Comparative Summary

Auto repair shops are always looking for ways to differentiate themselves from their competition, and those that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award are already several steps ahead. In addition to its Diamond Certified status, Cartex One Stop Auto sets itself apart by utilizing the industry’s most cutting-edge equipment and technology to better serve its customers. “We have a lot of features that other shops don’t have,” says Co-Owner Scott Conway. “For example, all of our inspections are done on tablets so we can show our customers photos and videos of their vehicles, even if they’re at home or work. They really appreciate how dedicated we are to providing them with the best possible service.”

Cartex One Stop Auto has been repairing and maintaining domestic and foreign vehicles at its San Jose facility since 1994. The company has the in-house capabilities to handle every aspect of auto repair, from fluid changes and air conditioning service to comprehensive engine and transmission work, and it’s also qualified to perform smog checks, brake and lamp inspections, and more.

Unlike auto repair shops that offer minimal warranties and leave their customers’ cars unprotected as a result, Cartex One Stop Auto provides a two-year/24,000-mile nationwide warranty on most repairs and a lifetime warranty on components like belts, hoses, shocks, and struts. “If we fix a customer’s car and something goes wrong while they’re out of the area, their warranty will still be valid, which is a guarantee that most independent shops can’t offer,” explains Mr. Conway. “Our customers know we’ll always be there to help them with their cars.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Cartex One Stop Auto is its ability to provide dealership-level services at competitive prices. “Our customers like having an alternative to dealerships, and they know we’ll be able to provide the same high-quality diagnostics and repairs,” says owner Joe Galas. “From original equipment manufacturer parts to vehicle-specific fluids, we know what it takes to ensure the best results for our customers’ cars.”

Industry Info

Using the right replacement fluids in your vehicle can increase its performance and lifespan. If you’ve ever taken the time to read your vehicle’s owner’s manual, you may have been surprised to learn that the manufacturer recommends using only factory-specific fluids (with the exception of motor oil). That means any time you or your mechanic change your transmission fluid, power steering fluid, engine coolant, or differential gear oil, manufacturer-issued replacements should be used.

If you take your vehicle to the dealership’s repair shop, you’ll likely get the manufacturer-recommended fluids, but that’s not necessarily the case if you visit an independent shop. “Most independent shops use universal fluids, which means they put the same type of transmission fluid into Hondas, Fords, Mercedes-Benzes and so on,” says Joe Galas, owner of Cartex One Stop Auto in San Jose. That might be easier for the technicians and possibly even cheaper for you, but experts say it can lead to problems in the future.

The reason has to do with corrosion. Automakers use varying and often proprietary aluminum alloys in their vehicles to make them lighter and, therefore, more fuel-efficient. However, since each of those aluminum alloy parts is unique, they require different fluid blends to prevent them from weakening and corroding over time.

Getting the right fluids during scheduled maintenance visits
Many vehicle owners like the flexibility that independent auto repair shops offer, but most don’t realize that some of these shops choose the cheaper route when it comes to performing routine maintenance tasks like changing fluids. This might seem like a better deal in the moment, but it can harm your vehicle over time and shorten its lifespan. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t get original equipment manufacturer (OEM) fluids from an independent shop. Just like aftermarket versus OEM parts, all you need to do is ask your shop to use manufacturer-specific fluids in your vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I wait while you work on my car?

A: Absolutely. We have a new waiting room with Wi-Fi, hot drinks and other comforts. If it’s a larger job, we have a shuttle that can take you home or to work, and we also have loaner cars available if your car will be in the shop for several days.

Q: What’s your warranty coverage for repairs and services?

A: On most services, our warranty is two years or 24,000 miles, and it’s nationwide. That means if you get your car fixed here and something goes wrong in a different area, your warranty will be valid at another shop. We also provide a lifetime warranty on belts, hoses, shocks, struts and brakes.

Q: Do you use original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts?

A: Yes. We’ve found that when it comes to performing repairs that require computer sensors, it’s best to go with OEM parts.

Q: Can I bring in parts for you to install?

A: No. In order to keep our nationwide warranty in effect, we have to install parts that we’ve purchased. We only stand behind parts that come through us and our suppliers because that’s the only way we can verify their quality.

Q: Can you help me with body repairs or paint?

A: No, we only handle mechanical repairs, but we can refer you to a specialized shop that deals with body repairs and paint if you need those services.

Q: Why does my car squeal when I start it in the morning?

A: Normally, that’s the sound of a loose or worn belt rubbing against the alternator. As the battery starts, the squeal should go away. However, you should keep an eye on it—the next step after squealing is breaking, which can mean an expensive repair. If your car constantly squeals when you start it, consider bringing it in for a diagnosis. Sometimes the belt just needs to be tightened, but if it’s excessively worn, it’s a good idea to have it replaced.

Q: Do I need to let my car warm up before I drive?

A: No, newer cars are made to react very fast, so a warm-up isn’t necessary. When it comes to emissions, it actually does more harm than good.

