Jeremy Carlock, CEO

Got Watts Electric provides a wide range of electrical services for residential and commercial clients throughout Contra Costa County. In addition to repairing and maintaining all types of electrical systems, the company has the training and equipment to install solar electric systems, whole house fans, electric vehicle chargers, and LED lighting; perform panel and service upgrades; handle the electrical wiring for new construction and remodeling projects; and much more.

CEO Jeremy Carlock explains that Got Watts Electric’s ability to troubleshoot complicated electrical problems has been a crucial aspect of its success. “It takes a creative mind to solve electrical issues, and that’s something all of our technicians possess. We enjoy the problem-solving side of electrical work—the solutions aren’t always obvious, so it’s very rewarding when we’re able to fix a problem that a client thought was unsolvable.”

Got Watts Electric offers a 25-year warranty on craftsmanship and a five-year warranty on most parts, which Mr. Carlock says is rarely seen in the electrical industry. “We take a lot of pride in our work, and backing it with comprehensive warranties is another example of that. We also offer upfront pricing, which means we provide an exact quote for every repair and installation before work begins, and that price never changes.”

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for electrical contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Got Watts Electric, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: take a personalized approach to every job, regardless of its size. “We treat our clients like family, so if someone isn’t happy with our service, we make it our personal business to resolve the matter quickly and efficiently,” says CEO Jeremy Carlock. “Whenever customer satisfaction is at stake, we do whatever it takes to make things right.”

Got Watts Electric has been providing electrical services for residential and commercial clients throughout Contra Costa County since 2009. The company has the training and equipment to repair and maintain all types of electrical systems, and it’s also qualified to install whole house fans and electric vehicle chargers; perform panel and service upgrades; handle the electrical wiring for new construction and remodeling projects; and more.

Unlike less experienced electrical contractors that don’t have the resources or confidence to guarantee their work, Got Watts Electric backs all its craftsmanship with a lifetime warranty, which means any work it performs is guaranteed to last for the lifetime of the product. “For example, if we install a conduit, we guarantee it won’t fall off the wall, and if it does, we’ll reinstall it free of charge,” explains Mr. Carlock. “We take a lot of pride in our work, and backing it with comprehensive warranties is a perfect example of that.”

Another distinguishing feature of Got Watts Electric is its highly experienced technicians, all of whom are trained to utilize industry-best products and techniques. “Not only are our technicians well-versed in the electrical trade, they also make sure their service trucks are fully stocked, so they’re ready for almost any situation,” says Mr. Carlock. “Ninety percent of the time, we have everything we need to get the job done right away, which saves our clients both time and money.”

Industry Info

If you’re thinking about upgrading your home’s HVAC system, consider the benefits of a whole house fan. Air conditioning systems have been the standard home-cooling appliance for many years, and while they continue to have an important function in today’s houses, there’s another, more energy-efficient appliance on the scene: the whole house fan. “A lot of homeowners are starting to realize that air conditioning isn’t always the best solution,” says Jeremy Carlock, CEO of Got Watts Electric in Pleasant Hill. “For example, there are many times when it’s cooler outside than inside, and in those instances, people often wonder if there’s a way to bring in that outside air. That’s where the whole house fan comes in—it’s located in a centralized area of the home and cycles in air during the cooler parts of the day, which allows the homeowner to naturally cool and ventilate their house.”

Mr. Carlock says a whole house fan also provides numerous benefits when it comes to energy efficiency. “When you run an air conditioner, you’re using 10,000 watts of electricity or more. In contrast, when you run a whole house fan, you’re using less than 100 watts on a low setting, and only 300 or 400 watts on a high setting. Since you’re bringing in outside air that’s already naturally cool, you’re getting the same effect as with air conditioning but consuming a lot less energy.”

In addition to saving energy, Mr. Carlock says whole house fans save money over time. “If you don’t want to spend several thousand dollars for a new air conditioning system, you can get a whole house fan for about $1,500. Even better, since you’re now using significantly less power to cool your home, your monthly energy costs will be reduced, which means residual savings over time.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you charge by the hour or by the job?

A: We utilize a flat rate system, which means you’ll know how much your job will cost before we even start working, and that price won’t change without your knowledge. Also, we do all our transactions digitally, which means our technicians can build your quote onsite, capture your signature and immediately provide you with a digital contract.

Q: Should I replace my old electrical panel?

A: A lot of older residential electrical panels are becoming obsolete, particularly those manufactured by Zinsco and Federal Pacific. These outdated panels don’t have the capacity to handle modern power needs, and they can also represent a fire hazard, so we recommend replacing them as soon as possible, especially if they’ve lost their UL listing.

Q: Can my recessed light fixtures be retrofitted to accept LED bulbs?

A: With the increased interest in energy efficiency, LED lighting conversion is a popular request these days. While some situations are more complicated than others, existing recessed lights can typically be retrofitted without any drywall damage.

Q: Are your technicians knowledgeable?

