I would absolutely use them again and found Andrew to be really helpful. The most surprising aspect for me was that Andrew clearly really cares about his clients and is not just in it to make money. I feel that way because I was going through a super tough time with a divorce and everything was such a mess that other contractors didn't want to do the work for me. I could tell he cared. I thought his guys were really good and spot on with their work.

All of the workers were helpful, polite, on time, and they did a whole bunch of stuff on the side of the main work that was well designed and done well. They knew what they were doing.

The owner, Andrew, is very knowledgeable and I found him to be easy to work with. He went out of his way to really make my project work well. It was a big project and the subcontractors he had working with him were not the cheapest, but were probably the best. They could do the work, responded on time, and the quality was excellent.

The job was a very expensive renovation to a house I inherited. It had been badly neglected. The plumbing was bad, there was a failed heating system, and one of the walls had a large hole in it. There was a lot of dry rot, so it was lengthy. I am very satisfied with the outcome and their quality.

Comparative Summary

Design/build construction firms are always looking for ways to differentiate themselves from their competition, and those that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award are already several steps ahead. In addition to its Diamond Certified status, Blue Dog Construction & Renovation sets itself apart by drawing upon owner Andrew Gregor’s background in architectural design to offer highly specialized service. “Before getting into construction, I ran an award-winning architectural practice for 17 years in Germany,” affirms Mr. Gregor. “Because of my experience, we’re adept at interpreting each client’s vision for their project and executing it with precision and quality.”

Blue Dog Construction & Renovation has been providing construction and remodeling services for residential clients in Contra Costa and Alameda Counties since 2006. The company utilizes its design/build capabilities to handle every step of the construction process in-house, and it uses environmentally-friendly products like recyclable insulation materials and regionally grown lumber whenever possible.

Unlike less experienced contractors that take an “assembly line” approach to each job in an effort to increase their workload volume, Blue Dog Construction & Renovation takes the requisite time to ensure accuracy on every build. “With framing, for example, most contractors try to get it done as quickly as possible, but since framing lays the foundation for other phases like drywall and windows, accuracy is critical,” explains Mr. Gregor. “By making sure our framing is straight, plumb and flat, we’re able to ensure accuracy with subsequent phases and the final product.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Blue Dog Construction & Renovation is its painstaking approach to quality control in every aspect of its operations. “Our site supervisor always checks the work that has been done before the next phase begins,” says Mr. Gregor. “For example, after the drywall people are done with their part of the job, the supervisor checks it before the painters come in, and so on. This procedure allows us to ensure quality workmanship at each phase of the project.”

Industry Info

When deciding on a design/build contractor, having realistic expectations can help you make a wise choice.

Any homeowner wants the best possible scenario for their construction project: a high-quality job completed efficiently for a low cost. Unfortunately, as Andrew Gregor of Blue Dog Construction & Renovation explains, this ideal rarely matches up with reality. “Generally speaking, there’s no such thing as a cheap project that gets finished really fast and has a high-quality finish,” he says. “You can get a high-quality project done very quickly, but it’s going to cost you a fortune. Alternately, you can get a job done quickly for a low price, but it won’t be high quality. So, when getting bids on a project, you need to have realistic expectations about things like cost and timeline.”

When it comes to assessing contractor bids, Mr. Gregor cautions that lower bids often come with hidden costs. “A contractor’s bid doesn’t always reflect the actual cost of the project,” he explains. “A lot of contractors will ask you what your budget is, and whatever number you give them, they’ll say, ‘Oh yeah, we can do it for that.’ However, when the job gets underway, you’ll likely find that your budget isn’t enough because the contractor didn’t account for unforeseen delays or costly details. The next thing you know, they’re adding a lot of change orders and your project’s cost is going up.”

To avoid this scenario, Mr. Gregor recommends getting bids from multiple contractors and comparing them to get a sense of what’s realistic in terms of cost and timeline. Don’t just choose the cheapest bid or the shortest timeline you’re presented with—if a contractor is promising the moon, they’re probably just trying to undercut the competition. Instead, choose a bid that provides plenty of detail and gives a reasonable price and timeline for the project. Additionally, do some research to ensure the contractor you choose has a track record for customer satisfaction and quality workmanship.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I have to pay you upfront?

A: No, we collect incremental payments as the job progresses.

Q: Should I insulate my concrete slab foundation?

A: We recommend it because it’ll enhance your comfort and home energy efficiency. The ground is extremely cold, and neglecting to insulate your foundation will allow that cold air to come into your home from below.

Q: Do you build decks with composite materials like Trex?

A: No. Composite materials are environmentally destructive—when you cut into them, bits of epoxy and plastic are released into the atmosphere. Also, composite decks aren’t recyclable, so when they get replaced, they’re just thrown into a landfill.

Q: Can you incorporate smart home technology into my remodel?

A: Yes, but the technology isn’t quite at the point where we recommend it to our clients. It has come a long way in recent years, but there always seem to be bugs and glitches, which can be frustrating for homeowners. You’re probably better off waiting a few more years until the technology catches up to the application.

I am doing a job with them currently and have used them for about 5 previous jobs already. For me, they are unique in that they are honest, and the owner wont provide any kind of phony change orders to change the price on you later. They provide excellent quality and integrity. They are about to start a smaller project for me. I have used them for a number of years now and find the owner to be a man of integrity. He is also very kind.

Trust, because with construction, you get a lot of yahoos who will take your money and leave or do something wrong and then refuse to make it right. I find them to be honest and competent, which is a rarity, so I feel lucky to have found them. My own parents were fortunate enough to have a similar experience with a contractor they found and worked with on several houses, and people were always surprised to hear that they hired the same contractor more than once. So, if you hire a contractor twice, that shows you trust them, and I trust them.

I am very satisfied with their work. They definitely paid attention to the project and listened to what we wanted. They considered our thoughts and ideas while executing the work and delivered. I would highly recommend them to others.

They were always doing the right thing for us and considering our wants for the project. They were mindful of our budget, easy to work with, personable, and I also found them to be much friendlier than other contractors.

I think that Andrew has a very artistic eye and a real workmanship approach, so that it's not just a standard building company or project. He brings more to the task than simply building.

That even though there were blueprints, Andrew went beyond just the standard things and really added a personal touch.
