The following terms and definitions are those used by local aviation services and private aircraft FBOs.
Most FBOs offer aircraft fuel and refueling services. In many cases, local FBOs advertise fuel prices and have access to popular fuel contract programs and incentive programs that benefit clients. Some aircraft refueling stations may offer rebates or waivers on fuel fees, and loyalty programs can provide points for fuel rebates or other benefits and merchandise.

Along with MRO services, many aviation service locations also provide aircraft servicing that includes lavatory emptying, refueling, aircraft cleaning and detailing, water tank refilling, and other maintenance and inspections.

Some flight crews and pilots need to leave their aircraft for several hours or days, depending on the purpose of their trip. So local aviation services may provide aircraft parking, tie-downs, and even hangars where airplanes and other aircraft can be left while the passengers are on the ground.

A fixed base operator, or FBO, is a company that operates at a local airport or runs a private airport that provides aeronautical services to private flights, business planes, and other individual aircraft. Services at local FBOs include airplane refueling, aircraft hangers, aircraft parking, airplane tie-down, aircraft rental, aircraft maintenance (MRO services), flight instruction and pilot training, concierge services, and more.

Some local aviation services, FBOs and MROs have concierge services available. This may include providing ground transportation (including rental vehicles and chauffeurs), hotel and other accommodations reservations, catering or restaurant reservations, laundry, entertainment tickets, and more. Not all FBOs and aviation services have concierge services available, and some have limited services, so call ahead if you need something specific or are looking for an FBO with a concierge desk.

flight crew amenities
Flight attendants, pilots, and flight crews are more likely than passengers to spend time at FBOs or aviation service locations. For this reason, many private airfields, FBOs, and flight service locations offer flight crew amenities. These may include lounges, restaurants or refreshments, kitchens, flight-planning rooms, computers, weather-reporting services, pilots’ lounges, snooze rooms and quiet rooms, theaters, game rooms, exercise rooms and gyms, showers, laundry facilities, crew cars or other features.
Also known as: pilots amenities, flight crew FBO services, flight attendant amenities
Many local aviation services offer flight instruction and flight training, including pilot training and flight school options. Most local flight academies and flight schools provide flight instruction, flight simulators, domestic aircraft flight training, international flight training, private aircraft pilot training, and more.
Also known as: flight school, flight training, pilot training, pilot school, flight academy
flight service station
Flight service stations are ground-based information centers that pilots and other aviation professionals use to monitor weather and flight conditions. Many good FBOs have flight service stations on-ground to share vital information with arriving and departing flights.
Also known as: FSS
MRO stands for maintenance, repair, and overhaul; this describes aircraft and airplane maintenance offerings available at many FBOs and other aircraft service providers. MROs offer a variety of aircraft maintenance services, including inspection, part replacement, aircraft overhauls, aircraft modifications, compliance repairs and updates, scheduled maintenance checks, aircraft monitoring, engine overhauls and repairs, and even aircraft detailing services.

Depending on the FBO, passenger amenities may be available. These often exist at larger FBOs or FBOs that cater to more private and business flights. Amenities for private flight passengers may include canopies or other shelter over the deplaning area, chauffeured limos or other vehicles immediately at the deplaning area, passenger lounges, Wi-Fi, temporary office or conference rooms, business centers including printers and computers, aircraft parking and storage, refreshments and restaurants, showers, and more.

private runway services
Business flights, private jets, private planes, celebrity aircraft, and other private flights often need runway services for landing and taking off. Private runway services may include runways at major airports, local airports, and even private airstrips. These services may be kept confidential or away from the public eye. This can include having a car pick up passengers immediately upon disembarking, private passenger and arrival/departure logs, and more.