A: We can confidently say that all of our technicians are personable, honest and reliable experts. We make it a point to only hire top-notch individuals—to even be considered, an applicant must have a minimum of three years’ experience and be either a state-licensed journeyman or in a state-appointed training program.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Jeremy Carlock

Jeremy Carlock: High Wattage

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

PLEASANT HILL — While pursuing a career in law enforcement, Jeremy Carlock decided to cushion his professional future by learning a trade on the side. Little did he know, this secondary venture would later become his primary livelihood. “After high school, I enrolled in the California Highway Patrol Academy,” he recounts. “When one of my classes was put on hold, I went to work for a family friend who owned an electrical company. I figured it would be good to learn a skill that would keep me employable, in case I was ever laid off from law enforcement. After a couple of years, I decided to switch my focus to electrical work and applied to a union apprenticeship program.”

Having transitioned into full-time electrical work, Jeremy thought his future was secure—that is, until the economic downturn of 2008 left him without a job. However, amidst this seeming career setback, he was able to find a silver lining. “The 2008 crash hit the electrical industry really hard,” he remembers. “The company I worked for went from 125 employees to about 15, and I was one of the last to be laid off. Fortunately, I had been doing a little electrical work on the side, so it allowed me to devote more energy toward developing my own business. Things really started to take off around 2010, and my business has been growing ever since.”

Today, as owner of Got Watts Electric, Jeremy says his favorite part of his job is getting to the root of difficult problems. “I love troubleshooting—sometimes I call myself a professional problem solver. Whether it’s determining the cause of a malfunction or figuring out a creative way to access a hard-to-reach space, problem-solving is probably the most enjoyable part of it for me.”

A lifetime resident of the East Bay, Jeremy resides today near Benicia with his wife, Andrea, and their infant son, Justin. Not surprisingly, he says the bulk of his time outside of work is devoted to his family. “Most of my hobbies have been put on hold due to the birth of our child. Normally, my wife and I enjoy outdoor activities and trying different restaurants, but right now, we spend all of our time caring for and playing with our son.”

In regard to a professional philosophy, Jeremy invokes the age-old Golden Rule. “My staff and I try to treat everyone the same way we’d want to be treated,” he explains. “So, when it comes to our customers’ projects, we take care of them and make sure they’re happy. We take the same detail-oriented approach on every project, regardless of its size, because to us, the customer’s satisfaction is always the top priority.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Jeremy says it would be a toss-up between two choices. “I would either rent a motorhome and take my family on a road trip or fly us to Mexico and hang out on the beach. Whichever sounds better at the time—I guess I can’t go wrong either way.”

Ask Me Anything!

A: “Gold Rush” and “Deadliest Catch.”

A: Legos.

Q: Who’s your favorite movie monster?

  • The Whole House Fan Advantage

PLEASANT HILL — If you’re looking for a more energy-efficient way to cool your home, a whole house fan might be the solution.

During the summer, it’s common for people to run their air conditioners until late at night, not realizing that it’s actually cooler outside their homes than it is inside. A whole house fan is designed to bring in this cool outdoor air while simultaneously cycling out the warm indoor air. This cools and refreshes the home naturally, rather than artificially as an air condition system does. Additionally, a whole house fan is a far more energy-efficient option: on average, it consumes 65 watts on the low setting and 250 watts on the high setting, which is considerably less than a 10,000-watt air conditioning system.

By installing a whole house fan, you’ll breathe easier in more ways than one: Not only will your air be fresher, you’ll also decrease your carbon footprint and save money on your energy bills.

  • Video: Advantages of a Whole House Fan

    Complete Video Transcription:

PLEASANT HILL — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re looking for a low-cost, energy-efficient way to cool your home, it’s worthwhile to consider the many benefits of a whole house fan. Today we’re in Pleasant Hill with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Jeremy Carlock of Got Watts Electric to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Jeremy Carlock: If you’re looking for an energy efficient way to cool your whole home, a whole house fan might be the solution for you.

This right here is a whole house fan while on low consumes 65 watts and on high 250 watts. That’s considerably less than an air-conditioning unit. The concept behind a whole house fan is the fan is mounted in the attic just like this picture here. You can see a bigger model here. This is an actual fan. It’s suspended from the roof joists so you get very minimal sound while the fan is running in your home.

Below here is what is mounted in the house. This is a register, and behind that is some dampers. When the fan is turned on, the dampers are open. When the fan is turned off, the dampers close. This creates an insulation rating between the attic space and the home so you get no dust or anything coming back down into the house.

All fans have multiple speeds. This one has a low and a high setting. On low this is 65 watts of energy consumption, and on high this would be 250 watts of energy consumption. This is considerably less than an eight to ten-thousand-watt air conditioning system. The concept behind whole house fans is that you turn the fan on. It’s centralized in the home. You open up a few windows and create a breeze through the home.

Ideally a fan would be good to use in the mornings and in the evenings, when you see a relatively cooler temperature outside. A lot of people that have air conditioning will run till nine/ten o’clock at night, not realizing that it’s actually cooler outside than it is inside their home.

I would say the time frame and getting things done when they said they would, they were clean with no mess and quick about the project.
