Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for solar companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For All Bay Solar, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: provide every client with a full-service experience by handling every step of their solar installation projects. “We take care of everything in-house, from scheduling inspections to obtaining incentives from the State and federal government,” says Owner Carlos Aguirre. “Our full-service approach is important for maintaining positive relationships with our clients before, during and after their solar installations.”

Unlike less experienced solar companies that take a hands-off approach to interacting with their clients and don’t provide any follow-up services once their installations are complete, All Bay Solar takes a personalized approach to every project that includes educating clients about their new systems even after the initial work is done. “Solar education is very important to us,” confirms Mr. Aguirre. “When our clients have a full comprehension of what their systems do and how to use them properly, it really increases their satisfaction.”

Another distinguishing feature of All Bay Solar is its use of state-of-the-art solar products made by some of the industry’s top manufacturers, including Sharp modules, Enphase Energy microinverters and Unirac mounting hardware. “Our clients want high-quality products that will last as long as their systems, and that’s exactly what we provide,” says Mr. Aguirre. “We also believe in supporting the growing United States solar industry, so we use American-made products whenever possible.”

Industry Info

Skilled solar contractors can install solar energy systems that are both efficient and attractive. The ideas of randomly placed solar panels, stray wires and unsightly converter boxes have kept some homeowners from investing in solar power, but in reality, solar installations can be as aesthetically pleasing as any other new construction project. To find a solar contractor that can install a cost-efficient system that’s both attractive and effective, consider the following tips:

Aesthetic designs
Ask a prospective solar company if it takes aesthetic factors into account when designing and installing solar power systems. For example, solar modules can be mounted so they look more like a part of the roof and not like a big platform that’s raised above the roof. Also, roof obstructions like stacks and plumbing vents can be moved so the system is centralized in one area.

Customized components
Not every system needs the same components, so you may not have to settle for large inverter boxes mounted on the side of your home or massive panels that cover your entire roof. A good solar company will evaluate your power needs and fit the system to your requirements. By customizing your solar system’s components, you’ll save money by only installing what’s necessary, and you’ll have a more attractive design that’s free from unnecessary bulk and extra components.

Computer-assisted design
Some solar contractors offer computer-assisted design (CAD) services to ensure the panels will fit correctly on your roof and still be aesthetically pleasing. With a CAD rendering, you can see exactly how and where your solar system will be placed on your roof, which can eliminate guesswork and give you a sense of how your new system will look.

Built-in services for new construction and remodels
If you’re reroofing your home or thinking about building an addition, talk with a solar expert before finalizing your plans. Your solar provider and home improvement contractors may be able to work together to add solar panels to the renovation designs so the system becomes an integral part of your new roof or home addition. This will give the system a built-in look and can actually save money on the installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can you give me an estimate over the phone?

A: We usually don’t give proposals over the phone. We prefer to come to your home and meet with you face-to-face, which allows us to give a full presentation on the benefits of solar energy and make sure you understand the process.

Q: How long does it take to install a solar system?

A: We can usually complete an installation in one day, but sometimes it takes two.

Q: What happens after the installation?

A: We’ll have someone from the city come out and inspect the job. Once we get the system approved by the city, PG&E will interconnect it with their power grid.

Q: Is there any maintenance involved?

A: Solar panels require minimal maintenance. Primarily, you should hose them off once or twice a year to get rid of accumulated dirt and debris and ensure they’re working optimally. We’ll provide you with a meter that details the efficiency of your system. If the meter falls below 90 percent, it’s time to get out the hose.

Q: How do you attach solar panels?

A: We attach solar panels directly to the roof, which means we’ll have to make a few roof penetrations. Some people worry about leaking, but we thoroughly seal every roof to prevent that from happening.

Q: Will I still be able to have electricity at night?

