Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for auto dealerships that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Toyota Marin, achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is dependent on its ability to stay connected with its community. “We’re a family-run, locally owned dealership with deep roots in Marin, and that’s an important part of everything we do,” says General Manager Mike Christian. “Our customers know we’re going to be straightforward with them and help them find the best cars to meet their specific needs.”

Toyota Marin sells new and pre-owned Toyota cars, trucks, vans and SUVs at its San Rafael facility. In addition to offering an extensive selection of Toyotas that include 2013 models like Camry SE, Prius Four and Avalon Limited, the dealership maintains an in-house service center that stocks all types of original Toyota parts, which allows its experienced technicians to quickly and efficiently complete repairs and adjustments.

Unlike auto dealerships that primarily focus on making new sales and limit the accessibility of their service departments as a result, Toyota Marin makes its service department available seven days a week for the convenience of its customers. “Our service department is open for almost as many hours as our sales department, which is almost unheard of for a car dealership,” says Mr. Christian. “We want to ensure every customer has a great experience, and an important part of that is making sure all their wants and needs are met.”

To further differentiate itself from its competition, Toyota Marin implements a “hassle-free” pricing system that’s designed to alleviate the stress of buying cars for its customers. “When a person walks through our showroom, they see the best price listed right on the sticker for every car, both new and used,” says Mr. Christian. “We even use value pricing for our used cars, which means we base the price on what other cars in the Bay Area are selling for. Our goal is to offer every customer highly competitive pricing alongside a world-class customer service experience.”

Industry Info

A car dealership that makes sure you know what to look for in a vehicle and understand basic maintenance steps is a dealership you want to develop a long-term relationship with, both for future purchases and regular service. According to Paula McCormick, service manager at Toyota Marin in San Rafael, one of the best things a dealership can do to educate its customers is host “new owner seminars,” in which people who have recently purchased cars can come in and have their questions answered by professionals. “These seminars are great places to go over things like navigation systems, how to get the best mileage and drive in an environmentally-friendly manner, and maintenance steps that will keep a car in the best condition,” says Ms. McCormick.
Many educated consumers inquire about purchasing all-electric cars once they learn about their environmental and economic benefits, but according to Toyota Marin’s Sales Manager Matt Shone, these vehicles aren’t always the best choice. “Before you decide to buy an all-electric car, you need to know your actual usage patterns and how much driving range you’re going to need,” he says. “For many people, a hybrid car is a better choice. If you frequently drive without extended stops, an electric car probably isn’t the best way to go.”
If you’re considering purchasing a hybrid vehicle, the first thing you should determine is the expected battery life of the car. “Hybrids are low-maintenance cars, but battery replacement can be a major cost years down the road, so you want to make sure your car has a long battery life,” says Mr. Shone. “For example, the Toyota Prius’ batteries are rated for 10 years and 150,000 miles, which is a pretty significant statistic.”

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Jason Clark

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Jason Clark is assistant service manager at Toyota Marin, a Diamond Certified company. He can be reached at (888) 544-3118 or by email.

Jason Clark: Center Stage

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN RAFAEL – Prior to beginning his career in the automotive industry, Jason Clark spent much of his time working backstage for numerous theatrical productions. In either of these settings, however, his natural aptitude would eventually bring him from behind the scenes to the front of the stage. “In high school I was very involved in theater,” he relates. “While I mainly worked with lighting and other technical aspects offstage, I did a bit of acting as well and was part of an improvisational troupe, which was a lot of fun.” Following high school, Jason considered pursuing his passion for the dramatic arts at a collegiate level, but after getting a job at Sears Automotive, he made the decision to remain in the work world. To his surprise, he found his theatrical experience and talents could be applied in his newfound environment. “As time went on, my outgoing personality and people skills became apparent, and I was promoted from the back end to the front of the house as a service advisor.”

Today, as assistant service manager at Toyota Marin, Jason’s theatrical prowess continues to benefit him in his professional life. “Speaking to people is an art,” he explains. “Thanks to my prior experience with theater and improvisation, I’m comfortable approaching people without any fear of what to say or how to say it—it’s just second nature at this point.”

