Being proactive about both at-home and professional cleanings can go a long way toward preventing the kinds of problems that require treatment.

The reason dental hygiene is important is simple: Your mouth is basically a breeding ground for bacteria, and having an abundance of oral bacteria can cause maladies such as cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. The best way to combat bacteria and keep your mouth healthy is to clean your teeth regularly and thoroughly.

Preventative dental hygiene starts at home with your brushing and flossing habits. You should brush your teeth a minimum of once a day, but two to three times is preferable for maintaining healthy teeth and gums, as well as fresh breath. Flossing on a daily basis is equally important, as a toothbrush is unable to reach in between the teeth, where food often becomes lodged.

While good cleaning habits at home are the cornerstone of dental hygiene, it’s also important to augment your own efforts with professional cleanings. You should have your teeth cleaned and examined by a dentist at least twice a year, but depending on the condition of your oral health, you may need to schedule visits on a more recurrent basis.

Use Diamond Certified Resource to find top rated companies.

Local, Top Rated Diamond Certified Practices Related to Your Topic
Alameda County Dentists
Contra Costa County Dentists

Related Articles
The Essential Guide to Dentists
Get Expert Advice From Owners of Top Rated Local Companies
Become a Diamond Certified Preferred Member (Always Free)
