: We definitely recommend it. Depending on the size of your property, a sprinkler conversion can be a big job, but the water savings and improved efficiency make it worthwhile. Plus, drip irrigation reduces weeds, mold and plant diseases, so there are a lot of benefits.

Q: How do you know if my soil conditions are right?
A: Before every job, we take a sample of the soil and have it tested at a local lab. This test will tell us if the soil is deficient in any way, which will allow us to address such deficiencies before we proceed with the project.

Francisco Cortes: Always Growing

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

WATSONVILLE — After embarking on a career in landscaping, Francisco Cortes charted a professional path marked by continual growth and development. “Before I got into landscaping, I was working in a warehouse and wanted a job where I could work outside,” he remembers. “A friend suggested becoming a landscaper, and after looking into it, I decided to give it a shot. I really enjoyed landscaping work and decided to take some college courses to learn about landscape design and irrigation. Several years later, I became interested in hardscaping, so I joined the California Landscape Contractors Association so I could learn more about that aspect. Basically, the past 30 years have been a continual process of learning, developing my skills and expanding my company’s capabilities.”

Today, as owner of Green Environment Landscape, Inc., Francisco says his favorite part of his job is hardscaping. “I enjoy hardscaping work because you’re always doing something new and different, which brings a fresh set of challenges. Plus, clients are always excited to see the job progress, so it’s very rewarding when we show them the final product.”

Originally from Guadalajara, Mexico, Francisco immigrated to the United States in the late 1960s and today resides in Santa Cruz County. Outside of work, he maintains an active lifestyle. “I enjoy working out at the gym, going for walks along the beach and singing mariachi music with friends.” Francisco also enjoys spending quality time with his son and two daughters.

When asked about a professional philosophy, Francisco believes in the ethic of continual self-improvement. “My goal with each project is to do better and learn something new,” he explains. “I’m the kind of person who’s never satisfied with the bare minimum—I’m always looking for ways to improve upon things, whether it’s a project I’m working on or just developing my own skills. That’s why I see every new day as a fresh opportunity to learn, grow and become better at what I love to do.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What was your first job?

A: I was a field worker. I picked lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and celery. That’s where I first learned to love working outside.

Q: What’s your favorite season?

A: Summer, because I get to spend more time at the beach.

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?

A: Jalisco Restaurant in Watsonville.

Q: What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?

A: Father’s Day postcards from my kids. They’ve been sending me these postcards for years and I’ve kept them all. I love that I can look at them anytime and they take me back.

Q: What’s your favorite dessert?

A: Carrot cake.

  • 3 Tips to Conserve Water in Your Yard

WATSONVILLE — When it comes to irrigating your yard, small steps and smart practices can go a long way toward conserving water. Consider the following tips:

Water less often for longer intervals. Many people water their lawns and gardens every day, but this actually isn’t the most efficient method. A better strategy is to water less frequently but for longer intervals. For example, instead of watering your lawn for 15 minutes every day, a better method is to water it for 45 minutes two to three times per week. This extended watering interval will soak the area and ensure water permeates deep into the root zone, which will sustain your lawn and plants for a few days until the next watering.

Minimize runoff in sloped areas. When irrigating lawns or plants situated in sloped areas, you can inadvertently waste a lot of water due to runoff. As the soil becomes permeated with water, the excess will run off (typically into a nearby stream or storm drain) instead of going into the ground. That’s why if you irrigate a sloped area for 10 minutes, less than half of that water is likely to make it down to the root zone. To address this, utilize the “soak cycle” method: water the area for five minutes, give it a couple of hours to soak and then water for another five minutes. This method will minimize runoff and ensure most of your water goes where you want.

Recycle your lawn clippings as mulch. In addition to providing the soil with nitrogen and other nutrients, mulch helps conserve water by reducing sun and wind evaporation. Some people spend a lot of money on store-bought mulch products, but ordinary lawn clippings can also serve this purpose. After mowing, simply distribute your clippings over the areas you want to cover—they’ll help conserve water and fertilize your soil at no additional cost to you.

  • Video: 3 Ways to Save Water in Your Yard

    Complete Video Transcription:

WATSONVILLE — Host, Sarah Rutan: When it comes to landscape irrigation, small changes in methodology can add up to significant water savings. Today we’re in Watsonville with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Francisco Cortes of Green Environment Landscape to learn three water-wise tips.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Francisco Cortes: I’m going to give you a tip, how can you save water? Most the lawn mowers, they have a part they sell, you can remove your garbage bag and you can put it right there. And all the clippings for the grasses is going to be into the section grass. That way, when you water it, you’re going to save water, and at the same time the clipping is going to be fertilizer for your lawn. You don’t have to do it every week. You can do it one week, every other week. That way you can absorb part of the clips, and you can leave part of the clips to save water and to use like fertilizer.

Another tip for use, your irrigation and your lawn or shrubs. In the summer time, it’s pretty hot. Probably July, August and September and October is going to be the hottest month. Try to go deeper but infrequently. That’s mean you have to let it – let it run, the irrigation, a little bit longer, but not very often. That way the water can go deeper and the roots get a deeper, so if the roots are deeper it’s going to be stronger and your lawn is going to be healthy, and you – you will satisfied with the results.

Another tip about water to your lawn, if you have a hillside, if you water it twice a night, for example, four minutes the first cycle and two hours later another four minutes, you’re going to avoid the runoff to the storm drainage. If you watered it ten minutes, probably you’re going to waste at least five minutes of water. You’re going to put five minutes of water into the storm drainage. If you want to avoid, just use two cycles during the same night and you will save water.
