Cleaning Your Sunbrella® Items

SAN ANSELMO — If you own awnings, outdoor cushions or covers made by Sunbrella®, it’s a good idea to clean them following summer use. Fortunately, this is easy to do—just follow this basic procedure:

  1. Brush off loose dirt.
  2. Apply a solution of 1/4 cup of dishwashing liquid to 1 gallon of water.
  3. Use a soft bristle brush to gently scrub the fabric.
  4. Allow the solution to sit and soak into the fabric.
  5. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
  6. Air dry.

Awning maintenance mainly consists of routine cleaning, which prevents dirt from becoming embedded in the fabric. In addition to regularity, however, it’s important to use correct procedures when cleaning an awning.

After brushing off any loose dirt, apply a cleaning agent, which can range from a mild detergent or dish soap to a solution of vinegar or ammonia. Apply the solution with a sponge or soft bristle brush. If there are a lot of stains, add a little bleach or ammonia to the solution—it won’t hurt the acrylic fabric.
