Dr. Michael Temkin: A Lean Livelihood

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN RAMON — When asked what led him to become a physician, Dr. Michael Temkin says it stemmed from a family influence. “Growing up, most of my extended family members were physicians, including my uncle, who was my mentor,” he remembers. “One thing that struck me about being a physician was you had to have a breadth of knowledge and get to know your patients on a deep level. I saw how my relatives were respected in their communities and how their patients appreciated them, and it really inspired me to follow that path.”

After completing medical school, Dr. Temkin took the uncommon route of becoming a solo practitioner. “I decided early on that I didn’t want to join a medical group or work for a big corporation; rather, I wanted to run my own practice,” he explains. “So, in April of 2000, I literally hung a shingle and opened my doors. I started with zero patients and slowly built my practice over the next 16 years. Now, I have thousands of patients.”

Today, Dr. Temkin says his favorite part of his job is restoring his patients’ health through weight loss. “So many health problems are weight-related, from high blood pressure and cholesterol to sleep apnea and diabetes. By helping my patients lose weight, I’m often able to help them reverse these kinds of issues and get off of medication. There’s no greater reward than seeing a patient lose weight, become more active and basically get their life back.”

A resident of Alamo (where he lives with his wife, Heidi, and their three children), Michael expresses his fondness for the Bay Area setting. “I was born and raised here, and I still love it. My family and I enjoy doing outdoor activities, so it’s the perfect place for us. We love spending time at the coast, hiking in the mountains, going snow skiing in winter, and waterskiing and wakeboarding in summer.”

In regard to his professional career, Dr. Temkin believes in treating patients the way he’d want to be treated. “Relationships are key in health care,” he affirms. “When your patients feel they can trust you, that’s an important building block, both for achieving their treatment goals and maintaining a successful practice.”

  • What To Ask References
Learn About the Experiences of Contra Costa County Non-Surgical Liposuction Clinic Clients

For medically-sensitive procedures such as non-invasive liposuction alternatives, it may be hard to get a list of references from your practitoner. And even if they can give you a list of patients, it will only be patients that have agreed to act as references, which skews the sample and won’t give you a complete view of the doctors, the clinic, or the outcomes you may expect.

That’s just one reason that it’s best to choose a Diamond Certified non-surgical liposuction services. Another is because all certified companies have passed an in-depth ratings process that most other companies can’t pass. If you want quality from non-surgical liposuction services in Contra Costa County and the greater Bay Area, you can have confidence choosing a Diamond Certified company. That’s because references given to patients must respect patient confidentiality, so they can’t be randomly selected from the fat removal clinic’s patient database. Instead, you’ll only get a list of patients who have agreed to serve as references, and they will likely be satisfied patients with very good outcomes.

Still, talking with former patients can give you a different view of the Contra Costa County non-surgical liposuction facility, their staff and doctors, and what other patients experienced there. So it may be worth your time to talk with a few of the references you’re given.

Here are some questions you may want to ask.

  • How To Work With
Contra Costa County Non-Surgical Liposuction Clinics Want to Work With You

Clinics and facilities that offer non-invasive liposuction alternatives in Contra Costa County, including those in Concord, Richmond, Antioch, Walnut Creek and Pittsburg and your area, offer different treatments, specialties, equipment, and services. So it’s up to you to find the right doctor and fat reduction treatment for your needs and expectations. Medical care isn’t a one-size-fits-all arena, and you deserve a doctor and knifeless liposuction options that best fit you.

While non-surgical liposuction is known for its safer approach and faster recovery times, it’s still important that you find a certified, licensed doctor who understands their craft and takes the time to tailor their procedures and services to your needs.

First, you’ll want to look for the same characteristics from a non-surgical liposuction provider as you would from any other medical professional. Only entrust your body and health to a licensed, professional doctor. Board-certified doctors have passed board exams and proven knowledge in their arena. Ask Contra Costa County non-surgical liposuction providers for proof of license and certification.

You should also find a doctor that specializes in non-surgical fat removal and, in particular, the type of non-invasive treatment you’re considering. The variety of options—cryolipolysis (freezing), ultrasound, light waves and laser liposuction treatments, and radiofrequency liposuction—can be overwhelming for some doctors, so many practice and excel in only certain kinds of non-invasive liposuction alternative treatments.

Seek out the most qualified and caring practitioner, not a salesperson. Make sure your doctor is willing and able to discuss your options, goals and questions. Don’t feel pressured to have the procedure done, and don’t let any doctor push you into treatments or decisions. If you don’t feel comfortable with the doctor, the clinic staff, the treatments being offered, or any other part of your decision, keep researching.

It’s also important to note that non-invasive alternatives to liposuction and non-surgical body contouring services should be provided by a medical doctor at a medical facility. Only a licensed medical professional should provide the treatments, and you should be under the care and guidance of a licensed medical professional before, during, and after your treatments.

