Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for pest control companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Thrasher Termite & Pest Control, Inc., the keys to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction are simple: take the time to assess each client’s situation and provide detail-oriented services that meet their specific needs. “Rather than rushing from job to job, we designate enough time to perform a thorough inspection of every client’s property,” explains President Janet Thrasher. “By taking the time to get accurate diagnoses, we can make sure we’re prescribing effective solutions.”

Thrasher Termite & Pest Control serves residential, commercial, industrial, and hospitality clients from Palo Alto to Morgan Hill and the Santa Cruz Mountains to the East Foothills. The family-owned company controls all types of crawling, flying and biting pests, including ants, cockroaches, mice and rats, fleas, bed bugs, and others. The company also provides termite inspections, termite and fungus treatments, and damage repairs. For more than 35 years, Thrasher Termite & Pest Control has grown through referrals by establishing a reputation as a dependable, accountable and trustworthy company.

Unlike less experienced pest control companies that lack proper oversight and take an “assembly line” approach to each job as a result, Thrasher Termite & Pest Control takes proactive measures to ensure quality control throughout every step of its work. “On large jobs, we always have an inspector visit the site periodically to make sure everything is being done to standard,” says Ms. Thrasher. “Also, our pest control manager regularly meets with our technicians to follow up on what’s happening in the field and discuss any issues they might have.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Thrasher Termite & Pest Control is its status as a QualityPro Certified company, which is one of the most prestigious distinctions in the pest control industry. “We went through the QualityPro certification process about three years ago, and it was very rigorous,” says Ms. Thrasher. “Since we’ve earned this certification, the National Pest Management Association holds us to a higher standard than most pest control companies, which means we have to meet certain expectations to maintain our status.”

Industry Info

Once thought to be virtually extinct, bed bugs have made a surprise resurgence in recent years and reclaimed their status as one of the most noxious insects on the pest control scene. According to Janet Thrasher, owner of Thrasher Termite & Pest Control, Inc. in Los Gatos, the Bay Area hasn’t been spared from these pests’ widespread pervasiveness. “Bed bugs are a really big problem throughout California,” she says. “One of the worst things about bed bugs is that once they’ve established themselves in your home, they’re really hard to remove, so it’s not a problem that homeowners can handle by themselves.”

Ms. Thrasher says that in some cases, homeowners may not even realize they have a bed bug problem in the first place. “Bed bugs hide themselves extremely well, so it’s often difficult to detect them. Also, 30 percent of people who have bed bug infestations aren’t allergic to their bites, which makes things even more complicated.”

Fortunately, there are signs other than bite symptoms that can clue you in to the presence of bed bugs. Some of these include fecal spots (tiny, dark, granule-like droppings), blood smears on sheets (fecal spots that have been re-wetted, which gives them the appearance of smeared blood) and empty exoskeletons.

Ms. Thrasher reiterates that instead of trying to remove bed bugs yourself, you should hire a company that’s well-versed in dealing with these types of infestations. “Some pest control companies, like Thrasher, employ specially trained technicians who know how to effectively deal with bed bugs,” she says. “In addition to eliminating the current infestation, they’ll install devices that monitor new bed bug activity. For example, mattress encasements and furniture leg protectors can stop bed bugs from climbing up bedposts and re-inhabiting your mattress. These devices make new bed bugs easy to find.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I have an insect problem but I don’t know what type of insect it is. Can you help?

A: Absolutely. You can email us a picture of the insect you’re dealing with or drop it by the office. We can also arrange to visit your property, identify the pests and provide an estimate for treating the infestation.

Q: Do you use Green pest control products and techniques?

A: Yes. In addition to offering an entire line of EcoSmart products that are made with natural ingredients, we use integrated pest management (IPM) methods, which focus on practical solutions and preventative measures such as securing homes against intrusion and removing factors that attract pests in the first place. By using IPM methods, we’re able to minimize the need for more aggressive tactics.

Q: Can you handle bee infestations?

A: First, we need to determine if the hive or swarm contains Africanized honey bees. For common honey bees, we’ll typically refer you to a professional beekeeper, who will safely remove and relocate the hive or swarm. Because of their inherent danger, Africanized honey bees can’t be relocated. We’re trained to safely destroy the hive or swarm.

Q: Do you offer bed bug treatments?

A: As a bedbugFREE Certified company, we have the specialized training and equipment to effectively deal with bed bugs. No one should try to battle bed bugs alone. Because of the stress these pests cause, there have been many cases of unlicensed individuals accidentally poisoning themselves and/or causing fires in their desperation to get rid of an infestation. If you have bed bugs, you should call us because we’re licensed professionals with specialized training.

Q: Do you work with homeowners associations?

A: Yes, we’ve established ongoing relationships with many HOAs, both for pest control and termite control. We understand the unique concerns and challenges of HOA boards, and we’re happy to attend HOA meetings to explain ongoing programs and provide pest prevention tips to the community.

Q: Do I need to be concerned about my children and pets if you spray around my house?

A: Many common household products are far more toxic than the materials we apply, but the fact remains that our products are toxic. If they weren’t, they wouldn’t kill bugs. It’s important for us to know about children and pets on your property so we can adjust our treatments accordingly. For example, spraying may not be the best solution. Baiting for target pests is very effective, and baits can be placed in locations that are inaccessible to children and pets. We also offer EcoSmart products that are made with natural ingredients. By taking an integrated pest management approach to identify and eliminate conditions that attract pests, we limit the amount of material that’s required to control an infestation.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Janet Thrasher

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

Janet Thrasher: From Adversity to Achievement

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

LOS GATOS — When Janet Thrasher started a termite control business with her husband, Duff, in 1979, she didn’t know what the future would hold. More than 30 years later, following both unexpected success and unforeseeable tragedy, she looks back on what can ultimately be called a triumph in the face of adversity. “After Duff and I got married, we moved from Southern California to Santa Clara, where he started working for a local termite company,” she recounts. “At the young age of 23, we decided to take the plunge and start our own business. We started out small, but the business grew, and in 1987, we moved from Santa Clara to Los Gatos.”

