Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for design/build contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Baldenebro Construction, the most effective way to keep clients happy is simple: provide better quality and customer service than its competitors. “I started this company so I could provide high-quality construction work that I’d be proud to stand behind, and that’s exactly what we do on every job,” says owner Luis Baldenebro. “We love developing relationships with our clients and seeing their satisfaction at the end of their projects.”

Baldenebro Construction has been remodeling kitchens and bathrooms, building room additions, and providing general construction services for residential clients in Marin County and San Francisco since 2015. The company utilizes its design/build capabilities to handle every step of the remodeling process in-house, and it also offers free estimates for its customers’ convenience.

Unlike contractors that take an “assembly line” approach to their clients’ projects and treat their homes primarily as work spaces, Baldenebro Construction understands that it’s working in people’s living spaces and adjusts its services accordingly. “We respect our clients’ privacy as much as possible and treat their homes with respect,” affirms Mr. Baldenebro. “Customer satisfaction is very important to us, so we do whatever it takes to keep our clients happy throughout the construction process.”

To further differentiate itself from its competition, Baldenebro Construction only hires qualified technicians who are trained to utilize industry-best techniques. “We employ a small amount of technicians so we can ensure the quality of every project,” explains Mr. Baldenebro. “Our clients know that if they need anything extra, our technicians will come back and handle it, which they really appreciate.”

Industry Info
When taking on a construction project, make sure you hire a contractor that prioritizes safety and quality.
You might expect that every construction company emphasizes the need for safety and quality work, but that’s not always the case. Contractors that hire cheap labor or unskilled workers; don’t have modern, safe equipment; or focus on quantity over quality can compromise the safety of your home and the overall quality of your job.

“Homeowners always need to be aware of unlicensed activities or contractors without liability insurance, but they should also watch out for companies that don’t have good workers,” cautions Luis Baldenebro, owner of Baldenebro Construction in San Rafael. “It’s vital for your contractor to hire qualified, manageable employees and cover them with company-funded liability and workers’ compensation insurance.”

Surprisingly, modern tools also make a difference when it comes to safety. “There are new technologies that make tools safer,” says Mr. Baldenebro. “Table saws and chop saws are now created with fire safeguards, and nail guns now have trigger safeties. These features keep workers from getting hurt as easily as they did in the past.” Fewer accidents on the job and better tools make for safer work environments, fewer insurance claims, and less possibility for property damage.

So, how can you make sure you hire a contractor that follows safety precautions and provides high-quality work? Start by talking to local companies that you’re considering. Verify their insurance and licensing. Ask about their employees and confirm all of them are skilled, experienced, trained, and covered by insurance. Ask about certifications, training, tools and materials. While brand new tools aren’t required, ask about safety mechanisms that will protect employees and your home. As always, if a contractor can’t or won’t answer your questions honestly, or if they give you answers that don’t satisfy your personal requirements, it might mean they’re not the best choice for your job.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can you work within my budget?
A: “Absolutely. We respect our clients’ finances, so once we know what your budget allows for, we’ll assess your options and help you find something you like.”

Q: Will you keep my home clean while you’re working?
A: “Yes. We’re careful while we work and clean up thoroughly at the end of each workday.”
Q: Will you attain any required building permits?
A: “Yes. Getting building permits protects us and gives our clients confidence that we’re doing the job correctly and safely.”

Q: Can you identify weight-bearing walls and beams?
A: “That’s actually the first thing we do. We usually acquire the blueprints of the house so we can see the structure and determine which sections are weight-bearing.”
Q: Will you follow building codes and local regulations?
A: “We always follow codes to protect ourselves and our clients. Most state and city permits and codes are similar, but there are a few differences based on the area in which you live, like disability codes.”

