Industry Info

When it comes to dealing with computer problems, is it better to repair or replace?

Computers and other electronic hardware can be big investments, and it’s often difficult to know when to pay for repairs/upgrades and when to simply start over. “People tend to keep their old equipment because it was expensive when they bought it years ago, but new hardware costs a lot less than it used to,” says Vladimir Galant, president of 911 PC Help in Castro Valley. “You might want to hang on to your old computer because you think it’ll be expensive to replace, but you can actually spend more fixing an old system than buying something new that works a lot better.”

When to say goodbye

Most experts agree that the average lifespan of a desktop computer is about five years and the average lifespan of a laptop is three to four years. That doesn’t sound like much, but most computers aren’t built for longevity. Here are some signs that your computer may be on its way out:

  • It no longer allows updates. This could be because the system doesn’t meet the minimum requirements for the newest software versions.
  • Warning screens and error messages pop up regularly when you restart.
  • You’re running out of RAM (Random Access Memory) space.
  • CPU usage is regularly at or above 80 percent.
  • It overheats for no obvious reason.
  • It reboots slowly or is sluggish after being turned on.
  • You experience slow performance or freezing when too many applications, browser windows, or programs are open.
  • Certain apps and games won’t run on it.
  • Newer hardware and devices (e-readers, smartphones, monitors, USB cables) won’t connect to it.
  • Repairs become more frequent and more expensive.

“Don’t throw good money at bad equipment,” cautions Mr. Galant. “If there’s any question, you should consider getting rid of your old equipment. A quality computer service company can help you with the transition and get you restarted with new hardware. You’ll be good to go with no problems for another three to five years.”

A: That depends on what you need and my current schedule. When you call, we’ll give you a time frame for how long the job will take to complete and when we can start.

Q: Can you explain what’s wrong with my computer?

A: Yes. We’re here to give you peace of mind, so we’ll explain your computer issues in language you can understand and give honest answers to your questions.

Q: Should I repair or replace my computer equipment?

A: It depends on your specific situation. A: About 85 percent of all issues can be fixed remotely. As long as your computer is operational and can connect to the internet, we can fix it and you don’t even have to move it.

Q: Can you provide an audit of my small business’ networking and computer systems?

A: Yes. We’ll look at your entire setup and find ways to save you money while maximizing the usefulness of your equipment. We can also consult on the types of systems to buy and the best ways to get them up and running.

Vladimir Galant: A Hi-Tech Career

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

CASTRO VALLEY — After more than two decades working with computer technology, Vladimir Galant is still going strong. “I started out by running an internet service provider in my home country of Lithuania,” he remembers. “It was a completely different scene in that time and place—a lot of people didn’t even know what the internet was, so it took quite a bit of courage and effort to build a company there.” In 2000, Vladimir moved to the United States to take a management position at an internet service provider in California. However, when the dot-com bubble burst just a year later, he found himself at a crossroads. “Ultimately, I decided to start working as a solo consultant. Over the last 15 years, my business has continued to grow and I now have four full-time experts working for me.”

Today, as president of 911 PC Help, Vladimir says his favorite part of his job is bringing relief to frustrated customers. “One thing I really enjoy is getting customers who have tried to get their problems resolved elsewhere and are desperate for a solution. When I’m able to fix the problem, I can see the appreciation in their eyes, which is very rewarding.”

A resident of Castro Valley, Vladimir spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “I love nature and physical exercise, so one of my favorite activities is hiking,” he details. “My favorite place to hike is Lake Chabot. I also enjoy doing yoga, going to the movies and spending time with my close friends.”

While he spends his days working with computers, Vladimir says the most important aspect of his job is working with people. “It doesn’t matter whether you work with computers or plumbing or anything else—at the end of the day, you have to serve your customers. People expect to be served well no matter what the job entails, which is why I emphasize customer service as much as quality work. Because of this, I have very high customer loyalty. In fact, the majority of clients I’ve served over the years are still with me today.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What kinds of movies do you like?

A: I like movies that portray situations and contain lessons that can be applied to one’s own life.