A: Of course. Even though you have solar panels, you’re still connected to the PG&E power grid. If your solar power is running low, the system will simply switch to that grid and continue providing you with power.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Carlos Aguirre

Carlos Aguirre: A Solar Disposition

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Program Reporter

SAN FRANCISCO — Carlos Aguirre started his career in the electrical industry, but as he became further acquainted with a related field, he saw a brighter opportunity on the horizon. “During my 10 years in the electrical field, I got the chance to work on a few solar installations,” he explains. “I found that I really liked it and eventually decided to go into solar installation exclusively. After a year and a half of working for a local installer and learning the trade, I started my own company.”

Today, as owner of All Bay Solar, Carlos says his favorite part of his job is its doubly rewarding nature. “Working in solar gives me an opportunity to help people save money on their energy bills while also helping the environment. I think this field is pretty unique in that regard, and it’s very gratifying to know that my work has such a positive impact.”

Born in El Salvador, Carlos came to the United States at the age of 12, where he spent the remainder of his adolescent years in San Francisco’s Mission District. Today, he’s still a resident of the City by the Bay, and he expresses his appreciation for its rich, concentrated diversity. “I just love San Francisco,” he affirms. “The variety here is amazing, from the people and activities to the food. Plus, it’s all so close—you don’t even need to own a car here!”

Outside of work, Carlos devotes the bulk of his time to his family, including his wife, Lina, and daughters, Natali and Emily. “Other than playing soccer on occasion, I’m usually with my family when I’m not working,” he says. “We like doing things like taking walks through the park and hanging out at the beach.”

In regard to his professional career, Carlos says earning his customers’ trust has been critical to his success. “Most people want to know they can trust you before agreeing to do business, which is why I’m a big proponent of being honest and upfront with clients. We find that being transparent in all things enables us to earn our customers’ trust, which makes for a smoother process and greater overall satisfaction.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Carlos says he’d invest more time toward charity work. “I’d like to go back to El Salvador and help people in need. I’m currently involved in a nonprofit organization there called Achinamas that fights for people’s rights, provides food for the hungry and sets up programs to help kids stay out of trouble.”

A: Hawaii.

Q: What’s your favorite fruit?
A: Mango.

Q: What’s your favorite animal?

  • Solar Aesthetics

SAN FRANCISCO — One aspect of solar power installation that often gets overlooked is aesthetics—that is, how the system looks. That’s why, in addition to considering the functional attributes of your system, it’s important to address the visual impact it will have on your home or place of business.

One crucial consideration is the system’s layout, which determines the locations of components like panels, boxes and conduits. With proactive planning, your solar contractor can design your system to minimize the visual prominence of these components. For instance, solar modules can be mounted so they look like part of the roof rather than a conspicuous raised platform. Also, roof obstructions like stacks and plumbing vents can be relocated to allow for the system to be centralized in one area.

Another aesthetic consideration is the style of panel you choose to install. As a general rule, any time solar panels are going to be visible from the street side, it’s best to go with a low-profile option. Since they’re darker in color, low-profile panels will blend in better with your roof.

To address these and other aesthetic concerns, talk to your solar installer about your options. Remember, your solar system will be on your roof for the next 25 to 30 years, so it’s important to make sure it won’t be an eyesore.

  • Video: Solar Aesthetics

    Complete Video Transcription:

SAN FRANCISCO — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re planning to install a solar energy system, the last thing you want is for it to be an eyesore. Today we’re in San Francisco with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Carlos Aguirre of All Bay Solar to learn how to prevent this from happening.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Carlos Aguirre: One of the aspects in the solar process that gets overlooked by the solar installer and the homeowner is the aesthetic side. My tip to the homeowner is to make sure to understand what needs to take place in order to install the solar system in their home. There are two things to take into consideration.

One is the location of the equipment. What I recommend is to do a walkthrough with the solar installer to see the layout of every box, conduit, and panels on the roof.

And second, you need to consider what type of panel you are going to choose. My rule of thumb is that any time you can see the panels from the street side, you may want to consider a low profile panel. A low profile panel is dark in color and it blends with your roof. And remember, the solar panels will be on your roof for more than 25 years.
