I was experiencing some odd, mysterious problems with a few different appliances. Chris came out, and he never gave up trying to figure it out. He was relentless. He was wonderful to do business with, and I appreciated that. Also, he didn't charge me an arm and a leg for the repairs, which was really surprising. I was expecting it to cost way more. They definitely have a more than reasonable price that should put other companies to shame.

He was honest and didn't give up.

Take simple steps to keep your refrigerator running at its optimal condition. Most homeowners use their refrigerators every day and rely on the appliances to keep their food safe, but according to Chris Gill, owner of CJ’s Mechanical Services Inc. in Santa Rosa, fridge maintenance is often overlooked and can result in costly service calls that could have been easily prevented. “For one, regularly cleaning the condenser coil underneath your refrigerator will help extend its life,” he says. “Pet hair, dust and debris can build up on these coils and cause refrigerators to become less effective. A lot of people think their fridges just aren’t set cold enough, but the condenser coils are usually the real culprits.”

Worse than spoiled milk and melted ice cream, clogged coils cause refrigerator compressors to work harder over time, which can prematurely wear out the appliances. “Compressors cost up to $600 to replace, but vacuuming that little coil every six months can make a big difference,” says Mr. Gill. “Cleaning the coil is easy—it’s usually found underneath the fridge, directly behind the grill just below the door. Simply remove the plate and use a vacuum with a narrow hose or crevice attachment to clean it out.”

Mr. Gill says this method can also be used to clean the condensing units in HVAC systems. Like refrigerator coils, the condenser coils on these systems can attract dust and hair, which causes them to be less effective and work too hard, leading to compressor failure. Regular maintenance by a professional can help you avoid these issues, but you can also do it yourself. “I recommend unplugging the device, locating the grill or faceplate and removing it to expose the coils,” says Mr. Gill. “You can use a vacuum with a crevice tool to remove the dust, but wiping the coils with a rag will also work.”

Q: How much do you charge for a service call?

A: My service calls are determined by location. For locations in Santa Rosa, there’s a flat diagnostic charge of $59, and locations outside of Santa Rosa range from $69 to $79, depending on the distance.

Q: How soon can you start my job?

A: It depends on my previously scheduled appointments and what works best for your schedule, but I can usually get to most jobs very quickly. I understand that most homeowners work during the day, so I work around my customers’ schedules and keep my hours flexible. I’m even available for evening and weekend appointments.

Q: What’s your usual order of service?

A: First, I’ll come to your location and provide a diagnosis. If you want to move forward with repairs, I’ll order all the necessary parts. I carry some common parts in my truck and might be able to fix certain problems right away, but due to the variety of appliances and parts, it’s impossible to have everything in stock for all brands and models. Once I have the parts I need, I’ll fix your appliance.

Q: Who will perform the actual work?

A: As the sole proprietor, I provide all estimates and services. You’ll talk with me when you make the initial call, and I’ll be onsite doing all the work.

Q: Do you offer preventative maintenance plans for appliances and HVAC systems?

A: Yes. Preventative maintenance can keep your appliances and HVAC systems in good running condition and help them last longer. Call me for more information and to set up a maintenance agreement.

Q: How long will my refrigerator last before it needs to be replaced?

A: If you properly maintain your refrigerator and clean its condenser coils on a regular basis, it should last 20 to 25 years.
