Take simple steps to reduce the utility costs of maintaining your swimming pool.

Considering the amount of energy required to pump and filter thousands of gallons of water, it’s not surprising that a swimming pool can dramatically impact a home’s energy usage. In fact, research shows that the addition of a pool can increase a home’s electricity consumption by as much as 50 percent. Fortunately, a pool’s financial impact can be lessened by implementing a few energy-saving measures. Here are a few to consider:

Turn down the temperature. While the average pool’s temperature ranges between 78 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, it’s important to keep in mind that for every increase in temperature there follows an exponential increase in energy costs. For this reason, consider treating your pool’s heater like your home’s thermostat—keep it at the lowest comfortable setting to minimize energy expenditures.

Use a pool cover. In addition to keeping your pool warmer, a cover can reduce evaporation by more than 90 percent. The entirety of a pool’s 20,000 gallons of water can evaporate over the course of a year, so this can save you a lot on refilling costs. Also, using a pool cover will cause your filter pump to work less to keep debris out of the water.

Install a variable-speed pump. While a one-speed pump ramps up energy costs, a variable-speed pump optimizes energy efficiency by alternating between slow and fast modes, which reduces electricity consumption by as much as 75 percent. In addition, utility companies often offer rebates upon purchase of an efficient pool pump. 

Reduce pool pump runtime. Recommendations vary on how long a pool pump needs to run each day, but many pool owners run their pumps for longer than necessary. To avoid this expensive excess, set your pump to run at the minimum required runtime and taper up or down depending on your needs. Also, instead of running your pool pump continuously for the full duration, consider setting it to run at two or three different intervals throughout the day. For example, you could run it for two hours in the morning, two hours in the mid-afternoon and two hours in the evening.

A: I’ll schedule you for a certain day and then give you a small window that’s based on both of our schedules. Even though I can’t offer a specific appointment time, I’ll do my best to come over at the most convenient time for you. Also, if I’m running late or something pops up, I’ll call or text you as soon as possible to keep you informed.

Q: Do I need to be home while you work on my pool?
A: No. As long as I have access to your backyard, I can take care of everything. If your gate is locked, I’ll just need a key or code.

Q: How long will my pool pump last?
A: Most pool pumps last two years or more. That technology is always improving, though, so if you buy a newer pool pump, it should last a long time.

Q: Can you replaster my pool?
A: No, but I can connect you with a qualified, experienced contractor who can handle that for you.

Q: Will you come back to my house if something is wrong with your work?
A: Absolutely. I always guarantee my work, so if I installed some equipment and it isn’t running correctly, I’ll come back and fix the problem as soon as possible.

Those guys are awesome. They have been really helpful.

Not only are they friendly and very good people, but they definitely put forth magnificent effort with their multimedia campaigns on social media and their quality. My pool was in complete disarray, and I needed to get it ready for a luau birthday party I was having for my niece. I needed it ready in 5 to 6 days and they got it done, taking it from looking like a swamp to something clean and ready for the kids to get in and swim. It was great.