Jason was born in Oakland and grew up in Pinole, where he continues to live today with his wife, Maria, and their children, Sophia (7) and Annabelle (3). As a father of two, Jason says the bulk of his time outside of work revolves around family. “At this point in my life, it’s all about kids.” Though he says it’s been a while since he’s participated in favorite pastimes like snowboarding and dirt biking, he does make it a point to take regular outdoor excursions. “My wife and I are avid nature lovers,” he affirms. “We just got back from Yosemite a couple weeks ago, and before that we did some camping and hiking in the Monterey area.”

In regard to his life and career, Jason says it’s important to never judge a book by its cover. “You shouldn’t make assumptions about people you don’t know, because it can really limit your interactions. Whenever I’m helping a customer, I give them the benefit of the doubt in terms of their level of automotive expertise. If I find they need to be educated, I’m happy to fill that role.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Jason says he’d spend some time abroad. “My wife is from Slovakia, so I’d probably take her to visit her family and see some more of Europe.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite local brewery?
A: Lagunitas in Petaluma.

A: Les Miserables. I’ve seen it too many times to count, including productions on Broadway and in San Francisco.

Q: If someone was making a movie about your life, what actor would you choose to play yourself?

Q: What’s your favorite snack?
A: Cashews.

  • How to Maintain Vehicle Fluids

SAN RAFAEL — Vehicles require several fluids to maintain ongoing functionality of their engines and related components. While these fluids should be inspected and replenished (as well as occasionally flushed) during routine service visits, it’s also a good idea for drivers to keep track of fluid levels independently during the intervals in between. Here are a few important fluids to be aware of:

Coolant (also known as antifreeze) helps maintain the temperature of the water in the radiator and engine. This fluid is housed in a reservoir adjacent to the engine which, in addition to being semi-transparent, has a fill marker to denote the desired level. When adding coolant, it’s important to do so at the reservoir fill point and not the radiator cap, which is under extreme pressure and should never be removed when the engine is hot.

Washer fluid enables you to clean your windshield in case of a visibility emergency while driving. The washer fluid reservoir is located adjacent to the engine and can be filled directly with either water or a washer solvent. Like the coolant reservoir, its semi-transparency makes it fairly easy to check the fluid level.

Brake fluid is crucial to ensure brake functionality and on-the-road safety. Like coolant and washer fluid, it’s housed in a semi-transparent reservoir adjacent to the engine, with a fill marker to denote its level.

Engine oil level can be checked using a retractable dipstick. While this is best done when the engine is still warm, always make sure it’s turned off first. Pull out the dipstick to check the oil level, which will fall between two notches denoting full and low. If it’s near the “low” notch, add more oil at the designated fill point.

Video: Car Maintenance

Complete Video Transcription:

SAN RAFAEL — Host, Sarah Rutan: In order to get the most out of your vehicle, you’ll need to know some car maintenance tips. Today, we’re in San Rafael with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Jason Clark of Toyota Marin to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Jason Clark: These are some common maintenance items that are checked on the vehicle, either when in for service or in between services. Some of those are the cooling system, the washer fluid, the engine oil check fill point, and also the brake fluid.

This is the coolant reservoir; the fill point is this cap right here. This is the radiator cap, which is under pressure, and it’s also marked when the vehicle is warm not to open from here. It is under extreme pressure and is very hot. The marker on the side will identify the fill point and also low level. It is pink fluid and can be easily identified full and low.

For the washer fluid, it has a fill cap here and can be filled directly with either water or washer solvent. The level can be identified because it is clear, and you can look pure straight down and see it’s – how full it is.

This is the brake fluid reservoir. It also needs to be checked every time you come in for service and in between. This is the fill cap for adding brake fluid as needed. And on this clear reservoir, you can also see a fill marker for completely full, and at the very bottom for needing to be added fluid. And this should be at the top fill point at all times.

When checking the engine oil, you pull the dipstick. And only checking when the engine is off. Pull the dipstick, and you’ll be able to check on two notches where the oil level is. You’re looking for it to be in between or at the top of the upper marker. And then you know your oil is full.

Tire inflation is incredibly important to overall gas mileage and tire wear. So, tire pressure should be checked monthly and in between on services. Tire pressure is checked at this fill point here, which is your inflation nozzle. Inflation pressure is indicated on the door sticker right here, front and rear tire pressure, including spare, and also your tire size.
