The following terms and definitions can help you better understand non-surgical alternatives to liposuction and can help you better communicate with your doctor or dermatologist. As always, discuss with a medical professional any questions and terms you don’t understand.
Body contouring is any procedure that changes the shape of the body including surgical and non-surgical methods. Some body contouring options help with fat loss, weight loss, or toning in certain problem areas such as the torso, back, belly, upper arms, thighs and legs, buttocks, chin/face and other areas with unwanted fat deposits.
Also known as: body shape contouring, body fat loss, body sculpting, non-surgical body contouring, ultrasonic fat reduction, non-invasive liposuction methods
Also known as cryolipolysis, coolsculpting destroys fat cells through freezing. It is one of the first and only FDA-approved non-surgical treatments for fat loss of the waist, hips, thighs and flanks. There is mild to no discomfort during and after treatments, and anesthetic is rarely used with cryolipolysis or CoolSculpting. Most patients see a reduction of 20 to 25 percent within three months of treatments.

laser fat removal
Lasers are used in this treatment to target areas on the body. The laser rays penetrate the skin and help dissolve fat beneath the surface. Laser treatments are popular because they are painless, have very little risk, generally don’t require any kind of anesthesia or medication, require little in the terms of recovery, and have been shown to be effective. They also tend to be more affordable than some other non-surgical liposuction alternatives.
Also known as: LASER fat dissolving, laser body contouring, laser lipo, non-invasive laser lipo
Lipodissolve is a minimally invasive fat dissolving procedure that can remove fat and lessen the appearance of fat under the skin. Lipodissolve involves chemical injections under the skin. These injections break down fat and allow the body to expel the dissolved fat compounds. These injections are given at the site where fat removal is wanted, such as upper arms, back, hips, belly, thighs, chin and “spare tire” areas. Lipodissolve requires multiple injections given over several weeks, and they’re given using microneedles. Results may take up to three months to fully show.
Also known as: injection liposuction, fat dissolving injections, liposuction without surgery
Lipotherapy is a preferred method for very small and specific areas, such as the face and chin, and other areas that have small fat deposits.
Also known as: small area liposuction alternative
massage therapies for fat loss
While massage isn’t the same as liposuction or non-surgical alternatives to liposuction, some massage therapists specialize in massage techniques to reduce cellulite and provide body contouring for areas including thighs, buttocks, waist and back. It’s believed that the enhanced blood circulation and tissue manipulation can shape body areas and improve blood flow, skin texture and skin tone.
Also known as: lipomassage, Vela-Shape, massage for weight loss, massage for fat loss
Medicinal injections claim to remove cellulite in certain small areas, such as the chin and the face, that don’t have a lot of other fat deposits. Small injections are given in specific areas which loosen fat and allow the body to expel it. These areas may need several injections and it can take several weeks to see results.
Also known as: cellulite removal injections
Mesotherapy is a technique designed to dissolve body fat through injections of amino acids and other medications into the mesoderm, or middle layer of skin. Mesotherapy can be used to treat body fat and cellulite, and is often recommended for hips, upper arms, thighs, legs, belly, back and chin. The results take time to fully develop.
radio frequency wave fat removal
Radio frequency waves are sometimes used to liquefy and melt body fat, which can then be expelled from the body.
Also known as: RF waves, RF Wave therapy
Thermage is a non-invasive liposuction alternative that has been shown to be effective for melting body fat. It also has added benefits, including boosting collagen levels which can result in firmer skin that has more elasticity and better overall skin tone. Thermage is recommended for people who have at least moderate levels of skin elasticity and who are looking for results in their faces, chins and necks.

ultrasonic fat removal
Ultrasonic therapies are non-surgical alternatives to liposuction that use ultrasound rays to melt fat and cellulite. Patients have found the best results by having ultrasonic therapies on their thighs and abdomen areas. Ultrasound methods are painless, safe and don’t require anesthetics or injections. There is little to no recovery time, and results can be seen within weeks.
Also known as: ultrasound fat removal, ultrasound therapies for fat reduction, ultrasound liposuction alternative
VelaShape is a method that combines infrared light and radio frequency waves with massage via a vacuum device to provide non-surgical and non-invasive removal of fat.
Also known as: RF fat loss, radio frequency wave fat removal
wraps for fat loss
Body wraps, including seaweed wraps, mineral wraps, chemical wraps, polymer wraps and others are non-invasive and non-medical approaches to non-surgical liposuction alternatives. Various wraps function in different ways, but most claim to detoxify and tone skin and help with fat loss by allowing the body to absorb minerals, chemicals or other substances into the skin and into the fat deposits in order to melt the fat deposits.
Also known as: body fat wraps, skinny wraps, weight loss wraps, seaweed wraps, mineral wraps for weight loss, liposuction alternative body wraps
