Jose Calderon: Diving Back In
By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter
VACAVILLE — After taking a brief detour from his pool service career, Jose Calderon decided to dive back in and go deeper than ever before. “My first pool service job was with a company in San Jose,” he recounts. “Jim, the owner, was like the Mr. Miyagi of pool service and taught me everything I know about chemistry and maintenance. Later, when I took a job selling cars, I gave my position to my younger brother, Christopher, who ended up starting his own pool service business in Sacramento. A few years after that, I was thinking about starting a pool service business myself, but I was hesitant because I didn’t want to compete with my brother. However, he encouraged me to go for it, so I did. Today, he and I help each other and refer customers to each other in our respective service areas, so that’s really neat.”
As the owner of Diamond Image Pool Service, Jose says his favorite part of his job is seeing the results of his work. “While I enjoy being my own boss and working outside, I think my favorite part is the satisfaction of taking a pool from green to clean. It’s very rewarding to see my customers happy and enjoying themselves in their pools.”
A resident of Vacaville (where he lives with his wife, Michelle, and their four children), Jose spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “Family time is big for me,” he says. “We own a boat, so we like going up to Lake Tahoe and spending time on the water. I’m also involved in competitive shooting and I enjoy going to the range with my eldest son.”
In regard to a professional philosophy, Jose says it’s all about customer service and satisfaction. “Our number one thing is making sure we give our customers the best possible service. We always tell them, ‘Our job is to clean the pool, your job is to jump in and invite us to the pool party.’ When we get a new client who has a green pool and we bring it back to Diamond Image clarity, we tell them, ‘You know your pool is right when the pool guy jumps in!’”
When asked about his future goals with the company, Jose says he’d like to continue growing it. “I want to start hiring some employees and get to the point where I can just be the owner instead of the owner-operator. I also look forward to handing the business down to my children one day. I want it to be my legacy.”
