He was just very knowledgeable, very precise, it didn't take forever to get an appointment, he explained how much we owed now, and the balance when we come back to do more work. I think he had help to install them, there was somebody else, and they just did a really good job. He's just a great person.

They're efficient, the turnaround wasn't long, and getting the appointment didn't take long. My mom and dad had them do blinds for them before I got mine and they really loved the shutters. He knew his product. What I had was kind of a cheaper blind because we bought the house when it was just being built new and just needed to get blinds up. He took them down, put them in something, and he explained the difference between the shutters they were putting in, how to open them and the different sized parts. He was able to answer all my questions and he brought me a catalog to show me different options for a slider. I really don't have anything bad to say.

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for window covering companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Shutter City, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: take a detail-oriented approach to every job to ensure the client’s specific needs and expectations are met. “We take each window covering installation one step at a time, which is important for achieving high-quality results,” says owner Bob Calderara. “Instead of cutting corners or hurrying to get to the next job, we take the time to do each task correctly, which improves the overall quality of our work.”

Shutter City has been providing and installing window covering products for residential and commercial clients throughout the Greater Bay Area since 2011. The company’s Ripon facility carries everything from interior shutters and blinds to exterior awnings, and it exclusively offers products made by industry-leading manufacturers like Hunter Douglas, Graber, and Century Blinds.

Unlike window covering companies that limit their product offerings to one specific area of the industry, Shutter City supplements its window covering selection with specialty products like security screens, which allows its customers to fulfill numerous home protection needs at once. “Our security screens really set us apart,” affirms Mr. Calderara. “They were originally designed as hurricane and tornado screens, but they have many more applications as security screens. They’re made of stainless steel mesh, so they look like bug screens, but they provide all the protection you need to keep out intruders.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Shutter City is its full-service approach to its clients’ window covering projects, which includes educating them about products and coordinating delivery and installation times. “We’re very hands-on throughout the entire process, which our customers really appreciate,” says Mr. Calderara. “We provide a high level of service from the time we place the order until we’re putting the finishing touches on the window covering.”

Industry Info
If you want to protect your home without sacrificing curb appeal, consider installing security screens.
Homeowners have several traditional options for dealing with security threats (alarm systems, window bars, keeping windows and doors shut), but those measures aren’t practical in every situation. Alarm systems can be cost-prohibitive, window bars can be ugly and off-putting, and the moderate climate in the Bay Area makes keeping windows and doors shut an unappealing option.

Luckily, today’s homeowners have more choices than ever when it comes to keeping their homes safe. One of the best-kept security solutions might be right in front of your eyes: super-strong screens. “Security screens are very popular right now,” says Bob Calderara, owner of Shutter City in Ripon. “They provide privacy, a certain amount of sun control and, of course, security. Everyone wants to feel safe in their own home, and these screens are perfect for that.”

Security screens are made of stainless steel mesh and fit on the outside of doors and windows. They’re often used as front door screens, window screens and patio or sliding door screens. They affix to the home with a hinged frame that can be easily pushed out from the inside in case of a fire or other emergency, but they also provide strong protection against intruders. “Security screens were originally designed as hurricane and tornado screens, but people soon realized the value of using them to keep out predators and intruders as well,” explains Mr. Calderara. “They’ve been redefined as a security product and can be a great addition to any home or business.”

Mr. Calderara adds that security screens are a good option for homeowners who live in areas that are prone to crime because they’re strong and more cosmetically appealing than window bars. “They look just like bug screens, but they provide all the protection you need to keep out intruders,” he says.

It’s important to remember that proper installation is important for preserving the integrity of your windows and doors and ensuring the security screens function correctly. Finding a good installer will add peace of mind to the process, and new security screens will help you feel safer at home without sacrificing your view or the look of your home.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How long will it take to receive my new blinds?
A: “It depends on the product you order and where it comes from. Some brands arrive in a very timely manner; others ship from farther away and can take longer to arrive. For example, Hunter Douglas shutters take four to nine days to create, so we usually receive them within a couple weeks of ordering them, while Norman shutters can take up to seven weeks to arrive. Regardless of which product you choose, we’ll give you a reasonably accurate estimate so you can plan accordingly. We’ll also track your shipment and give you updates so you’ll know as soon as your blinds arrive, and we can usually install them the same week that we receive them.”

Q: How much will my new window coverings cost?
A: “It depends on numerous factors, including the products you choose and the number of windows you need covered. We’ll give you a written estimate that’s specific to your home and preferred products.”