Q: What are some of your favorite movies?

A: “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” “The Godfather” and “Heat.”

Q: Are you an early bird or a night owl?

A: An early bird.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

A: Japan.

Q: What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

A: It’s a tie between Japanese food and Indian food.

  • What to Do When Liquid Spills on Your Laptop

CASTRO VALLEY — When liquid spills on your laptop, knowing how to react can make all the difference. If the computer is asleep/turned off, your initial instinct may be to wake it up/turn it on to see if it still works. In reality, this is the worst thing you can do. If there’s liquid on the motherboard, turning it on can cause a short and damage your hard drive.

The best thing to do after liquid spills on your laptop is shut it off immediately. It’s also a good idea to disconnect the AC adapter and remove the battery. Next, turn the laptop upside down and let it sit to dry. If it’s just a water spill, you can (carefully) use a hair dryer to speed up the drying. Ideally, you should let your laptop dry for two or three days before turning it on. In most cases, it’ll work fine.

If the spilled liquid is sticky (soda, coffee with creamer), the damage may be more severe. In this case, I recommend taking your laptop to a computer service company to get its data backed up.

  • The Best Cyber Security Tool

CASTRO VALLEY — One of the biggest concerns with computers today is security. Everyone wants to protect their computers, network, and data against malicious hackers and viruses. The question is, what’s the best cyber security tool?

There are many cyber security tools available on the market today, including antivirus software and network appliances. With the additional assurance they provide, these tools can certainly be worth investing in. However, there’s one tool that’s just as reliable and costs you nothing: common sense.

Not even a good antivirus software can protect against poor user choices. After all, what’s the point of having a lock on your door when you open it for anyone who knocks? If you regularly click on anonymous links without thinking twice, that’s essentially what you’re doing. Merely clicking the wrong link can open the door for hackers and viruses to access your computer or network. That’s why the best cyber security protection is simply to use common sense when clicking on links. Slow down and take a few moments to read the situation—otherwise, you could wind up spending a lot of time and money on fixing problems.

  • Video: The Best Cyber Security Tool

    Complete Video Transcription:

CASTRO VALLEY — Host, Sarah Rutan: Want to know the best tool for protecting your computer and network? You might be surprised to hear the answer. Today we’re in Castro Valley with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Vladimir Galant of 911 PC Help to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Vladimir Galant: The most common concern nowadays is security. Cyber security. Your data security. Your computer security. Your network security. And all of you probably asking question, what is the best tool? What is the best software? What is the best remedy? Yes, you can rely on software. You can rely on different network appliances – which is costly. But the most reliable tool is yourself. Is your common sense. Because no one and nothing can protect against yourself. When you click on something you don’t know, when on some windows which popping up, you click okay. You don’t know what’s going on. But literally, you let invaders into your computer, into your network.

So, the tip is: do not open what you don’t understand what it is. Do not blind-fully click okay, next. Pay attention. Spend five, ten seconds to read what it is about. Otherwise, you will spend hours and hundreds of thousand dollars to fix it. So, use common sense. That’s the best cyber security tool for you today.

  • Video: Dealing With a Spill on Your Laptop

    Complete Video Transcription:

CASTRO VALLEY — Host, Sarah Rutan: When liquid spills on your laptop, knowing what to do can help you prevent a potential catastrophe. Today we’re in Castro Valley with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Vladimir Galant of 911 PC Help to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Vladimir Galant: Sometimes it happens, and you spill something on your laptop. What to do? I know your first intention is to turn it on, see if it works. Please don’t. Shut it off immediately. Disconnect from the AC adapter. Remove the battery if possible. Turn it upside down and let it dry. Maybe you can use hair dryer if the liquid you spilled is not sweet and sticky. If it’s sticky, you need to go us or any other company to have your data out of it. Then let it dry day two or three. The more the better. And then try to turn it on. Most of the time, it will be working fine. But please, do not turn it on right after you spill something because it will get it short. Your motherboard will get short. Your hard drive can be damaged, and your laptop can be ruined.
