Exploring California’s Farmers Markets

It wasn’t even peak produce season yet, but all kinds of fresh, organic fruits and vegetable were on display, along with lots of homemade goodies. There was a dried mushroom vendor selling candy cane mushrooms, handmade potholders and hand-painted cowboy hats. An eight-piece band performed and kids were having their faces painted. It was a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.</p> <p>California is blessed with an abundance of farmers markets throughout the state. In Monterey County alone, there are 16 certified markets. You can find one operating almost any day of the week, some all year-round. I was surprised to learn that San Francisco has 14 markets when I viewed the California Department of Food and Agriculture’s complete list that was updated in April 2024. <a href="https://www.cdfa.ca.gov/is/docs/CurrentMrktsCounty.pdf" target="_self">Here’s a link</a> in case you want to find one in your neighborhood or you’re visiting another city in California.</p> <p>I highly recommend visiting the nighttime farmers markets in both downtown Monterey and San Luis Obispo.