Side effects and complications are rare if the treatments are done correctly, but it’s vital to only trust your health and wellbeing to a certified, licensed doctor. For your own safety and for the best outcome possible, never undergo medical treatments, even non-surgical liposuction or fat removal, in your own home, at a home-based party, or in a facility that is not part of a medical center or clinic or attended by a licensed doctor.

Now That You’ve Found a Good Non-Surgical Liposuction Program
Once you’ve found the Contra Costa County non-surgical liposuction provider and non-invasive fat removal treatment that’s best for you, you’ll want to schedule your treatment and discuss all of the details with your doctor.

Ensure that you know the number and timing of treatments (some knifeless liposuction options such as laser lipo, Cool Sculpting, ultrasound lipo, and thermage treatments require more than one visit), and sit down with the doctor who will do the procedure to talk about preparation for the work. Find out if there is anything you need to do, then get answers to any final questions you might have.

Then get your procedure on the schedule and get ready for your new body.

How to Solve Misunderstandings with Contra Costa County Non-Surgical Liposuction Clinics
No matter your reason for having non-invasive liposuction done, and regardless of which clinic or doctor has provided the services, even the best patients and doctors sometimes find themselves at odds. If you’re having a disagreement with your Contra Costa County liposuction alternative provider, there are a few things you can do to end the miscommunication quickly.

  • If you’re experiencing any adverse medical effects or physical problems, seek medical attention immediately. If the problem is not emergent, make an appointment right away with your Contra Costa County non-surgical liposuction provider. If they can’t see you right away or if your symptoms are urgent, visit your primary care practitioner or the emergency room/urgent care.

  • If you can’t get an answer or resolution from your doctor or staff, ask to talk with the clinic owner or head doctor.
  • Write down and photograph (if possible) your complaints or concerns. Keep a written record of when you spoke with your Contra Costa County fat removal provider, what your concerns were, and how they addressed the issue.
  • Document any physical problems resulting from your treatment or non-invasive liposuction alternative treatment. If you have doctors reports, keep those as well.
  • Set a firm deadline for resolution of your issues, and hold the clinic to that date.
  • Report any egregious concerns to the California State Attorney General and other licensing boards. This can include any physical, emotional, or other damage caused by negligence or incompetent advice and treatments.

Most Popular Non-Surgical Liposuction and Diet Systems in Contra Costa County

There is a variety of options for fat removal without surgery, including non-invasive liposuction, in Pleasant Hill, Concord, Martinez, Richmond and Brentwood and other parts of Contra Costa County. The following are some of the most popular requests of non-surgical liposuction clinics.

Talk with your doctor about the best treatments and services for your needs and goals.

Liposuction Without Surgery
Individuals with unwanted areas of body fat, particularly body fat that is resistant to diet and exercise, and who can’t or don’t want to undergo surgical treatment or traditional liposuction may look to liposuction without surgery

Laser Fat Removal Services in Contra Costa County
Lasers are used in this treatment to target areas on the body. The laser rays penetrate the skin and help dissolve fat beneath the surface. Laser treatments are popular because they are painless, have very little risk, generally don’t require any kind of anesthesia or medication, require little in the terms of recovery, and have been shown to be effective. They also tend to be more affordable than some other non-surgical liposuction alternatives.

Mesotherapy
Mesotherapy is a technique designed to dissolve body fat through injections of amino acids and other medications into the mesoderm, or middle layer of skin. Mesotherapy can be used to treat body fat and cellulite, and is often recommended for hips, upper arms, thighs, legs, belly, back and chin. The results take time to fully develop.

Accent Body Contouring
Body contouring is any procedure that changes the shape of the body including surgical and non-surgical methods. Some body contouring options available in Concord, Richmond, Antioch, Walnut Creek and Pittsburg and the rest of Contra Costa County help with fat loss, weight loss, or toning in certain problem areas such as the torso, back, belly, upper arms, thighs and legs, buttocks, chin/face and other areas with unwanted fat deposits.

Lipodissolve Services in Contra Costa County
Lipodissolve is a minimally invasive fat dissolving procedure that can remove fat and lessen the appearance of fat under the skin. Lipodissolve involves chemical injections under the skin. These injections break down fat and allow the body to expel the dissolved fat compounds. These injections are given at the site where fat removal is wanted, such as upper arms, back, hips, belly, thighs, chin and “spare tire” areas. Lipodissolve requires multiple injections given over several weeks, and they’re given using microneedles. Results may take up to three months to fully show.

Cryolipolysis (Cool Sculpting)
Also known as cryolipolysis, cool sculpting destroys fat cells through freezing. It is one of the first and only FDA-approved non-surgical treatments for fat loss of the waist, hips, thighs and flanks. There is mild to no discomfort during and after treatments, and anesthetic is rarely used with cryolipolysis or CoolSculpting. Most patients see a reduction of 20 to 25 percent within three months of treatments.

