While online shopping is a convenient way to purchase these products, the Better Business Bureau says it’s also where counterfeiters are lurking. Consumers complain that these thieves take money for orders but don’t deliver them, offer low-quality merchandise and, in some cases, sell unsafe items that can harm pets.

The BBB recommends making online purchases only from known, trusted retailers. Be wary of any company that doesn’t have a physical address or phone number, and don’t be tempted by steep discounts. Right now, pet-related scams make up about 25% of online scams reported to the BBB’s Scam Tracker.