Q: Can you provide temporary window coverings while my new window coverings are en route?
A: “Absolutely.”

Q: Can you remove and reinstall my blinds if I’m repainting my home?
A: “Yes. We have to charge a reinstallation fee, but we’re happy to provide that service to ensure your blinds are put back in a way that keeps them looking and functioning their best.”

Q: Who do I contact for warranty work?
A: “Always call us first. We can usually handle warranty work quicker and more efficiently than the product manufacturer. We can even call the manufacturer on your behalf if it’s more convenient for you.”

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Bob Calderara

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Bob Calderara is a 31-year veteran of the window covering industry and owner of Shutter City, a Diamond Certified company. He can be reached at (925) 268-8317 or by email.

Bob Calderara: Blind Ambition

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

RIPON — After more than 30 years in the window covering industry, Bob Calderara recounts his early introduction to the field. “I first got into doing window treatments when I was about 12 years old,” he remembers. “My brother-in-law was an installer for a large commercial company and needed some help. After high school, I tried a few other careers, but I couldn’t find anything I enjoyed as much as window coverings, so I got back into the industry as an installer.”

Over the next few years, Bob felt an emerging desire to start his own enterprise. “I wanted to get to a place where I could handle both sales and installation, which would allow me to have more control over the process,” he says. “I saw a lot of flaws in the way some companies operated, and I learned from them. Eventually, I went out on my own and founded Shutter City in 2011.”

Today, Bob says his favorite part of his job is its characteristic versatility. “The window covering industry is a diverse and exciting field, with new innovations happening all the time. Also, my company recently expanded its capabilities to encompass exterior window coverings, so that has opened up a whole new dimension that I really enjoy working in.”

Raised in Oakland, Bob resides today in Ripon with his wife, Magda, and their children, Gabriella and Gino. “After growing up in the East Bay, I appreciate the laid-back lifestyle here in Ripon,” he says. “The Central Valley is a nice location—it’s remote enough from the city, but it’s easy to get there if you want.”

Outside of work, Bob engages in a variety of active pastimes, both independently and with family. “Personally, I enjoy playing golf and exercising,” he says. “I have a home gym, so that helps me stay fit. With my family, it’s a lot of outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, bicycling and going to the beach.”

In regard to his professional career, Bob espouses the importance of having enthusiasm for his livelihood. “I think people can sense my level of enthusiasm when I interact with them, especially in a customer service situation,” he explains. “It really sets the tone for the exchange, which is why it’s important for me to be genuinely invested in what I’m doing. I’m thankful that, 30 years later, I’m still enthusiastic about what I do.”

Ask Me Anything!

  • 3 Types of Shutter Materials

RIPON — When buying shutters to cover your home’s windows, in addition to picking a design, you’ll need to choose from different materials. Your choice of shutter material will likely depend on several factors, from your color and style preferences to your budget size. Here are the three major types of shutter materials available:

    Plastic (vinyl)
Plastic shutters are a good choice if you’re on a limited budget. Besides being the least expensive option, plastic shutters are fully weather- and moisture-resistant, which makes them virtually maintenance-free.

    Wood
If you have a larger budget and live in a high-end home, consider choosing wood shutters. Since they can be modified to fit uniquely shaped windows or particular color preferences, wood shutters are a premier designer option. They’re also very durable due to their solid construction, so much so that they’re considered a “fixed asset” that actually adds to your home’s resale value. However, since wood is susceptible to moisture issues, keep in mind that you’ll need to proactively maintain your shutters in order for them to reach their full lifespan.

    Composite (faux wood)

If you like the look of wood but want the affordability and low maintenance of plastic, composite shutters may be the right choice. Constructed from engineered wood, composite shutters are similar to natural wood in weight and visual appearance, but they don’t have the same vulnerability to moisture-related damage. Additionally, composite shutters typically come with a lifetime warranty.

Video: Material Options for Window Shutters

Complete Video Transcription:

RIPON — Host, Sarah Rutan: When buying window shutters, it’s good to know about the different material options that are available. Today we’re in Ripon with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Bob Calderera of Shutter City to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Bob Calderera: We have 3 major different types of shutters. We have the plastic, which is an excellent option. It gives you the highest in durability, the highest in moisture-resistance. Then you have the composite, which is also an excellent choice for durability, with a lifetime warranties, with several different choices as far as being used as special shades. And then you have the wood shutter, which has more of a designer effect, which will give you more choices for special shape windows, and give you many more choices for different colors. And also with textures, like a stained finish. So, these are all excellent choices, and depending on your budget and your lifestyle.
