Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for paving stone companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Brasmerica Pavers System, the best way to keep clients happy is to serve their needs regardless of the size of their projects. “We’re prepared to do whatever our customers need,” says Partner Alberto Lisboa. “No job is too big or too small—if there are pavers involved, we’re ready to help.”

Brasmerica Pavers System has been providing hardscaping services for residential and commercial clients in Sonoma County and the East Bay since 2017. In addition to using high-quality paving stones to build everything from walkways and pathways to retaining walls and swimming pool surrounds, the company has the in-house capabilities to perform demolition and excavation work.

Unlike paving stone companies that rely heavily on subcontracted labor, Brasmerica Pavers System makes it a point to keep all work in-house. “We don’t outsource jobs like a lot of paver companies do,” affirms Mr. Lisboa. “By keeping everything in-house, we’re able to have more control over the quality of our work, which helps us ensure first-class results.”

Ultimately, Mr. Lisboa sees Brasmerica Pavers System’s dedication to quality as one of its most important attributes. “We never install subpar products for our clients,” he asserts. “In fact, we only use pavers that come with lifetime manufacturers’ warranties. We also check the pavers before they’re delivered to the jobsite so we can verify everything is in good condition and nothing is damaged.”

Industry Info

If you’re having paving stones installed on your property, make sure your contractor incorporates the latest industry innovations.

“The paver industry has undergone a lot of changes over the last decade,” says Alberto Lisboa, co-owner of Brasmerica Pavers System in Pinole. “As a result, there are methods and products in use today that can dramatically improve a paver feature’s performance and lifespan.”

Here are a few innovations you should consider incorporating with your paver installation:

Geotextile fabric
This permeable material is laid down following the excavation phase. By providing a barrier between the base rock and the soil beneath, geotextile fabric helps stabilize the pavers’ substructure, and as a result, the paver feature as a whole.

Polymeric joint sand
Over time, regular joint sand can be washed out by water or blown out by wind. To avoid this problem, polymeric joint sand is designed to harden in place following application. This reduces both the need to reapply joint sand and the chances for problems caused by exposed joints.

Concrete edges
In the past, most paver edging was made of plastic, the flimsiness of which would usually result in premature failure. With concrete edges, your paver feature’s edging should last as long as the pavers themselves.

Paver maintenance tips

  • Watch out for “efflorescence”— a white residue that occurs when free lime is released from the inside of concrete and carried to the surface by water. Efflorescence won’t damage your pavers and will eventually wear away, but you can quickly remove it by using a cleaner that’s specifically made for pavers. Many of those products contain diluted acids and detergents, so be careful when applying them.
  • As your pavers are exposed to weather and traffic, their cement and color pigment particles will gradually erode, which causes them to change color over time. You can moderate the rate at which your pavers change color by sealing their surfaces. Sealers can actually bring out the subtle colors of pavers in addition to retaining the original colors. Some people prefer the faded look of unsealed pavers, but if you want your pavers to look like new, sealers are a good option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are the benefits of pavers?
A: Pavers offer several benefits, including unlimited design options, flexibility (they won’t crack due to soil movement), ease of repairs (individual pavers can be replaced without disrupting the entire installation) and increased home resale value.

Q: What kind of maintenance do pavers require?
A: As long as the pavers are high-quality and were installed correctly, they don’t need much maintenance.

Q: Do I need to seal my pavers?
A: It depends. For a driveway or an area where you do a lot of cooking or entertaining, a sealant can help protect the pavers against oil, grease and beverage spills. Also, if you want your pavers to have a glossier look, a sealant will provide that.

Q: How often should I reseal my pavers?
A: Many companies claim that paver sealant will last five years, but in our experience this isn’t true. We recommend having your pavers resealed every three years.

Q: How do I know if my pavers need to be replaced?
A: Some warning signs include cracks, expanded spaces between paver joints, an uneven surface and substantial color fading.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Carlos Barbosa

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

Carlos Barbosa: Paver Protégé

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

PINOLE — When asked about the origin of his career in the paver industry, Carlos Barbosa says it all started with a casual friendship. “Before I started working with pavers, I worked for my dad doing excavation and debris hauling. In 2009, I met Alberto Lisboa, who was installing pavers as a subcontractor on a jobsite I was on, and we became friends. A few years later, Alberto started his own paver business and told me I should come work for him—an opportunity I gladly accepted. He thought I’d be good at sales but felt I first needed to get an education in the industry. For the next three years, I worked alongside Alberto and he taught me everything I needed to know. Finally, after acquiring the requisite knowledge and experience, I moved into the sales department.”

Today, as sales manager of Brasmerica Pavers System, Carlos says his favorite part of his job is seeing the end result of each project. “I enjoy every step of the process, from meeting with clients to helping them with designs. However, my favorite part is actually seeing the design come into being, because that’s when you know you’ve accomplished your goal.”

A resident of Pinole (where he lives with his wife, Sandra, and their two children), Carlos spends his free time on a variety of pastimes. “I enjoy watching sports, especially soccer, hanging out with friends and family, and traveling,” he details. “Due to the demands of work, I don’t go on a lot of long trips, but I do take two or three mini-vacations each year. I like going to Las Vegas, South Lake Tahoe and other destinations that are near enough to make a short visit worthwhile.”

In his life and career, Carlos espouses the value of a respectful attitude. “Respecting others is the most important thing to me,” he affirms. “In regard to my job, this means being respectful of my clients and their homes. When you go into someone’s home and work on their property, you have to respect their space. You also have to remember it’s their project, and they’re entitled to a good value for the money they’re paying you. I show each client respect by making sure they’re served well and receive a high-quality final product.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Carlos says he’d pay a visit to his home country. “I would take a trip to Brazil, which is where I’m from. I’d probably spend a month or so just visiting the family and friends I have there.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?

A: Brasas Do Brazil in Concord.

A: FC Barcelona and the Brazilian national football team.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

A: Dubai.

Q: What’s your favorite holiday?

  • An Important Credential for Paver Contractors

PINOLE — One of the most important steps of hiring a contractor is verifying their credentials, including proper licensing and insurance. If you’re hiring for a paver project, one important credential to look for is certification with the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI). This certification provides added assurance that the contractor is well-versed in the processes and standards of quality paver installation.

An ICPI Certified paver contractor’s detailed knowledge of paver installation can go a long way toward ensuring a quality product. For example, they’ll know the correct excavation depth for the particular kind of paver feature they’re installing. Whereas seven inches is a typical excavation depth for a paver walkway, a paver driveway requires an excavation depth of nine to 10 inches to ensure a solid foundation.

Additionally, an ICPI Certified paver contractor will know about the latest industry innovations and incorporate them with your project. For example, they’ll know to put down a geotextile fabric following excavation. By providing a barrier between the soil and base rock, this permeable material adds to a paver feature’s stability and helps prevent weed growth. Geotextile fabric is one of many innovative materials that help maximize paver feature performance and lifespan.

  • Video: Polymeric Joint Sand for Pavers

    Complete Video Transcription:

PINOLE — Host, Sarah Rutan: When installing a new paver feature on your property, there’s one feature that’s worth the additional investment. Today we’re in Pinole with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Carlos Barbosa of Brasmerica Pavers System to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Carlos Barbosa: When you choose your contract, make sure what kind of sand they are going to use on your paver joints. I, as a professional, advise you to use polymeric sand instead of regular ones. It’s because the polymeric sand has a special glue that’s when gets to the joint, it gets hard. And it’s important to have because with the rain, you won’t get – the sand will not get wash out.