Luis Baldenebro: The Big Finish

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

After commencing his building career, Luis Baldenebro continued to advance his abilities until he reached his goal of becoming a finish carpenter. However, his greatest accomplishment was still to come. “I started out building redwood fences but I was really interested in carpentry, especially fine finish work,” he explains. “I started taking classes and joined a company in Sonoma, where I worked my way to the level of journeyman. After gaining further experience, I began to think about starting my own business. The only thing I was hesitant about was the test I had to take to get licensed; since my English wasn’t very good, I was worried I wouldn’t be able to pass it. With a lot of motivation from my wife, I started taking English classes and got to a place where I felt confident enough to take the test. I passed, got my license and soon after started my business.”

Today, as owner of Baldenebro Construction, Luis says his favorite part of his job is wowing customers with his work. “I enjoy the entire process of remodeling, but the most exciting part for me is showing the finished product to the client. I love seeing the big smile on their face when they see their newly remodeled space.”

A resident of San Rafael (where he lives with his wife, Leticia, and daughter, Nicole), Luis expresses his appreciation for life and work in the Bay Area. “I really like the environment here. We have access to so much, from the beach to the mountains to the big city. Plus, there are a lot of good opportunities for businesses.”

Outside of work, Luis engages in a variety of pastimes, from outdoor activities to reading. “I enjoy hiking and mountain biking around Marin, as well as kayaking in the bay,” he affirms. “I’m also a big reader—I read everything from Charles Dickens to modern classics like Paulo Coelho’s “The Alchemist.” Additionally, Luis likes volunteering his time to various ministries and causes in his community. “I enjoy serving and helping those in need. My wife and I are active in our church and volunteer with a youth ministry called Young Life.”

In regard to his professional career, Luis espouses the importance of building customer relationships. “Remodeling projects can be stressful for some people, especially if they don’t understand all the steps involved,” he says. “Sometimes I have to hold their hand through the process. That’s why communication and customer service are so crucial to what I do. It’s not just about building the structure—it’s about building a relationship.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Luis says he’d take a vacation. “I would go somewhere with a warm, sandy beach—maybe the Bahamas. I’d spend a couple of weeks just relaxing, reading and exploring the area.”

  • Advantages of Screws over Nails

SAN RAFAEL — There are two main types of fasteners used in building and remodeling: nails and screws. While each has its uses, screws offer a couple of significant advantages that make them preferable for many applications.

First, screws create a stronger long-term bond between wood materials. Despite being very strong, nails’ smooth, straight character makes it easier for nailed wood boards to pull apart due to expansion and contraction over time. In contrast, screws’ ridged threading creates better adhesion and makes it more difficult for wood materials to separate from each other.

Another advantage of using screws is the ease with which they can be removed and re-installed. If a board or panel needs to be removed to gain access for maintenance, screws can be easily and quickly unscrewed without causing any damage to the wood materials. Nails, on the other hand, need to be yanked out, which not only ruins the nails but can damage the wood in the process. In this way, screws reduce the likelihood of having to replace materials after the fact.

While screws offer these advantages over nails, keep in mind that both nails and screws have specific applications, so consult a building professional or manual before using either.

  • Video: Advantages of Screws

    Complete Video Transcription:

SAN RAFAEL — Host, Sarah Rutan: When it comes to fastening wood materials, there are many instances where screws are preferable to nails. Today we’re in San Rafael with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Luis Baldenebro of Baldenebro Construction to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Luis Baldenebro: Here is a tip from Baldenbro Construction. We’re using a siding, cedar. A T&G 1’x6’. It’s a tongue and groove. This is the tongue and this is the groove. We’re using it for a siding between this frame. We have a sliding door, you know, and the screen as well, that this goes into the track between this frame.

And the main reason we’re using this material, you know, just to get access in the future. So, that’s why we choose a flat head stainless steel screw. But this was the nail. You know, the screw, we’re going to be able to pull the screw with the screw gun. And be able to reduce the board back without any damage. But this is using a galvanized nail. And pulling the nail will make it damaged on the board. So, that’s why we’re using a screw. In case somebody needs to get, to replace the wheels or do any maintenance on these doors, they can get to it without making any damage. Thank you.
