Zviki Govrin: A Kibbutz State of Mind

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

MILL VALLEY — Originally from Israel, Zviki Govrin spent many years running a kibbutz (a self-sufficient community where everything is shared collectively), which gave him a unique perspective later when he took over his father-in-law’s home improvement business. “I married the daughter of one of the founders of Goodman Building Supply, so I’m part of the family,” he explains. “After Dove and I got married, we continued to live in Israel for 16 years, where I was a chicken farmer and ran a kibbutz. In the early ’90s, my father-in-law bought his partner’s share of the business, and in 1995, we came to the United States to help run things. By 1999, I was running the entire business, and I’m still doing it today.”

Today, as owner of Goodman Building Supply, Zviki says he likes being in an industry that’s so vital to everyday life. “If you own a house, there’s always something that has to be done, which is where we come in. Owning a home is a big part of the American Dream, so I like the fact that we’re connected to such an important part of life here. It’s a lot more rewarding than selling chocolate or something.”

A resident of Terra Linda, Zviki expresses his appreciation for life in the Bay Area. “First of all, the weather is wonderful. Everywhere else in the world, the weather is either too hot or too cold, but here it’s perfect. Also, I love basketball, and with the Warriors doing so well these past few years, it has been an exciting time to be a fan in the Bay Area.”

Basketball is just one of many pastimes that Zviki enjoys in his free time. “My wife and I do a lot of traveling—not just to Israel, but all over the world,” he says. “We usually travel with my brother and his wife, and during the last few years we’ve been everywhere from South Africa to Iceland to China.” Zviki also enjoys reading and goes dancing with his wife every week. Furthermore, he likes to stay in touch with his three grown children, two of whom live in Israel and one of whom lives in Austin, Texas.

In regard to a professional philosophy, Zviki says his experience of running a kibbutz has informed his management style. “In a kibbutz, everything is shared and everyone is equal, whereas in a typical business setting, there’s a hierarchy and the employees are kept in the dark about things. When I took over ownership of Goodman Building Supply, I wanted to incorporate a bit of the kibbutz spirit by bringing what I call ‘open book management.’ Basically, this consists of creating a transparent environment where employees are more directly involved in company matters and share the rewards if the company does well. Since taking this approach, I’ve found our employees are happier and more invested in our success. In short, our business feels more like a family—like a kibbutz, even.”

When asked what he would do if he were to retire tomorrow, Zviki says he’d spend more time doing the things he currently enjoys. “I would travel more, read more—whatever I like to do, I’d continue doing it as long as my health allows. I’d also ask my kids to make more grandchildren. As of now, I have one, while my brother has 17. I know I’m never going to beat him, but if I can get at least five, I’ll be happy.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite sports team?
A: I’ve been a Los Angeles Lakers fan most of my life, but at some point they stopped being fun to watch, so I’ve defected to the Golden State Warriors.

Q: Coffee or tea?
A: Coffee. I’m a coffee junkie. I have all kinds of coffee makers—I even have a portable one in my car so I can make an espresso on the road if I have to!

Q: What kinds of books do you like to read?
A: Mainly comedies and thrillers. On the comedy side, my favorite author is Dave Barry. On the thriller side, I like Michael Connelly and Harlan Coben.

Q: Do you collect anything?
A: I used to collect stamps when I was a kid, but nowadays I collect gadgets, especially new things that come onto the market. I like going to trade shows and browsing crowdfunding websites like Kickstarter to find the latest innovative products.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
A: Fruit salad with fruit yogurt on top and a sandwich.

  • What To Ask References
Questions to Ask References of a Home Improvement Center in Marin County

It’s best to choose a Diamond Certified home improvement center because all certified companies have passed an in-depthratings processthat most other companies can’t pass. If you want quality from a home improvement center in Marin County and the greater Bay Area, you can have confidence choosing a Diamond Certified company. Diamond Certified reports are available online for all certified companies. And you’ll never be fooled by fake reviews. That’s because all research is performed in live telephone interviews of actual customers.

If you can’t find a Diamond Certified home improvement center within reach, you’ll have to do some research on your own. If you do, it’s wise to call some references provided by your home improvement center. Keep in mind, though, that references provided to you by the home improvement center are not equal in value to the large random sample of customers surveyed during the Diamond Certified ratings process. That’s because references given to customers from companies are cherry-picked instead of randomly selected from all their customers. So the contractors will likely give you a few customers to call that they know are satisfied.

If you do call references on your own, specifically ask for a list of the company’s 10 most recent customers. This will help avoid them giving you the names of only customers they know were satisfied.

    • Were you satisfied with the service from the home improvement center?
    • Could you communicate well with your home improvement center representatives and workers?
    • Were you pleased with the quality of work this home improvement center provided?
    • Were you happy with the home improvement center’s business practices?
    • Did the home improvement center crew show up for work on time?
    • Were you comfortable with the subcontractors that were hired by the home improvement center?
    • Did the home improvement center meet the timeline that they agreed to?
    • If you need other home improvement products or work in the future, will you consider going back to this home improvement center again?
    • What type of home improvement products or work did you purchase from this home improvement center?
    • Would you recommend this home improvement center to your family and friends?
    • Does your home improvement center have any references that I may contact?

