That they're a home-run or personally-run organization, and the owner was extremely attentive. The quality was really good, and I definitely strongly felt that they wouldn't leave me high and dry and that they would come through no matter what, and that's super important. It leaves me with a secure feeling.

Their flexibility, I only used them once when I was out of town, and they were extremely flexible and willingness to work with me and followed through. The price was totally right and surprisingly good for a holiday. There was actually some confusion with the bill because it was going to be a different price from usual, but she clarified it right away and honored the original price. It was a really good experience and trust me, I've had a lot of experiences with in-home care. I wish they or a business like them was down here in San Luis Obispo where I live. I would use them in a heartbeat. I wish there was a place here with that kind of quality.

What they really do is, they give me confidence that my dad is being cared for which allows me to sleep at night. I know that they always made a great attempt, if we needed more care, they find someone who could come over. They made me feel comfortable and confident.

They give me a lot of comfort that my dad is getting good care. The immediacy of their response to any needs or concerns that my dad may need 24-hour care instead of 6-hour, they will work to get that at short notice. They respond quickly to needs. I expect everyone to provide quality care and Care From the Heart definitely does that. What sets them apart is when we need something on the spur of the moment, they go out of their way to make sure we get that.

Jackie Tucker: A Lifetime of Caregiving

SOQUEL — Ever since she was a young girl, Jackie Tucker has felt her purpose was to take care of others. Jackie has been working in elder care since her teens; her godmother, Irma Bravo, operated several board-and-care facilities in Santa Monica, and it was under her guidance that Jackie took the first steps on her vocational path. She earned her degree as a residential care facility administrator and worked in several homes where she further developed her skills. Jackie later moved to Santa Cruz and fulfilled her dream of starting her own agency, Care From The Heart – In Home Services, Inc. “It’s in my core to be a care provider,” she says. “It’s my passion.”

What Jackie loves most about her job are the profound connections she makes with others. “I aim to develop an intuitive understanding of my patients—the kind of connection where things are left unsaid and there’s a heartfelt feeling that you’re present with the other person,” she explains. For Jackie, true caregiving means being fully at peace in the presence of another.

Today, Jackie lives in Santa Cruz County with her husband, Jeff, a firefighter and co-owner of Care From The Heart, and their teenage daughter, who attends Kirby School. Jackie says her favorite part of the Bay Area is her very own neighborhood. “It’s exquisite. It’s an old country road where many residents have lived for years. One of our neighbors is actually a beekeeper.” On her own property, Jackie keeps a goat, a pig, sheep, chickens and roosters. In her spare time, she takes advantage of the outdoors by horseback riding and camping, and she also enjoys listening to jazz.

Jackie says being a business owner means earning her daily bread through hard, honest work. She credits her successes not only to herself, but to divine intervention and the support of her mentors and husband. At the end of the day, Jackie’s mission is to treat patients and family members with dignity and respect so they feel secure during their time of need. “Caring for others has always come naturally to me, and for that, I’m grateful.”

A: Sit in a rocking chair with an afghan on my lap in front of a large window, drink coffee and listen to jazz.

A: Can I pick goat person? I love my goat; he always calls out to me when I’m leaving my house or when I’m coming home. It’s very moving.

  • How to Identify and Treat Bedsores

    SOQUEL — When caring for someone with reduced mobility, it’s important to keep an eye out for bedsores. A bedsore is an injury to the skin and underlying tissue that results from prolonged pressure on a particular area. These injuries progress through four stages, but it’s important to try to identify them as early as possible.

    The first step is to survey the skin and pay close attention to the areas where the skin and bones meet. For fair-skinned people, observe if the skin looks reddish; for those with medium-toned or darker skin, notice any discolorations. Massage these areas to bring some warmth and movement into the tissue and wait to see if the skin changes color. If the skin remains the same, it indicates oxygen isn’t reaching the tissue—this is a stage one bedsore.

    To treat a stage one bedsore, reposition the person to reduce pressure on the affected area. Use as many pillows or cushions as necessary to ensure their comfort. Don’t forget to elevate their feet so the heels are in the air and not rubbing against the sheets. Continue to massage the discolored tissue as needed.

    SOQUEL — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re caring for an elderly loved one who’s bedbound, you’ll need to take proactive steps to prevent bedsores. Today we’re in Soquel with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Jackie Tucker of Care from the Heart – In Home Services to learn more.

    Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Jackie Tucker: We’re going to be talking about bedsores. So, what is considered a bedsore? It is injury to the skin, underlying tissue, resulting from prolonged pressure on the skin. And there are four stages. We’re going to discuss stage 1, today. So, you’ll be able to identify a stage 1 bedsore with a person with lighter skin by finding a red spot on those bony areas. People with darker skin — the area will be discolored.

    You massage the area, and if the affected skin tissue remains the same color, that is considered a stage 1 bedsore because there’s no oxygen or circulation going through the affected area. To treat a person who’s having a stage 1 bedsore, you do the following please: you massage the area for a little bit and try to bring some warmth to it. If the skin remains the same, then that is considered a stage 1 bedsore.

    So, to treat it, you need to reposition the person if he or she is bedbound. Make sure that there’s plenty of pillows for comfort. Elevate the heels as well so that they’re up in the air, and they’re not rubbing against the sheet. And also continue to massage the area to bring some healing to it.

I've already told people, if you have a need for a hospice service that they're very good, on time, they took very good care of her and we were very pleased. We've recommended them to the families of two other patients.

I would recommend Care from the Heart for hospice in case their mother or father needs this attention while they're on, what is basically, their deathbed.

They call me up and inform me about what's going on with my mom. They're doing a good job and I appreciate what they did for my mom. I'll call them back when my mom needs more help, I'm going to call it her journey.

My only critique is that it's difficult for them to have enough caregivers to give us the same person all the time, but we are new to the program and that is part of the problem because we don't have that seniority. Every single caregiver who has come has been awesome.

Their friendliness, my feeling that they're trustworthy. When we're having someone strange come into our home, I always have a concern. But I can leave while they're here and I don't worry about it and that's very important to me. It lets me relax and gives me a real break from my 24/7 caregiving.
