Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for moving companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Robb & Messer Moving and Storage, the most effective way to keep customers satisfied is to pay attention to the finer details of their moving projects. “We closely monitor every move so nothing gets lost in the shuffle,” says co-owner David Robb. “From the initial walkthrough to the final follow-up, we focus on addressing our customers’ needs and providing them with the best possible experiences.”

Robb & Messer Moving and Storage has been providing moving services for residential and commercial clients throughout the Bay Area since 2015. As an Arpin Van Lines agent, the company has the training and equipment to handle all types of local, intrastate, interstate, and international moving projects (including corporate offices), and it also offers short- and long-term storage at its Santa Rosa facility.

Unlike moving companies that lack flexibility when it comes to their employees and equipment, Robb & Messer Moving and Storage has the resources to adapt when unexpected issues arise during the moving process. “We’re very responsive to changes on the job and scheduling adjustments,” affirms Mr. Robb. “Any successful move requires a lot of planning, but when things don’t go as planned, it’s helpful to have a company that can roll with the changes.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Robb & Messer Moving and Storage is its highly skilled and experienced employees, all of whom are trained to utilize industry-best moving practices. “We have a great crew from top to bottom,” says Mr. Robb. “We think of it like managing a sports team—we match each player according to their unique strengths to get the best possible performance.”

Industry Info

When choosing a moving company, be sure to ask for proof of licensing and insurance.

As with any service industry, the moving business has its share of companies that operate under the radar and shirk legal credentials like licensing and insurance. Due to the risks that come with hiring one of these companies, it’s important to take steps to make sure the mover you choose is trustworthy.

“When you hire an unlicensed moving company, it’s usually for a lower cost than a licensed one, but it comes with a tremendous amount of risk,” explains David Robb, co-owner of Robb & Messer Moving and Storage in Santa Rosa. “For example, if a company’s employees aren’t covered by workers’ compensation insurance, you could be held liable in the event of an injury or accident that takes place on the job. Since moving is physically intensive work, there’s always a chance of this happening, so you don’t want to mess around with an uninsured company.”

Another risk of hiring an unlicensed mover is the lack of accountability. “Even if an unlicensed mover gives you a low price, there’s no guarantee that your belongings and valuables will arrive safely,” cautions Mr. Robb. “What’s worse, if anything gets damaged or lost, you have no legal recourse for getting reimbursed. You’re basically at the mercy of the company, which isn’t a good position to be in.”

In light of these risks, it’s easy to see how hiring an unlicensed moving company can end up costing you a lot more than expected. For this reason, you should always ask to see a mover’s proof of insurance and verify their license is in good standing with the Contactors State Licensing Board.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM David Robb

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

David Robb: A Positive Move

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SANTA ROSA — After graduating from college, David Robb wasn’t exactly thrilled to return to his previous job as a mover. However, by adopting a more positive outlook, he was able to turn his initial discouragement into a great success story. “I got into moving when I was 19 years old as a summer job while I was home from college,” he recounts. “As an athlete, it was a great fit for me because, like sports, it was physically challenging and I got to work in a team environment. After graduating with a degree in business administration, I was hoping to transition into a new career, but with the state of the job market in 2007, I soon found myself back in the moving industry. At first, I was discouraged about it, but at a certain point, I decided to change my mindset and start enjoying every day instead of dreading it.”

With time, David’s positive mentality progressed from a coping mechanism to a genuine state of mind that awoke new professional possibilities. “I became more and more motivated to make a positive impact on the moving industry,” he explains. “I’d encountered several situations where I didn’t agree with how moving companies handled things or treated customers, which inspired my dream of running a more customer-focused business. This dream was shared by my friend Kyle Messer, who also worked in the industry, and we eventually made that dream a reality by starting our own moving company.”

Today, as co-owner of Robb & Messer Moving and Storage, David says his favorite part of his job is working with customers. “I get a lot of fulfillment from giving our customers positive experiences. We focus on each individual customer and do our best to accommodate all of their needs in an efficient manner. That’s our challenge every day, and it’s a lot of fun.”

A resident of San Anselmo (where he lives with his wife, Emily, and their son, Rex) David expresses his appreciation for life and work in the Bay Area. “I was born in San Francisco, grew up in Santa Rosa and now live in San Anselmo, so I know the area really well, which comes in handy as a mover. I also have a large base of friends, family and business connections in the area, which I’m very thankful for.”

Outside of work, David, spends his time on a variety of active pastimes and interests. “I enjoy mountain biking, golfing and tennis,” he details. “I also like to watch professional tennis—I’ll often record matches that take place in Spain or France and watch them the next day.” Additionally, David likes to spend quality time with his family, whether riding bikes or going on walks to the park or grocery store.

In regard to a professional philosophy, David espouses the value of self-reflection. “Every day, I ask myself, ‘If I needed a mover, would I hire me?’ Fortunately, I’m always able to answer that question with a ‘yes’ because of the effort we put forth in generating positive experiences for customers. I find this is a helpful way to reflect, reassess and stay motivated.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, David says he’d attend a tennis match in person. “I would fly to France and watch Rafael Nadal play in the French Open. He’ll probably be long retired by the time I actually retire, so I’m going to take advantage of this hypothetical scenario!”

Ask Me Anything!

A: Eggs and a smoothie.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

  • 4 Packing Tips for a Move

SANTA ROSA — If you’re doing your own packing in preparation for a move, consider the following tips:

    1. Label all boxes. On every box you pack, write the room it will ultimately go into, as well as the general items it contains. Mark your label on two sides of the box so you’ll be able to see it regardless of which way the box is facing.

    2. Pack tightly. Besides being an efficient use of space, a tightly packed box reduces the possibility of items shifting around while in transit, which lowers the chance for breakage. On the other hand, when packing a large box, avoid overfilling it with heavy items, as this can cause the bottom to fall out.

    3. Avoid unnecessary packing. For local moves, certain items don’t need to be packed. For instance, clothes on hangers or in drawers can typically be moved as is. Also, it may not be worthwhile attempting to pack some awkward or bulky items.

    4. Clearly designate any items not to be moved. To avoid confusion on the day of your move, set aside any items that aren’t going in the moving truck, preferably within a single room or area. Be sure to verbally communicate with your movers so they understand these aren’t to be moved.

Video: Communication in Moving

Complete Video Transcription:

SANTA ROSA — Host, Sarah Rutan: To avoid mistakes and other problems during a move, you’ll need to be proactive about communication. To learn more, we’re in Santa Rosa with Kyle Messer of Robb & Messer Moving and Storage, speaking on behalf of Diamond Certified Expert Contributor David Robb.

Kyle Messer: When people are looking for a moving company, communication is key. From start to finish, when people are looking for a mover — from the sales people, from the office staff, all the way down to the crew and the driver that’s handling the move — communication back and forth between the moving company and the customer is ideal because if there’s a break in communication, a lot of things can go wrong.

So, make sure you, as the customer, are very communicative with your crew and with your mover — that describe your basic needs and whatever might be different and the changes that arise during the course of your move.