  • How To Work With
Before You Choose a Home Improvement Center in Marin County

After you have found a Marin County home improvement center that you can trust, you will have peace of mind as you get ready for your home improvement project. Once you’ve found a home improvement center in Marin County, you will have an initial meeting between you and the representative to discuss your requirements for your home improvement project. The representative will help you with an estimate of the project and its feasibility. Furthermore, you will discuss the budget and design of the home improvement project as well as any restrictions that apply and permits that will be needed.

The estimate should include an itemized list of the cost of supplies and it will include the labor if there is labor included. Be sure to get all estimates in writing before any work begins. Don’t ever sign a blank estimate. If you are just buying supplies from your home improvement center, there will not be a contract.

Use the notes that you have taken so you can accurately describe any concerns that you have. Be very detailed and don’t be in a rush. It is as important for you to hear their suggestions and observations as it is for them to hear you. If you don’t understand something, ask questions. Your home improvement center representative should be able to help explain the home improvement work so that you understand the process of what the job entails.

Committing to a Marin County Home Improvement Center
When you feel satisfied with the information you have received from your Marin County home improvement center, you are ready to sign the contract. Be sure that they have a phone number where you can be reached at all times. Once the contract is drawn up, it should be signed by both parties: you and the home improvement center representative.

You contract should include the following:

    • Home improvement center’s name, physical address, mailing address and phone.
    • Any oral or verbal promises the home improvement center representative made.
    • How “change orders” will be handled. Any changes or additions to the project should be written up in the contract so that the conditions for change are pre-determined.
    • Furthermore, the contract should list how and when payment will be made for adjustments.
    • The estimate or quote of the project.
    • Detailed materials list: product, size, color, type, model, and brand name. Any additional or alternate materials that may be used if necessary should also be listed.
    • Warranties should be written and the length of time as well as limitations should be covered. Warranties should cover materials and workmanship, and names and addresses of the warrantor. This may include the contractor, manufacturer, and distributor.

  • Be a Good Customer
Keys to Being a Good Home Improvement Center Customer

It’s the home improvement center’s responsibility to put in quality home improvement products using the best possible installation techniques. But you play a big part in the success of your home improvement products, too. Here are a few simple steps you can take to be a good customer when choosing a Marin County home improvement center.

    • Be clear and upfront with the home improvement center. Let them know what you want from your home improvement products, the long-term outcome you’re expecting and specific ways they can satisfy your expectations.
    • Be sure your service representative has a phone number where they can reach you at all times while they’re involved with your home improvement project. The work will move along more smoothly if your home improvement center can reach you for any necessary updates, questions or work authorizations.
    • When your representative contacts you, return calls promptly to keep the home improvement center on schedule.
    • Pay for the home improvement work promptly.
    • Remember, a friendly smile goes a long way!
    • Ask your home improvement center if you should call to check on your order or if he will call you with updates.
    • Before you choose a home improvement center in Marin County, restate your expectations and goals, and reiterate to the home improvement center representative your understanding of the agreement. Most problems with local home improvement centers occur because of a breakdown in communication. By being clear about your expectations and theirs you can avoid most conflicts.

Why would you want to be a good customer? Home improvement centers in Marin County appreciate customers who are straightforward, honest and easy to work with. Your good customer behavior sets the tone from your end and creates an environment conducive to a good relationship. Things may very well go smoother and any problems may be more easily resolved.

Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions for Local Home Improvement Warehouses

Q: Why choose a Diamond Certified home improvement center?
A: Diamond Certified helps you choose a home improvement center with confidence by offering a list of top-rated local companies who have passed the country’s most in-depth rating process. Only home improvement centers rated Highest in Quality earn the prestigious Diamond Certified award. Most companies can’t pass the ratings. American Ratings Corporation also monitors every Diamond Certified company with ongoing research and ratings. And your purchase is backed by the Diamond Certified Performance Guarantee. So you’ll feel confident choosing a Diamond Certified home improvement center.

Q: Will there be any hidden charges after I have been quoted a price?
A: When you are quoted a price, that is the price you will pay. Diamond Certified home improvement centers believe in being up front and honest. They will not hide any charges. However, there is no home improvement center representative who can determine if you have any “hiding problems” in your home.

For instance, if you have rotting framing that isn’t obvious to you, a good home improvement center will not just cover the rotting framing. Instead, you should be given the opportunity to see the problems and make a decision on what repairs you need to have done. There should be no surprise charges that you have not been fully made aware of and that you have not authorized to have the work done.

Q: What qualities should I look for in a home improvement center?
A: The success of your home improvement project can be determined by choosing the right home improvement center. You want to find a home improvement center that has employees who have construction and technical knowledge. They will then understand your project and the issues that may come up. They will be able to help you with the specifications of your job and help you with the products and materials you will need. The right home improvement center can make your experience positive and something that you enjoy.

You also want to look for good customer service and communication. It is important that your home improvement center representative listen to you and your needs. They should be able to answer your questions or find you a source for answering them. You also want your home improvement center representative to show enthusiasm for your home improvement project. You want a home improvement center that emphasizes customer service.

Q: Should I ask for a written contract?
A: Good home improvement centers always work with written contracts. A written contract will ensure that you are getting what you paid for such as the product and installation. If there have been any verbal agreements, be sure those are added to the written contract. You want to be sure your home improvement products and work are documented clearly so you can see the cost up front.

Q: Can I trust the home improvement center workers that will be working in my home?
A: That depends on which home improvement center you choose, as employee trustworthiness and attention to detail varies depending on hiring practices and training.