Q: Do I need to be concerned if my “check engine” light comes on?

A: Yes. When a check engine light comes on, you usually won’t feel a problem, but if there’s an issue with your car’s computer adjusting the air/fuel mixture and it’s running too rich or lean, you could damage other parts like the catalytic converter. Sometimes a check engine light is something simple like a loose gas cap, but you want to be sure, so you should get it checked as soon as possible.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Scott Conway

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Scott Conway is a 38-year veteran of the auto repair industry and owner of Cartex One Stop Auto, a Diamond Certified company. He can be reached at (408) 645-0048 or by email.

Scott Conway: One Stop for Success

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN JOSE — Growing up in New Jersey, Scott Conway started working on cars before he was even old enough to drive them. “I built my first hot rod when I was 13, out of a 1971 Chevrolet Nova,” he remembers. “Around that time, I was working at an appliance repair shop, which was across the street from an auto mechanic’s shop. Since they were owned by the same guy, I was able to gradually transition from appliance repair to auto repair, and I’ve been at it ever since.”

In the same way that he migrated from one side of the street to the other, Scott moved from the East Coast to the Bay Area in 1990, where he’s since continued to advance his automotive career. Today, as owner of Cartex One Stop Auto, Scott says his favorite part of his job is its continual novelty. “I’ve never had the same day twice. At one point, I took a brief break from automotive work and got into advertising, but I couldn’t stand it because it was the same thing every day. In auto repair, there are always new challenges and you’re always learning new things.”

A 26-year resident of the Bay Area, Scott resides in Gilroy with his wife, Jody. Outside of work, some of his favorite pastimes include playing guitar, hunting and fishing. “I like ocean fishing, so I usually go off the coast of Monterey for rock cod and lingcod, and sometimes I’ll go out a few extra miles for tuna.” Scott also enjoys spending time with his family. “Jody and I have seven kids between us, and we also raised two of her nephews. Most of the kids are grown up, and now we have three grandchildren, so we’re enjoying being grandparents.”

In regard to his professional career, Scott believes in providing customers with the best products and service available. “Our tagline is, ‘The clear alternative to dealer service,’ because we provide the same level of quality as a dealership for a lower price,” he explains. “To do this, we make it a point to have the most cutting-edge technology and offer customers a full range of options. For example, we’re able to conduct digital inspections, where the customer can participate remotely via computer, and we also keep about 50 different kinds of fluids in stock. Those are just a couple of things that set us apart from the average auto repair shop.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Scott says he’d head to his favorite fishing spot. “My favorite place to fish is Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and I used to go down there about four times a year. It’s been a while since I’ve had a chance to go, so if I were to retire tomorrow, I’d take an extra-long trip to make up for lost time.”

Ask Me Anything!

A: Longhouse Restaurant in Gilroy.

Q: Music or talk radio?
A: Talk radio.

Q: Do you collect anything?
A: Antique bottles. I started collecting them while growing up in New Jersey, and I still collect them today.

  • Proper Maintenance of Modern Cars

SAN JOSE — Many of today’s newer vehicles (especially the high-end ones) utilize specialty products like synthetic oil, as well as specific types of coolants and transmission fluids. In addition to being relatively new, these products tend to cost more than conventional ones, which is why many vehicle owners question whether they’re really necessary. The answer: yes, they are. Due to the cutting-edge technology they contain, modern engines require particular fluids and additives to function correctly and achieve maximum fuel economy.

Due to the importance of these products for proper engine functioning, it’s critical to take your vehicle to an auto repair shop that stays up-to-date with the latest industry technology. If you have your car serviced at a shop that doesn’t use the correct fluids, you may not notice an immediate difference, but 20,000 miles later, you’re going to have problems with engine components like cam lobes and actuators. To avoid this, take your car to a facility that understands its needs and keeps the correct fluids and additives on hand.

  • Video: Professional Care for a High-End Vehicle

    Complete Video Transcription:

SAN JOSE — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you drive a high-end vehicle, it’s critical that your auto repair shop understands the specific products and services it requires. To learn more, we’re in San Jose with Joe Galas of Cartex One Stop Auto, speaking on behalf of Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Scott Conway.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Scott Conway: We often get a lot of questions from customers on the newer vehicles as to why they have to use higher price synthetic oils or special coolants or transmission fluids, and you want to go to a shop that understand the reason and the need for those. And part of those are due to the technology with fuel savings of engines using variable valve timing, and other components in the transmission that have to have a specific additive package to function correctly and get the proper gas mileage. Customers don’t realize if they are doing this type of service at a shop that is not using the correct fluids, if you will, there’s no immediate concern. But what happens is, 15, 20 thousand miles later, the engines, transmissions, in these complex variable valve timing – Cam lobes start getting somewhere, actuators start freezing up. So that’s the – a big concern that you need to go to a facility that understands and keeps all the correct fluids and additives on hand for the vehicle.