In 2000, just when life seemed to have fallen into a rhythm of relative predictability, the unimaginable struck: Duff died suddenly of a heart attack, leaving Janet with a household and a business to maintain. “At that point, I had three teenagers and 15 employees, and I wasn’t sure what to do next,” she says. “Overnight, I went from sharing the business workload to being the sole owner. Suddenly, I had to make all the decisions and learn more about termites, ants, bees, and fleas than I ever thought I would. When I was at my lowest, my family, my staff and even other pest control operators stepped in to help.”

After that initial boost of support, Janet threw herself into becoming a full-fledged pest control operator, incorporating the business and obtaining her operator’s license with the Structural Pest Control Board. Fifteen years later, she has established herself as a leading figure in the industry. In addition to being the chairperson and district director of Santa Clara Valley Pest Control Operators of California (PCOC), she serves on the Board of Directors for Peacock Insurance and is a member of the National Pest Management Association (NPMA). She also led Thrasher Termite & Pest Control to earn the QualityPro designation for excellence in pest management, as well as the distinction of being named the Silicon Valley Association of REALTORS Affiliate of the Year in 2011.

Looking back, Janet expresses her gratitude for both her immediate and business families and the roles they played in her company’s success. “Since 2000, we’ve tripled in size and opened a second branch in San Diego, which is managed by my son, Garrett,” she says. “I continue to be inspired by the collective support of my family, employees and colleagues. There are a lot of people here whom I care about very much, and I’m proud of our business and our ability to stay successful.”

Outside of work, Janet spends the bulk of her time with family. “I enjoy playing golf and exercising, but my biggest hobby these days is spending time with my grandchildren,” she says. “Of course, I also have my kids, my parents, my two older brothers and their families, and my husband’s family, whom I’ve managed to stay close with over the years.” Additionally, Janet enjoys traveling and spending time with friends. “I like taking road trips to Lake Tahoe and Monterey Bay, and I try to get to Hawaii a couple of times a year. I also attend an annual get-together in Palm Springs with 10 of my high school girlfriends, which is always fun.”

In addition to her more leisurely pastimes, Janet maintains an active involvement in her local community. “After Duff passed away, our family founded the Duff Thrasher Memorial Youth Fund,” she explains. “We hold an annual golf tournament fundraiser that brings in about $10,000, all of which is earmarked for things that benefit the youth in our community.”

When asked what she’d do if she could retire tomorrow, Janet says she’d continue to stay active. “I would exercise every day and golf more often…maybe take some golf vacations. I’d also help my kids a bit more with their little ones. As much as I want to be available for them, sometimes I’m just too busy, so I’d like to have more flexibility for that.”

  • How to Avoid Bed Bugs While Traveling

LOS GATOS — One of the most common ways bed bugs enter a home is hitching a ride with unsuspecting travelers, particularly while they’re staying at a hotel. You can reduce the likelihood of bringing bed bugs home from your vacation by following these four steps:

    1. Inspect the bed and headboard. In a hotel, bed bugs are likely to be found behind the headboard. Before you settle into your room, lift the headboard off the wall (with another person’s assistance) and look for evidence of bed bugs. Besides the bugs themselves, common signs include dark brown/black spots and shed exoskeletons. You should also pull back the bed linens and check the visible edges of the mattress and box spring. If you suspect bed bugs, request another room!

    2. Keep your luggage closed and away from bed bug-prone areas. Keep all luggage zippers closed, and don’t store luggage on or next to beds, upholstered furniture, or in closets. The further you store your luggage from these areas, the better.

    3. Keep items that can’t be laundered in Ziploc® bags. Items such as books, electronics, toiletries and jewelry should be kept sealed in Ziploc bags whenever they’re not in use. Even a laptop can harbor stowaway bed bugs, so don’t make any exceptions.

    4. Complain if you suspect bed bugs. Notify property management if you see apparent evidence of bed bugs or begin to develop itchy welts on your body. Seeing an insect or developing bite-like symptoms doesn’t always mean bed bugs are present, but management should be aware of your concern so the possibility can be investigated.

Finally, if you notice unusual bites or welts up to 14 days after your trip, call a licensed pest control company for assistance. A company that specializes in bed bugs will either put your fears to rest or start a treatment plan to get rid of the problem before it gets out of control.

Video: Travel Tip to Avoid Bed Bugs

Complete Video Transcription:

LOS GATOS — Host, Sarah Rutan: A common way that bed bugs get around is by hitching a ride with unsuspecting travelers, particularly while they’re staying at a hotel. Today we’re in Los Gatos with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Janet Thrasher of Thrasher Termite & Pest Control to learn a few ways you can prevent this from happening.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Janet Thrasher: Hi, welcome to our training center. Today I’m going to share four travel tips on what to do if you encounter bed bugs and how to avoid bringing them home.

The first tip is: when you get to your hotel room, pull up the sheets and check the mattress. You want to look along this beading here, on both the bottom and the top to make sure there’s no activity. If there’s bed bugs there, you’ll know it.

Second, store your electronic devices in a plastic bag when you’re not using them. That’ll prevent bed bugs from getting inside.

And then the next tip is to take your suitcase and store it on a hard surface. We recommend the bathroom counter, or even inside the tub. But most important, don’t unpack your clothes into the hotel dresser.

And finally, if you do find bed bugs, be sure to let the hotel management know. Any reputable company would want to know if their rooms had bed bugs or not. Thank you! Travel safely.