Non-Invasive Body Contouring
Non-surgical non-invasive body contouring techniques and liposuction alternatives include laser therapies, lipolysis devices, cryolipolysis or freezing, and other body contouring methods are those that don’t require surgical methods to remove fat from the body. While most aren’t as effective as liposuction and don’t give immediate results, they are a viable alternative for people who can’t or don’t want to undergo traditional liposuction.

Ultrasonic Fat Removal
Ultrasonic therapies are non-surgical alternatives to liposuction that use ultrasound rays to melt fat and cellulite. Patients have found the best results by having ultrasonic therapies on their thighs and abdomen areas. Ultrasound methods are painless, safe and don’t require anesthetics or injections. There is little to no recovery time, and results can be seen within weeks.

Thermage Liposuction Alternatives in Contra Costa County
Thermage is a non-invasive liposuction alternative that has been shown to be effective for melting body fat. Most doctors agree that non-surgical liposuction gives some results to most patients, but that it isn’t as effective as traditional liposuction. However, for some patients, non-invasive and non-surgical techniques are preferred to surgical and traditional liposuction.

Q: What is the recovery period for nonsurgical liposuction?
A: That depends on the procedure. Many non-invasive fat removal techniques will allow you to go back to work or your normal schedule immediately after the procedure. There may be some discomfort, but most non-surgical liposuction techniques have minimal recovery period required. Some may require patients to wear shaping garments or take other precautions. Talk with your doctor before and after your procedure about your specific recovery.

Q: When will I start to see results?
A: The method of fat removal will dictate when you will see results. Most non-surgical liposuction techniques require a recovery period of several weeks to months before you see complete results. Talk with your doctor about the expected time for recuperation and results.

Q: What is the cost for non-surgical lipo and other non-surgical fat removal services?
A: Non-surgical liposuction, laser lipo, cool lipo and other non-invasive fat removal services vary in cost based on your location, the medical center or doctor who provides the services, and the service you choose. The number and extent of treatments will also impact the cost. Small areas and minimal treatments can cost a few hundred dollars, while larger areas and more intensive treatments or those that need multiple applications can cost about as much as traditional liposuction. It’s important to know your budget, know if your insurance will cover any of the costs, and get a full cost breakdown from your prospective doctor before you make any decisions. As with other medical treatments, non-surgical lipo treatments are an investment in your health and appearance, and only you and your doctor can decide the right course of action for you.

Q: Who can provide non-surgical liposuction services?
A: Non-invasive alternatives to liposuction and non-surgical body contouring services should be provided by a medical doctor at a medical facility. Even though the treatments aren’t surgical or invasive in nature, only a licensed medical professional should provide the treatments, and you should be under the care and guidance of a licensed medical professional during and after your treatments. Side effects and complications are rare if the treatments are done correctly, but it’s vital to only trust your health and wellbeing to a certified, licensed doctor. For your own safety, never undergo medical treatments, even non-surgical liposuction or fat removal, in your own home, at a home-based party, or in a location that is not part of a medical center or clinic or attended by a licensed doctor.

Q: What should I look for in a non-surgical liposuction doctor?
A: You’ll want to look for the same characteristics from your non-surgical liposuction provider as you would from any other medical professional. First, only entrust your body and health to a licensed, professional doctor. Board-certified doctors have passed their board exams and have proven knowledge in their arena. Ask for and expect to see proof of license and certification. You should also find a doctor that specializes in non-surgical fat removal and, in particular, the type of non-invasive treatment you’re considering. You want to be one of many happy patients, not a test subject. Marketing hype can be bring in patients, but you want to look for a qualified and caring practitioner, not a salesperson. Make sure your doctor is willing and able to discuss your options, goals and questions. Don’t feel pressured to have the procedure done, and don’t let your doctor push you into treatments or decisions you’re not ready for. If you don’t feel comfortable with the doctor, the clinic staff, or any other part of your decision, keep researching.

Q: Who is a good candidate for non-surgical liposuction?
A: Good candidates for non-surgical liposuction are those within safe age, weight, and medical parameters. Some doctors require proof of healthy weight patterns (not gaining and losing weight frequently) or weight loss maintenance before performing non-surgical liposuction services. Some also require a certain BMI or percentage of body fat or composition. Drug allergies, sensitivities, skin elasticity, medical conditions and other factors are also considered. Talk with local nonsurgical liposuction providers near you to ensure that you fit their requirements for less-invasive fat removal and body contouring procedures.

Q: Why might I choose non-surgical liposuction options?
A: Liposuction is a surgical procedure; like all surgical procedures, it comes with some risks. Some people want to forgo these risks and choose instead a non-surgical fat loss option. Other individuals who have drug allergies or anesthesia sensitivities may not be good candidates for traditional liposuction. Many liposuction alternatives don’t require anesthesia and have different medication and anesthetic requirements than do surgical treatments.
